I have not seen crates with doors on either end (I think that would compromise the integrity of the crate structure anyway...I am probably wrong, though) However, I have seen crates that open from the top as well as the front, and front opening crates with a side door. JB pets has them, care-a-lot pets, dr's foster and smith have the top opening ones, and I beleive even pet edge might have some.

I'm sorry, I LOVE pitbulls, I have one, but this is where people go wrong: they ARE a TERRIER. They will tend to be AGGRESSIVE toward other dogs. You cannot love that trait out of them. MY pitbull is not aggressive toward MY dogs, but she is a pitbull and has met dogs that, for some reason or other, she just hasn't like the cut of thier jib. she has started fights with other dogs. Some pitbulls are not aggressive toward dogs--SOME ARE. You cannot love and baby that out of them.

for the chewing...i guess it's all been covered. but i'm surprised NO ONE mentioned the weather as to the peeing outside thing! i know my girls (well, the smaller girls--gypsy and india) do not like to pee outside when it is cold...the reason being that the nether regions are very, very, close to frozen ground....I conclude this from seeing how they spend four months of the year just spreading thier feet further apart so they can pee, instead of squatting as they usually do.

they put more meat in cat food, and more oil, too.

IF people get it, just one spot, it can, and usually does, go away on it's own. if it's just one spot on an animal, same deal. BUT if it's an actual infestation, i beleive you need vet help. Also, if you develop ringworm, but it takes place on the scalp instead of the skin, it's not "regular" ring worm and needs to be seen by a dermatologist.
:Dog_run: Re-Run once ate an entire stick of butter. Oh what fun!! Fortunately it was summer and we just let him outside. The vet said most should come right back up and it did. What didn't came out the next day and I do believe it was through the eye of a needle. I can definately sympathize with you!!
one time, sandy and fang got in a fight...over a stick of butter....I had left it on the counter and went out of the kitchen. when I came back, they were like to kill each other over this stick of butter...except that Calliope ate it, all but the wrapper, while they were fighting...so it was all for naught...

sandy ate a butterbowl of bacon grease...and tossed it back up onto the floor...in two spots...then shoved newspaper over one of the spots to "clean" it up....how could I be mad at that?

Hello all! today, I am so excited...I was sitting there, in psychology of personality, new semester, all keyed up to learn, and I'm thinking of my dogs, so I'm hearing tags jangling and a nose sniffing...then I realized it was REAL. There was a dog in class. I dared to turn around...his poor owner (a legally blind woman) was yanking his harness, because Max, (the guide dog) had his nose shoved down the front of my book bag, sniffing whatever dog smells there were left in there. She finally had to pop his choke collar to get him away from me (I swear I didn't touch him, or talk to him, he was just interested in my stuff) after she sat down, I asked her name, his name, and got to pet him. She had to remove his "uniform" (his harness) and then he just leaned into me. he and sandy look so much the same...they're both labrador mixes, and she called him a golde-dor. She had to fly to florida to pick him up, what a LOVE he was, though! He slept throughout class and even had a dream and started wuffing in the middle of a CNN video...suddenly, psych is my FAVORITE class...a dog in there just makes the whole room more friendly, even if I can't touch him for most of it....I did miss my dogs a whole lot everytime I looked at him, though...

OH, this reminds me SO MUCH of when I got sick this summer! It might have been a horribly bad case of allergies, but I digress. My mother kept saying, "I think the dogs made you sick..." and I vehemently denied it all. Until one day, I made myself this big, tall, glass of ice water. I put it on the headboard (book shelf headboard) and took a nap. Buddy had gone to sleep with his head on my pillow, watching me breathe since the congestion was so bad I was having difficulty breathing. I woke up once, expecting my cup to be full to the brim and ice cold...it was at the same level and room temperature, but the ice had all melted. "hm." I thought, "must be the heat" I took a big gulp or four, and went back to sleep. An hour later, I rolled over in time to see Buddy help himself to his fill of water, and go back to sleep. "OH NO!" I remember thinking. "She was right!" (strangely enough, I got BETTER after drinking after buddy.....)

thanks for your replies...after much soul searching, I realized Calliope would probably not accept this fella, cause that's how she is...and Gypsy might have dominance issues with him, so he's out of both "packs" and I'd have to have another segregated dog, but a LONELY one, since i'm so busy...it breaks my heart, but i guess I'm not going to get him...however, if he shows up at the shelter, nuetered and vaccinated and chipped, I might have to change my mind...who knows?

