in my part of the country, almost all black chows are called bear. red and white chows, not quite so much...usually they get names like snowball. the red ones are anyone's guess. but, bear is the dominant name of all chowchows in this part of the world!

Hazel, sorry it took me so long to see your reply to me. I would correct peskiness EVERY time it happened. Jumping up is a dominant thing, it's kind of one step away from humping. Just less aggressive than actually doing it. If coal is not aggressive toward you, I would suggest doing some very dominant things toward him--like when he's just not "getting" what you are telling him to do (stalling or otherwise playing dumb until you get frustrated and let him off the hook) put your hand over his muzzle, lean in, and make your voice low. speaking from the back of your throat, tell him what you want. then give him a chance to respond. This is what I do with ALL my dogs. I will give a physical correction if I am not obeyed and it is a command I am SURE they know. This is a dominant thing-to grab the muzzle. I would not tell anyone to do it if the dog is likely to snap at the hand or the face. Another thing I do is to put my arm over the dog's shoulder. It's hard to describe, it's not quite an embrace, more just a draping of the arm across the dog from one side, with the arm resting fully against the far side of the dog. Most dogs move away from this--it's a simple way of saying, "I'm boss" it's uncomfortable to submissive dogs and some dominant dogs just won't stand for it. Gypsy, who will sometimes disregard all her training and be very aggressive toward other dogs, will be calmed down and brought back into control after five or ten minutes of sitting still with my arm draped over her. It's quite different from a hug...if done right, the dog knows it's NOT a hug. Good luck!

I got the airline crates, too. the "tent" ones didn't work cause the dogs would just push at the sides of them...not very containing. I love wire ones for training, but I think the dogs like the plastic ones better once they are trained...more like a hideaway. I like the folding crates of any kind because they are portable.

I'll just do a quck rundown of each of my "darlings" Sandy: (lab/golden mix...was told there was chow but now don't beleive it) she is as sweet as can be...but twice as stubborn Buddy: (corgi/beagle mix) smarter than a whip but has more energy than a perpetual motion machine Gypsy: (shih tzu/schnauzer/etc mix) VERY loving, said of schnauzers and shih's, dog aggressive, attributed to the terrier part of a schnauzer Fang: (siberian husky) he's funny. I don't know how to describe it but personality Plus Plus Plus. he's got a prey drive, and he is, fascinatingly, selectively deaf. India: (corgie/beagle mix) as quirky as can be, super smart, but it takes something short of natural disaster to listen to me when she doesn't want to. Calliope: (apbt, supposedly) loving. smart. loving. darn near genius. loving. con: prey drive, strange dog aggression, energy like a coiled spring.
He doesn't understand that we don't have to play with him 24/7 and he CAN go do things on his own. :-?
actually, he DOES understand...I call this behavior dominance--I want you to play with me RIGHT NOW, because I SAID SO. This goes for petting and feeding, too. I actually correct this behavior with a stern "NO" or by sending them away from me, or making them stay in a sit or down

I don't have one, but they are BREATHTAKING!!

the thing is...he was "cornered" and you went for his prize. he had to fight or flight, and under the table, there's only fight. GOOD FOR YOU to take the alpha tone and let him know he was wrong. absolultely what I would have done! he didn't get scared...he quickly switched roles...from alpha to beta.

