1. The one that I always read about is the White English Terrier like Gooeydog said. It was one of the breeds mixed with the (then very different) Bulldog to produce the current, Bull Terrier, Am Staff, Staffy Bull, APBT, et al. Apparently it's a breed that is now extinct.
2. One Olde English Bulldogge, One Staffordshire Bull Terrier and (now that I'm married) I co-habitiate with one Great Dane.
3. What a weird coincidence! As long as you haven't given your deposit to the breeder, you should go look at the litter. If you like 'em, adopt one! Or two...
4. It's not necessarily true that if a breed doesn't show-up on the AKC site that it's not a legitimate breed or it's a cross breed! Look at the breed list on Dogo! The AKC is notorious for dragging their feet when it comes to accepting new breeds. They only recently accepted the Jack Russel Terrier! This is a breed that has been around MUCH longer than some of the terriers that were already accepted! There are a lot of purebred dogs that have been around for a LONG LONG time that aren't accepted by the AKC. There are a lot of other organizations that have accepted breeds that the high and mighty AKC has not. I do have to say however that I've never heard of the Dasiy Dog.
5. In respose to the question you aked:
Who the he!! would drop off a ten year old dog???
I volunteer at the local Humane Society twice a month. My goal is to try to find homes for the dogs that are surrendered. I spend time with prospective owners trying to help them find a dog that is right for their home. There are MANY legitimate reasons that people have to surrender their animals. And of course there are just as many reasons that aren't so legitimate (more like excuses). What I'm saying is that you shouldn't be so angry. Many of the older dogs like the rottweiller that you were referring to are surrendered for very legitimate reasons. Quite often the owner has taken ill and they are no longer able to provide adequate care for the dog. Sometimes the owner has died! If there's no family member that is willing or able to care for the dog (sadly, sometimes there's no one at all), they have to be surrendered. It's very sad because the dog was everything to their owner!
6. I have to agree with Sanvean. I can't believe that any respectable breeder would adopt out a puppy that's infected with parvo!
7. I broke down and sent the guy an e-mail. I just can't stand these types of articles. I'm really getting burnt out arguing with these people though! Here's what I wrote:
Another misinformed reporter recommending a course of action that they clearly haven
8. I'm SOOO tired of this argument!!! I can't believe that people think that breed specific legislation is really going to do anything positive!!! Most of these people don't even know which breeds they're talking about. They just use the generic term "pitbull". Did you know that PETA supports breed banning? I had a very extensive "e-mail war" with the PR person at PETA. She finally stopped replying to me. I don't know if I have the time or the wearwithall to get into another e-mail battle!!!
9. My guess is that it's a cyst. They're really pretty common. If it is a cyst, there's really nothing to worry about because they're benign. You can have them removed but sometimes it's more extensive than you'd think because apparently there are tendrils that run out from the cyst itself. All of these tendrils should be removed too. My wife's Great Dane has a cyst that she's had for several years and it doesn't bother her at all. You should definitely bring your dog into the vet and have it checked out to make sure that it's not something else. Hope everything turns out okay.
10. If you have a pet store in your area that you're a regular at, you could ask them if they'll order the food of your choice and stock it for you. Some companies won't ship to a private residence but they'll ship to a store. A lot of times smaller stores will be happy to do that for you. Especially if you're a regular customer. I've had really good luck with Bil-Jac foods and my dogs LOVE the stuff!
11. I just read the other day that UKC APBTs can be dual registered with the AKC as ASTs. In fact, the article said that over 50% of the American Pit Bull Terriers registered with the UKC are also registerd with the AKC as American Staffordshire Terriers! I didn't read all of the posts here so someone probably already noted that but I thought it was really interesting. I own a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and I know from reading that SBTs and ASTs/APBTs initially came form the same stock. While in America the dogs were being selectively bred to be larger, in the UK (particualrly in Stafforshire England) they prefered smaller dogs. This is what eventually led to the two separate breeds that we have today.
12. What an unusual mix. He looks like a staffy mix. He is handsome!
13.
