1. I cannot understand why anyone actually wants to view this video? What is it you hope to understand or gain from seeing what you already know is ugly footage of dogs tearing into one another? What educational value due you expect to gain? Or is it the base nature of mankind, we WANT to see that which disgusts us and makes us cringe? Like many going past a horrible accident on the roadside craning their necks for a better view? Just curious.
2. Oh I'm sorry to hear this, Gladis is far too young and sweet! I propose a toast to Gladis, let us celebrate her life and wish her well on her journey to the Rainbow Bridge. :drink1: Gladis has known love in her life, she will be loved and remembered forever.
3. Dangit, should have waited a couple of days. I already donated via the red cross site. The day after, MY company finally stated that they would match employee donations that were made through the company website. The Richmond VA Just For Fun Agility League also made a $100 donation to a well respected (not HSUS) animal resuce organization. We may send more in a week or two but since hurricane season is far from over, we wanted to keep some money in reserve just in case.
4. Not to beat you with a stick.. :) , but yes, you should have had at least POTENTIAL homes lined up for puppies before you even bred your dog. Whether they are show or working lines does not matter, if the parents have PROVEN themselves in the ring or in the field. Of course you did screen for health related issues and you do follow up with your pups for their lives right? Breeding to IMPROVE the breed is another 'why do you breed' issue. Just breeding 'because' or to add to the population or for a multitude of other reasons is NOT responsible. If you would have reasonably expected 6-8 pups, should have had at least 10 prescreened homes waiting. That IS just part of what a responsible breeder does.

I have heard great things about Cowboy Magic for detangling and soothing static issues, on dogs! http://www.cowboymagic.com/
6. Nothing to add, in agreement with all else, just waiting for the rest of the story! :user:
7. It sounds fishy to me too. I do agree the little boy should not be hurt by keeping the dog longer than necessary but unless the woman had at least 75% of what was paid, she would not get the dog back. If there is a no kill shelter or better yet, Boxer rescue, I might get in touch with them for some help. If she wants the dog back and does not have ANY money to refund yet, uh....nope!
8. First, find out specifically what noise codes you are bound by. Dogs gotta bark! Not non stop, not all night, but dangit they gotta bark! If Pooh Bear is a treat fiend, work on that watch me or quiet command with treats. Perhaps even throw in a 'that'll do' to tell him barking time is over. Geez, Candy barks too much in my opinion but I give her a short time to bark then tell her to knock it off for a while. Next time you're A$$HOLE neighbor yells at you or your dog and says the dog should be put to sleep, smile sweetly and say thanks for the oh so helpful advice and then turn your back on them! Here's another idea, got a lawn mower? Turn the danged thing on and tell Pooh Bear to let 'er rip!
9. Story with photos of Steffi's return. http://www.bestfriendsagility.com/findSteffi.html
10. That's her, hope her ordeal is truly over and she will be happy and healthy soonest.
11. Yeah, in retrospect, it's funny. Wish I had it on film! At the time, I was questioning the sense (or lack thereof) in bringing all 3. It's a theraputic swim center, geared towards the older dog, the arthritic or injured dog, dogs recovering from surgery etc.
12. This just in, no more details are known as yet. Great news: Lost Dog Found! ****Celebrations: Steffi is home!! > >From the TexasShowDogs List..and SETTERS-L . > > Don't have all the details yet, but Steffi, the GSD lost in Hillsboro TX 3 > weeks ago was recovered tonight. She is resting at the vets, a little > dehydrated, but otherwise, appearing in good health.
13. I doubt I will ever take all 3 together to swim again unless I have help! Too crazy and perhaps too dangerous for the dogs for me to handle alone. They ran me ragged, scared me speechless and generally did a great job of exhausting me. I can handle Jesse and Candy together, but Candy and Brittany jazz each other up and get a bit too wild. Started ok, I took Brittany with us, she has never gone in the pool so I wanted her to be along to watch ONLY. It is a rule at the pool that a dogs first swim is assisted, for good reason I might add. They teach the dog that exiting is via the ramps, not the sides and corners of the pools. Jesse and Candy had their harnesses on, Jesse is so much more eager to go in after a toy when he has competition. I put a flotation vest on Britttany 'just in case.' I thought I might try to introduce her to shallow water at some point. Well she got over excited watching Jesse and Candy swim and fell in the danged pool. This pool is about 3.5 feet deep, she submerged then popped right up, I slipped into the water beside her and helped her to the ramp and out of the pool. I had not planned on getting THAT wet today but what the heck. A short while later, I noticed Brittany getting ready to upchuck, tried to get her outside but was not fast enough. Cleaned that up, I think she swallowed a bit of water during her foray into the pool. I decided to concentrate on Jesse as he needs the exercise the most. The girls were playing tug nearby. As I was getting Jesse ready to go in the water, I heard a splash. There are a total of 3 pools in the room. Jesse and I were at the lap pool. I looked at the training pool, nope, no dog in there. Ohmygod, Candy was in the 'hot tub'! This pool is 'above ground' and is kept covered with a heavy plastic tarp to keep the warmth in. Candy had jumped into the pool, tarp and all. I ran to get her out, I could see she was ok but the adrenaline surged as I thought of the tarp being on TOP of her. I grabbed her harness and just lifted her straight up, and hugged her to me. I think our hearts were triple timing at the same pace. Ok, get the girls where I can see them, tell them to stay and get Jesse in the pool. Heck get Candy in the pool too. They swim around a bit then it's time to rinse and dry off. Jesse kept pushing the girls out of the way, I rinsed him once and rinsed him twice, finally got him to wait for me by the blower hose. The blower is not a heated dryer, just blows the water off. This is Jesse's favorite part! He walks back and forth while I direct the air on him, he stretches and curves his body, arches his back, really gets into the air! The girls are just the opposite, neither cares for the blowing air one bit. So from now on, for safety AND sanity's sake, I won't be taking all 3 dogs unless I've got back up!