if it wasn't happening to me. My neighbor got two puppies. I have no idea why he got one, let alone two, when he has two full grown dogs chained up in his backyard. The outdoor dogs have never been brushed, washed, or walked...and I mean NEVER. However, he got two more and they are male and female, and mixes. He claims they are purebreeds but I'm sure if you looked at the bottom of thier feet, they would have 100% mutt stamped on them. One is a border collie mix he said he paid 60, yes sixty, dollars for...and that she's a purebred chow. mmhm. the other is a black and tan hound mix with a coat like a rottweiler. also 'purebred." a gift from "a guy up the road" mmhmm. the man is crazy. he bragged to a friend (and I overheard) that he was going to dump them on me when he didn't want them anymore. I told him he was insane if he thought I would take them. Then one turned up missing. He knocked on my door, at seven forty five on a saturday morning, and asked if I had his dog. I was in my pajamas and told him she had ruined my white pajama pants last night and I hadn't seen her since. He walked away without reply. I called out, "I hope you find her!" and shut the door. Monday, he called the police on me. they actually searched my house for the little mutt. I have SIX dogs. they are current on vacs and they are finally all nuetered, and this man thinks i want his little mixed breed female puppy. No sir! He spent the next few days avoiding me. Finally, I got ahold of him (he didn't move fast enough to get inside his house) and I asked him what he was thinking...he blamed it all on his girlfriend and basicly ran me in circles, so I finally said why didn't he think anyone called the pound on his pup? Sure enough, yesterday he comes up to me and shows me this peice of paper. said, "that's how much it cost me to get that damn mutt out of the pound!" I said, "maybe you should have kept the damn mutt in your damn yard!" and he just looked at me and walked away. I wonder if that was an apology... PEOPLE!! ARGH!!

Stop the world; I wanna get off!

I'm so sorry. it sounds like you need a BIG HUG. ((((((((())))))))))))) -
while your dog does look chow, splotches on the tongue are like moles...everybody can get 'em, so don't allow them to rule out your baby because of some tongue splotches! one thing that apbt people are especially fond of is to take thier well behaved dogs to the legislators writing these rules...Vickie Hearne even wrote of a New York City lawmaker who reversed her approval of a law because apbt owners turned up enforce in her office with their well behaved pets...she said, "I just can't do it...they're too sweet!" (about the dogs) My advice would be to organize a bunch of well behaved breed representatives and have them meet these rule-writers...and of course, write letters vigorously.
Besides big jail time these people should be neutered... Don't want their stupidity genes being passed on *sigh*
they've already reproduced...not with each other, luckily...that could be like breeding two deep rolling aerial pigeons together...

i'm a bad, bad little dog mom...i would let the little one in the bed with me. However, she's probably learning how to get your attention by all this crying. I keep a spray bottle by the bed, and when they wake me up at night, I give a quick spritz. My dogs are all adults, however, and I'm not sure if this would have a negative impact on your dog's relationship to you and her crate. You could try training her to go into the crate, as a pleasurable experience. I take a box of easy to eat treats (like the little marrow bones) and open the crate door. I kneel on the floor with the dog sitting, facing the open crate door. I give one treat, let the dog see me toss one in, and say, "go home!" I'll put the dog in (guiding by the scruff so that they have to walk in by themselves) and give another treat. I let them find the first one (holding the door shut) then push yet another through the door. I add context clues--very good! you've gone home! and let the dog out. This works best with a hungry dog. After a few days of this (we practice several repititions every hour) I lead the dog into the bedroom with a bowl of his/her dinner in my hand. Go home! I say, and let them go into the crate. I put the bowl in the crate, lock it, and leave them alone while they eat. I let them out when they are done. And, of course, I give them toys in the crate...they end up hoarding them in the crates, actually. for several weeks, no treats are given unless they "go home" and at the very end, they go home whenever I tell them to.

congratulations!! your very hard work is starting to pay off! i'm so happy for you!

it's dominance...she's aiming just to put her mouth around thier muzzle but they are smaller so she grabs the head...all she's saying is "I'm the boss!"
-
these people make me sick to my stomach! both as a dog owner and a human being...In my mind, Diane Whipple was murdered. I can't beleive people tried to blame the breed for this act...when it was really two idiots who thought they were "tough enough" for this hard working breed...I hope the judge stipulates that they will NEVER be able to own another animal, be it mammal, amphibian, or feathered, ever again.
-
aw, good kavik...mine do kind of the same thing. If I tell them to leave a treat or bowl or something, I have to pick it up and hand it to them before they'll stop "leaving" it.

aarrggghh...the Jehovah's Witnessess
Peng1zrule replied to courtnek's topic in Everything about dogs
wow, is all I can say...did you never think Jehovah's Witnesses go online? I say this because I am one. The jokes about dogs being good judges of character crossed the line. -
I don't see the need to get rid of her--he FELL on her. maybe hurt her, maybe not. BUT, what he did is VERY aggressive--if another dog were to come down like that on her, she'd of bit, too. She didn't break the skin, and I beleive it's no coincidence.