:bad-words: NO pets for 3 years??????Big freaking deal...Like that is punishment, she oviously doesn't care about her pet or she couldn't be so cruel!!!
I couldn't agree more!!! This psycho should never be allowed to own another animal as long as her miserable existance lasts!!! I just get furious when I read that people do things like this and get what essentially amounts to no punishment! Ugh!!!
14. My SBT likes to roll around in dry dusty dirt when he's outside. He gets really dirty and because of this I need to bathe him more frequently than I would otherwise. I think I'll try K's suggestion with the wet flannel next time. Like K, I just use regular dog shampoo from Petco. It has never seemed to have any ill effects. His coat is really smooth and shiny!
15. Definitely consult your vet to make sure that a topical treatment like "Frontline" is safe to use when your dog has scabs and sores like you mentioned. It actually enters the animal's bloodstream so I don't think it would be a problem. As far as the bug-zapper goes, it won't do any good at all because they only work for flying insects like mosquitos and flies, etc... Ticks crawl on the ground and in plants and trees. Spraying an insecticide is the only way that I've heard to control them. Good luck!
16. I think he looks like a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier mix. Has the right size and coloring.
17. What about the stuff that you put between the dog's shoulder blades like "Revolution" or "Frontline"? Have you tried anything like that? I've heard that it works well. I've never tired it myself. Tick collars are worthless from my experience!
18. UNBELEIVABLE! I don't even know what to say... That person clearly has absolutley NO idea what they're talking about! It would be more beneficial to shoot ignorant people like that at birth. This person is definitely from the shallow end of the gene pool!
19. I absolutely LOVE your Bull Terrier Kiwi! I have to get one someday! My Staffy Bull always lays in the frog dog position. Especially when he's pooped out after a long walk or something.
20.
h***, just give me five minutes alone with him and a freshly sharpened pencil!
Ouch!
21. I have a two year old, male Olde English Bulldogge named Titan (pictured to the left under my name) and a four year old, male Staffy Bull named Max. I just can't resist the bully breeds!
22. That is just SICK! It turns my stomach to think that someone could even think to do something like that for any reason. Let alone for entertainment! You know what REALLY sucks though? Unless this guy is a repeat offender, chances are he won't get anywhere near the punishment he deserves! From what I understand, animal cruelty charges are notorious for getting little to no punishment in relation to the offense. It's horrible! Give me five minutes alone with him and Titan (my 120 pound Olde English Bulldogge)!!! (kidding)
23. I don't like it at all! There are two schools of thought when it comes to dog obedience: Aversive training; Which esentially means giving the dog some sort of corrective behavior (i.e. punishment) when the dog doesn't do what you want it to do. Positive Reinforcement; Which is rewarding the dog with attention or a treat or a toy when it performs a behavior correctly. It seems like most or all of us here prefer the positive reinforcement method. Just try arguing the point with someone who believes in aversive training though! I've been to obedience training classes with both types of instructors. I alway thought it would be interesting to get the instructors together to "discuss" their methods. Just for the record, I quit the aversive class after two sessions and quite a few arguments with the instructor in front of the whole class! I think a lot (maybe even most) of the training classes for hunting dogs use aversive training methods unfortunately. I've heard of that ear pinch technique before from a friend that had his lab in a well known (in my area) retreiver training program.
24. That is excellent news! Thanks for the update Old Glory and thanks for doing the right thing!
25. Of course wew have common sense. I'm trying to look at this as objectively as possible but when someone makes a comment like that I simply have to respond! Tongue-in-cheek? I guess all I can say is that maybe you shouldn't make comments that denounce an entire group of dog owners even if it is "tongue-in-cheek". There are bound to be people that are offended by it. It would be no differnet than me making the "tongue-in-cheek" comment that all GSD owners are ignorant. Seriously, c'mon! I certainly don't want to attack you personally Mary's Mom, I've found your posts to be quite accurate and informative for the most part. Even if they are a bit long due to the extra content. :D Actually making the text for your responses a different color does make them easy enough to follow.