14. good for you! Hopefully that idiot will have some 2nd thoughts about letting his dog roam and foul the area. I don't consider what you did being a snitch. You were simply having a friendly chat with a lawman at the right time!
15. sorry to hear of Kes' tummy troubles! I know how bad you feel making her go without any food. Even though it IS the best way to settle her gut, it is so hard to look at those pleading eyes and say nope, no food you. Please keep us posted and keep yours and Kes' spriits up, this too shall pass!
16. Congrats to you and Buddy! This is great!
17. Today I met with a friend to practice some agility with our current competing dogs. For each of us, we are working with our 3rd agility dog. We had to reminisce (sp?) a bit as we both started agility at the same time, about 10 years ago, with our big black dogs. Of course my big black dog is Jesse, his is a Lab/Weim mix named Zeus. We are both a bit sad that we cannot RUN with our 1st agility dogs anymore. We agreed that our 1st agility dogs taught US so much and even with the mistakes WE made, these dogs set the bar fairly high for the others to follow. We each had brought all of our dogs with us, after working with the younger girls, we brought the old boys out for some fun. Jump bars were at 8 inches or just dropped to the ground. The old boys got to show us that they still knew the game and were willing to play even though at a far slower pace than yesteryear. Very low jumps, big tunnels, and modified weaves, that is all Jesse can do anymore. Well, he could do an Aframe if it was very very low! I lure him around every SECOND pole in the weaves, so he still is flexing but does not have to contort his body as tightly as for every single pole. He would most likely fall if he tried. It is very obvious that Jesse enjoys coming out to play and it brings me such joy to see him smile. I dropped the girls off at the house and took Jesse to Petsmart afterwards. He gets so excited going in there, he loves to meet and greet. Too bad Walmart won't hire him. We were walking through the food aisles, passing by the bags of Science Diet. Don't know what's going into S.D. nowadays but I had to DRAG him away, he was sniffing the bags with huge interest, even poking at them with his nose. At the register, the clerk asked about giving him a cookie, I said sure just watch your fingers! Jesse tends to overreach just a bit, or is that bite? 8) The clerk barked out 'SIT' to him, I said "this dog is almost 14, he does not have to sit for cookies anymore! "
18. Red is adorable! I love the TOOTH! Reminds me of my brothers dog Rocky. Kudos to your friend for adopting this cutie!
19.
See, right now, I think the only breeders there should be are people who have the best dogs. Meaning... you see them and think amazing, you witness them perform and think amazing, you interact with them and think amazing!
Soooooo, who decides? Say for instance you and I both were looking at male Greater Neputune Chowhounds. We need to decide which dog is the BEST to use for stud on the most amazing bitch in the world. You are looking at one dog, I am looking at another. Both are well within the written standard for the breed. Both are equally titled, breed champs, all health clearances done, both dogs have proven working ability. Both dogs have proper temperaments for their breed. Both males would bring attributes that would compliment the bitch's background. The dog you are looking at has a slimmer head and a bit lighter bone than the dog I am looking at. Your PREFERENCE is for a dog that is somewhat lighter built though again, still within the standard. My PREFERENCE is a dog with a bit more bone and a somewhat heavier head but again, still within the standard. Who decides which male is the most amazing, the most suitable, the perfect dog that should be bred? Do we flip a coin? There is NO perfect dog or bitch. The good breeders pour over pedigrees and go back many generations to try and determine what the strengths and weaknesses may be by breeding THAT male to THIS bitch. Very few simply look at a dog, watch him/her move, watch him/her work and decide. Looking at the dog is just the the prelim.