today's classifieds read: My name is Bengi, please give me a good home! Bengi is a "blond" corgi, a "yard dog" that comes with a chain and collar (woo hoo, right? ) Anyway, i LOVE corgis, have two mixes...should I get him? I'm so busy now, adding number seven would increase my work only fractionally, I really want this dog but don't know if it'd be fair to get him when I'm working two jobs and going to school full time...I mean, we'd barely get to know each other! And if he needs training, it would be erratic, 'cause of my schedule...but a CORGI! On a chain! and I checked the number...he's in MY TOWN, of about 600 people...I could probably WALK to where he is...should I get him? It'll be a few days before I answer this post, (gotta work next two days) so give me your opinions, please! PS, i have a sneaking suspicion they're making room for a christmas puppy...I don't know if i'd really be rescuing him or doing another dog a bad turn!

Question for project I'm working on...
Peng1zrule replied to atghylin's topic in Everything about dogs
just because a dog is scared of people, doesn't mean it was used in a fight ring...She could have been a feral, or wild, dog. Dumped as a pup, other humans threw things, yelled, and kicked or hit her to run her off, she learned to avoid humans because humans were dangerous to her survival. Once learning that humans are actually kind of nice, she could change her behavior (I had a feral dog for a few months...I beleive her to be a bona fide Carolina Dog, or "Dixie Dingo") Anyway, as for the snarling, it's two fold...one, her pups are in there! dead or alive, she's gotta protect her offspring. two, she is cornered, no escape, humans have hurt her and conditioned her to avoid them, and she's got nowhere to go...she bites to back off the human, not because she hates them or anything...she's scared. -
Sandy...I didn't name her, but she was white-blonde as a baby, so I assume they called her that because to them, she was "sandy" colored. Buddy...sandy's friend...ie, her "buddy" Gypsy...I didn't name her, but she was found in a dumpster by my aunt, so they called her gypsy. I likely would have named her Sassy, but gypsy fits her, too...she's had three homes already! Fang...pound puppy. he is a siberian husky and looks "wolfish" by default, and I read White Fang and liked the idea of his name staying Fang, so there you go...one Fang India...black all over, like India Ink. Calliope...pronounced KUH LY UH PEE...the greek muse of music...as she is an american pitbull terrier, I really wanted her to have a very sweet name, not anything tough or mean sounding, and nothing that could be construed as a tough name...I never even allowed her to be nick named, so the vet calls her "the little brown dog" I have other animals!! Ziggie is named after David Bowie--his Ziggie Stardust persona. He doesn't fit it at all...I could've named him "Move" 'cause that's what I say alot to him. Katherine is named after a vampire from LJ smith's books (katherine could turn into a white kitten...katherine is a white cat...besides that, she's kind of...spiritied) Josie and Howie...just two names I liked (they're parakeets and I wanted them to have a playful sound attached to thier names) I had a betta, his name was Daryl, but I ended up calling him Fishy D. McFisherton...he let me pet him and would come to the top of the tank when my alarm clock went off. Boy, I loved that fish.

Buying a new puppy...$500 deposit..need advice!
Peng1zrule replied to a topic in Everything about dogs
I have not read the other replies...seems to me a reputable breeder would give only refundable deposits...non refundable seems to me the breeder is dealing dollar signs instead of dogs. Non refundable doesn't neccessarily mean he/she is breeding only for the money, but to me, I would take a second look at what all is being offered...health garuntees? hip/eye/elbow/temperment checked? DNA test? It is common for a breeder to take a deposit on the dogs...usually before he or she even BREEDS the dogs, though...not after they are born and people are waiting for them to become old enough to take home. -
dogs don't have a "scared smell" but they do have anal gland fluid, which, when they are stressed or scared, they can empty out. they also empty them when they go to the bathroom....one reason I didn't like Dogs Never Lie About Love was because the author seemed ignorant...when one of his dogs was in a confrontation, she emptied her anal glands, and he didn't know what it was--he offered the theory that this was the "smell of fear"

I do not understand why people assume that Pit Bulls are vicious.
Are you out of your mind or just stupid? 5 1/2 million people are injured each year by dogs. Hear the screams. The only solution is to hunt and eat the dogs. Find out how!!! www.wastedpress.com
i think your post just answered which of the above YOU are--STUPID. lame-brained, moronic, an imbecile, would also apply. 5.5 million PLUS people are injured by cars every year...what's your plan for those "killing machines"? thousands of left handed people die using right handed products....again, plan??

