roxy loves to play with brooms, shovels, rakes, ect. anything with a long pole attatched basically. i've had to hide the rakes and shovels so she doesn't hurt herself. she'll carry the pole around for hours and fights me when i try to take it away! -
michele, i don't agree with hmm's comment that no pit bull should be brought to a dog park. it is however not a place for most pits. if your dog has dog aggressive tendencies, which most abpt's do, no amount of training to going to reverse that. you may be able to control the aggression to an extent, but you can't train it out. there may be some pit bulls who seem to show no aggression at all, but they unfortunately are the exception.

i dont know if you have costcos where you live but i just bought roxy a huge bed there for $16.00! it's very nice, fleece on one side, nice colored fabric on the other. and it has some cedar chips inside for those pesky fleas.

bk- i was actually talking about a comment pei made. :D

pei, i know what point you're trying to make, but you've got a little bit of information wrong. pit bulls are generally aggressive dogs, more so than other breeds. there are many things that come into play regarding this, but a large factor in it is the fact that pit bulls have been bred for fighting for a long time. even dogs that are not currently bred for fighting will have inherited these traits to some degree or another. :) and on a side note, i take some offense to the comment that dog aggressive pit bulls are the result of bad owners who don't socialize their dogs. for months i brought roxy to the dog park a few times a week, where she would play with a variety of dogs. she meets dogs on the street all the time and very rarely to i make the decision to keep her from greeting them, instead allowing her to socialize. after these months of socialization though, at 6 months old, she has begun to exhibit dog aggression towards some dogs. i do consider myself i responsible apbt owner and part of that is knowing when socialization could potentially cause a problem and choosing to walk on by the dog park.

my puppy absolutely HATES having her ears cleaned. so much so that, when i bring out the little blue bottle of solution, she runs to her crate! after i do it, she runs around endlessly shaking her head and looking at me like "how could you do this to me!?" she gets over it though. your dog will get used to it.

i understand your concern for your puppy, anyone could. but you should place the blame on the owners of the dogs, not the dogs themselves. it is my belief that any dog owner that brings their dogs to the park and proceeds to completely ignore them, be it a chihuahua or a pit bull, is irrespsonsible. please realize that many pit bulls are naturally dog aggressive. my apbt is not yet 6 months old, and already somewhat aggressive toward many dogs. for this reason, i don't take her to the dog park. i would never want to be in a situation where my dog injured another. i know many responsible pit owners will not take their dogs to off leash parks for this reason. it sounds like you do have some sort of a problem with irresponsible owners in your area, who happen to own potentially dangerous dogs. my advice is, when you see a potentially dangerous situation (ie. overtly aggressive dogs with a shady looking owner) put your dog on his leash and leave! but don't think that all pit bulls should be avoided or that they are all bad, it's simply not true. :D ps. it does seem unlikely that a puppy attacked by two pitbulls would come away so unscathed. it's also quite unusual that your screaming made them stop. most pit bulls will not stop unless physically restrained, and even then it takes a lot to make them stop. i wouldn't doubt it if they were just trying to play with your pup and got carried away. these dogs do play quite rough.

thanks for all the input guys! i'm going to try a few things to see how it goes. i wasn't planning on mixing raw meat and kibble though. i was just curious because if roxy doesn't adjust to the food, most likely i'll be switching her over to barf. :)

i'll definitly try giving her the water i drink (it's always either filtered or bottled). i never thought of that as a possibility.

i recently switched my pit puppy over from eukanuba to wellness. for a while her poop has been extremely variable, from regular to super soft and gross. i mentioned this to my vet when we went for her check up a few days ago and she recommended i stop giving her any treats to see if the situation cleared up (we were thinking the treats might be the culprit). today she's only eaten the wellness . . . first thing this morning her poop was in good shape, but when i took her out just now it was quite soft, which makes me think that it could actually be the food that's not agreeing with her. i was wondering if anyone else had any problems with wellness, or had heard of anything like that? if it does turn out to be the food what would be a good food for her to eat (she's almost 6 months)? and i'm also curious about feeding puppies a barf diet? since they have different nutritional needs from an adult dog, how would the diet be tailored? thanks!

haha, well she is my dog (i bought her from the breeder, pay her vet bils, buy her all the goodies), but everyone loves her!

as you can probably gather from my other posts, i have a 5 month old pit bull and tons of questions! to get to the point, roxy picks and chooses who she will walk on leash for. i have absolutely no problem walking her on leash. she walks beautifully, generally doesn't pull much, and is very excited to be out and about. when it comes to the other people in my household however, it's nothing but trouble. if anyone besides myself tries to take her out, she either refuses to walk, walking only a few feet before she plants her butt, or tries to drag them back to the house. i know she will walk with me because she feels most comfortable, becuase if someone esle is walking her, but i'm with them, as long as she can see me, she'll walk. she's not afraid or shy to anyone in my household, she'll jump right up on the couch and cuddle with them and wags her tail like crazy when the come home. it's just the walking . . .any suggestions on what we could do? by the way, to get her to walk with me i didn't have to do anything specific, just put the leash on her and call her a bit.

so then maybe i've started too much, too soon. we got her at 3 months and i started her a short time after. i'm happy to report though, that this morning she listened to every word i said!

roxy is now five months old and driving me insane! lol. i've been working with her to start on her basic obedience and i'm having some problems. she seems to choose when she's going to perform and when she's not! sometimes, we'll work and she will sit every single time i tell her. she even responds to hand gestures. other times she will just look at me, as if to say "umm, no." the same goes with stay. she's not as good at staying but getting better. it's just that it seems as though she refuses to do things. any ideas on what i'm doing wrong?

my boyfriend has owned two of the most aggressive chewers i've ever heard of. both were pit bulls. once he left the dog alone for a while, came home and found the dining room table to be toppled over because the dog chewed off an entire table leg! his other dog destroyed all of his living room furniture, including a couch.

i've just started switching my pup over to wellness from eukaneuba. i picked up the fish and sweet potato formula which is designed for skin and coat health, specifically in the case of allergies. my dog hasn't shown any signs of allergies, but i thought it would be alright. do you think i can keep her on this or should i switch to chicken or lamb? also, i know that you need to switch foods gradually, but does this apply only to switching brands, or even between different formulas of the same brand? thanks!

my pup is almost 5 months, and she's doing really well with her housebreaking. rarely do we have full on accidents. she does however have a problem with piddling here and there. sometimes she'll be playing with the cats and stop for one second, pee the tiniest amount on the carpet, and keep going. or she'll run inside to get a toy, run back in with it, and again stop and pee just a tiny bit. i don't know why she's doing this. sometimes it happens within a 1/2 hour of a walk! i was wondering if anyone had any experience with this or advice? she also had a problem with submissive urination whenever my boyfriend would come home, but that has stopped. i don't know if the two are related.