"these dogs are killing each other!"
Peng1zrule replied to pei obssessed's topic in Everything about dogs
people always ask if i'm not gonna break up my dogs when they're playing, or I'll break a fight and they'll ask how I knew it turned from one to the other...I don't know HOW I know...I just know it sounds different to me... -
i think they're just working things out. However, with the number and size of dogs I have, I would not allow this...after a couple times, I would determine who's dominate and respect that, but not allow such situations to happen again.

your aunt CANNOT love the dog that much if her answer to incontinance was to make the dog outside only. Poisoning a dog to death is not the way to go. Many, many things can go wrong. However, anti freeze is known to be lethal to a dog. A small amount can do it, and dogs and cats like the taste. (It's sweet) I am not condoning or approving of poisoning an animal...I would just like to know that an animal is going quickly and without pain. (Although I imagine poisoning is not a pleasant feeling?) IF you would like to have a vet do it, get someone with a truck to drive you--put the dog in a crate or cross tie in the bed of the truck...you in cab, riding, the truck owner, driving, and the dog in the back, in a crate, not smelling up the inside of a vehicle, and the vet can even step outside and euthanize the dog. Good Luck, I guess.

i don't mean to insult you, gooey, but how knowledgeable can she be if she didnt' realize you have to walk a dog on a leash to use the bathroom and didn't know the dog had problems meeting people and was dog aggressive? Also...if you're feeding a dog for more than three days, in some states, that means you have the legal right to call it yours...seeing as the dog lives with you, I think the dog is yours right now. (a lawyer usually answers questions over the phone for free, so you can verify if this is true for your area or not) AND...I beleive that with the baby, the last thing she'll want in the house is a dog...I think she has very little emotional attachment to the dog and would willingly give it up, and might even be hoping you'll never ask when she's taking it back.

I've never been able to find "Adam's Task" in my area, but I definately KNOW the title and the author--Vickie Hearne rocks. For most people, her name doesn't mean alot...but to pitbull people, Hearne is an incredible woman. I remember when she passed away, and everyone was upset. Another incredible book is Bandit: Dossier of a Dangerous Dog. She ended up saving a dog who had bitten people...she never intended to keep him but ended up having him anyway...I love how she gives into anthropomorphism when talking about her dogs and how they react to her...
well i am not trying to yell at noone. Its just not all dogs are alike. they all are dif in there own way. I walk my dog on a leash he is never out of my sight. not just couse his is a pit but couse of alot of other reasons to. If he was a poodle i would do the same. ya i know they where breed to fight but not all of them can. i intend on never leting a dog fight happen. i am always there with him. I am just saying not to let any dog around another one is kinda depressing. they need to be around others to learn how to act. even when he is around another dog he is on a short lead. i have better controle of him. i don't let other kids in my yard around my dogs and my dog stay's in cage intell i am able to watch him. Them 8 pup i made a mistake with i do feel bad. But i did learn from it. I love all dogs and cats. I do watch him like a halk but if he was going to trun my watching him would not help. But i do think he is good and he will allway be. But that will not make me not keep an eye on him.
it's great you intend on never letting a dog fight happen. it's true not all pitbulls "can" fight. I've been in those shoes before. They don't fit. Calliope started a fight that left her with a scar on her face. To deny the nature of the dog is as big a crime as to slander it... Awhile ago, someone posted a newspaper article in which someone had allowed thier pit to roam, and it had killed another person's pet. She said that the incident taught her about "the nature of the dog, and how they can turn." She likened the breed to a wild animal--because she had denied what these dogs can, and will, do. Her ignorance/denial caused TWO dogs to die.