I definately agree with working on training her more. put cody outside or take zoey somewhere (outside?) and use food treats to get her attention--training REALLY builds a bond. Also, just keeping her with you more will foster a bond--India is so reserved, so aloof, I had a hard time really bonding with her. However, I changed her from outside-inside dog to inside only dog, and we began spending almost every minute of my free time together. I felt a bit closer to her, but had no idea how much she had grown to love me--when she's been outside all day (she went back to being inside-outside when I got super busy) she will stand on her back feet and clap when I go to let her in. She usually claps only when she really, really, wants something, or when she's very excited--just the sight of me makes her so happy she claps! One time, I had her in the bathroom all day, and when I let her out to give her some "free time" while I took a shower, she walked up to me and put her paw on my knee. I was just brushing my hair but I stopped and placed my hand on her head. She squinted up her eyes, the equivalant of a doggie ear-to-ear grin....just spending tons of time lounging around with her brought about this bond!

differences between American and German German Shepherds
Peng1zrule replied to a topic in German Shepherd Dogs

... for a pet, i'd pick american lines,
Why?
I beleive that an american dog, because of the american lifestyle, doesn't have a whole lot of working drive. When I think of a dog for protection work, gaurd work, that sort of thing, I don't automatically think American...I beleive most american bred dogs don't have the same working drive as german bred dogs...personal opinion, from an american. -
you could keep a short, light leash on the dog at all supervised times, and there are "no-jump" harnesses. Personally, and lots of trainers disagree when I admit I do this, but I grab a dogs feet for jumping up on me. I hold on until the dog starts to pull at it's feet, then I drop them and turn away. I guess this works because it's uncomfortable for the dog and grabbing at the legs is a dominant behavior, so you've made the jump up unsatisfying as well as letting the dog know that as an alpha, you don't like it. For Calliope, who, like your jada, is part kangaroo and spends most of her indoor time hopping onto counters, I slap her paws like a child's hands. I don't know if this would work for anyone else, but I used the command "off" and slap her paws, and she looks at me and I repeat "off" and tell her to back up, a command all my dogs know. I also use "leave it" and make her "leave" the counter (she's usually looking at something on the counter.) This is very "hard" for me to do because she is SUCH a sweetie and even though she often does this to watch me prepare food, she never, ever, goes for the food--she will put her chin on her paws and sigh while I slice bread, but never even reaches for it. One time she did nibble a chicken breast.
-
I see this as dominance--they simply don't want him to be playing with you. OR, they could still see him as threatening, in which case, if they are still jumping when he moves quickly, licking thier lips and nose when he touches them, moving away the second he reaches for something they have, I would say they are protecting you from someone they consider scary--and they would do it in any situation.
why would u like a doberman?
first, I should not take this question seriously as it comes from someone who has chosen to go by the name HITMAN. But, what is wrong with dobermans? honestly? a good, working, dog, developed from a real need, with a strong sense of family and loyalty, a BIG heart, an almost eerie-smart temperment, an advanced amount of intuition....what's wrong with a doberman?
-
absolutely superficially...afghan hounds. borzoi. german shepherds. but there are some dogs that you combine good looks with a working drive, and I swear they're so beautiful I feel pain...like dobermans, american pitbull terriers, and certain hounds. I love great pyreneeses, and of course, the siberian husky.

i don't mean to offend anyone...but for a pet, i'd pick american lines, but be sure you get a reputable breeder who does all health tests and certifications. -
THOSE PICTURES! poor darling dog!!

my dogs and I don't really play games--they tend to play by themselves, without me. I do play with some of them, like fetch with gypsy or tugging things, or rolling around with india...the dog I play with is my bf's GSD, I looooove that dog. The dog loves me, too, so when she hears my car coming, she goes and gets out her squeaky ball. she has it waiting and when I come in, she goes and lays down with it. I'll try to sneak up and grab it, and she will protect it by picking it up. She'll even carry it out of the room to get a drink! Of course, she tends to forget it once she puts it down and drinks, so I wait for her to lay down and just take off at a dead run, and she will look around and give this barking howl and jump to her feet, trying to beat me to it. Sometimes she leaves the room with it and comes back and bumps into me, "look, look, it's not here, let's race to it!" and we will. when i DO get it (and she's infinately more patient than me) I hide it behind my back, squeeze it, and make her "look" for it. she knows I have it, but when she turns around to "look" for it, I place it somewhere not TOO hidden. then I show her both hands and let her search the loveseat, where I always sit. then she really looks for it, searching high and low. she uses her sense of smell to guide her to it. she loves this game, and so do I!