20. I believe genetics play a huge role. No, they won't guarantee that a pup will have the same success in obedience/agility/tracking/ etc as the parents but they are the groundwork for such success. What you do with these attributes is what can garner success or leave you scratching your head in puzzlement. Breeding is by far no exact science but careful breeding does tip the scales towards what you're breeding for. Kat, do you have any info on other pups from the BC litter where the one pup is a dud in the ring? Could it be the guy training the BC pup did not find the method that turned HIS dog on? I am constantly looking for ways to tweak and improve the way I train with Candy, constantly learning what works for HER. For instance, I'm learning that she really wants me to be close to her and run with her, trying to layer obstacles in agility is not always as successful as I wish. If both parents have sharp/shy temperaments, pups are far more likely to have the same. If both parents are high drive, eager to learn and please, pups are far more likely to exhibit these same traits. There are GOOD breeders in the world. While I don't know of any 'perfect' breeder, something Jesse's breeder said years ago has stayed with me. A woman I knew who had a Malinios, once told Jesse's breeder that Jesse had the very best temperament she had seen thus far in ANY Belgian. Breeders reply, "if you don't have the correct temperament, you've got nothing." Of course the flip side is that some Belgian folk would think Jesse is TOO laid back, they like a dog that is a bit more on it's tippy toes. I would say that Jesse is a dog with moderate drive, not terribly high but always tried his best to do my bidding. Jesse was not a conformation show dog, didn't have what it took, this did not make him any less worthy of a proper, loving home in his breeders eye. He was sold on a strict neuter contract, I did not get his AKC papers until I showed the breeder proof of his neuter. It was also in the contract that if at ANY time for ANY reason I could not/did not want to keep Jesse, he was to be returned to her. Breeders differ in the weight they put on various aspects of their breed, some say breed TYPE comes first, some say TEMPERAMENT is most important, some say HEALTH & SOUNDNESS come first. I think most GOOD breeders strive for a combination of the above with other less critical components as the icing on the cake. By less critical I mean things like ear set, eye color, tail length. Of course TYPE is important, you want your dog to be recognizable as the breed it is supposed to be! Of course TEMPERAMENT is important, you want to be able to live with your dog without fear of getting bitten, also without having to constantly shield your dog from life due to overwhelming insecurities that make your dog run screaming in the other direction at all times. HEALTH & SOUNDNESS are of course crucial, if you're going to take part in creating life, creating HEALTHY life is an absolute obligation. When my Jesse is gone, I want another Belgian from a responsible, dedicated, and caring breeder. I may consider rescuing a Belgian, depends on what is known about the dog, the dogs age, the dogs temperament, the dogs needs. There are activities that I want to do with my dog so I will want a dog that is physically able to do these as well as a dog that will ENJOY the activity. The odds will be in my favor if I go to a breeder who has bred for the right combo of health, temperament, brains, beauty, and biddability.
21. Calling Judge Wapner! 8) I'm so glad the police noted that the guys dog was offleash. That REALLY swings the decision in your favor. It is too ridiculous that you even have to go to court, YOUR dogs were onleash, YOUR dogs were minding their business, YOU were adhering to the law. It's a danged shame the cops did not have the authority to on the spot say tough to the guy, his dog was offleash and therefore he is clearly in the wrong. OF COURSE a dog under attack should have the right to fight back. Are your two dogs ok? Either of them bitten? I gather you were not bitten, you would really have a case against him if so but I'm very glad you were not.
22. What? No photo of Tiggie in her birthday suit? 8) Happiest Birthday young'un!
23. Lately, Jesse has been sleeping so soundly that he's given me a few brief scares, have had to physically rouse him. This morning he had me just about convinced that he was dead. He had gotten me up before 6 so he could go outside. After he came back in, we went back to sleep. The girls woke me at 7:30 as they wanted their breakfast. Got all bowls ready, tried to wake Jesse. He would not wake up. I stroked his side, rubbed his head, moved his legs, no response. Uh oh. Laid my hand on his side, thought I could feel a very slight rise and fall. Whew. Kept rubbing his body, even vigorously. No response. Stomped the floor, walked around him, nothing. Gave the girls their food. Went back to him, rubbing him and even shaking him gently. Opened the front door so the sunlight fell across him. Held a liver treat in front on his nose. Still nothing! I'm wondering if I'll need the brochure about pet cremations. I'm on the floor with him, moving his legs and rubbing his head. Just as I sat back, he popped his head up, looked at me, looked over his shoulder, saw the girls eating, and looked back at me like, 'Hey! Where is MY food?' Jesse is mostly deaf and his eyesight aint what it used to be but I thought for sure the physical touching would have roused him sooner! He got up and followed me to the kitchen then zipped back over to where he eats. Very perky, just fine. I, on the other hand, have a few more gray hairs.
24. Guess I'm the odd one out, I don't find these dogs visually appealing. Note that I'm not saying anything them or her breeding them, just don't care for the look.
25. I would surely report this idiot to all who would listen. Is the trainer the owner of the club? If not, I'd certainly start with them. The lady with the lab isn't going back there is she? I would, with a baseball bat and let him try and do something like that with my dog!
