1. This is not directed at anyone here but a carryover from another list that had a similar topic. PLEASE do not try to pass your dog off as a service dog. The people who NEED their dogs with them have fought long and hard to be allowed to bring their dogs into places that are normally off limits. If anyone were to indicate their dog is a service dog when it is not, and for some strange reason that dog misbehaved, it could rock the boat for those who truly need their dogs with them. There was a thread on this other list regarding Home Depot planning on banning dogs, apparently a contractor brought his dog along, the dog barked, ran around some, and scared some people, and Home Depot may have to ban dogs from their places of business. Legally they cannot ban service dogs at this time but still, no sense in making them think about it.
2. Oh Kendalyn, I hope Buck is ok! Something that is easily fixable. I'll check back here in a bit for an update. C'mon Buck, we are all pulling for you!
3. All 3 of my dogs have been to Home Depot, Candy was the 'worst' behaved, she wanted to visit EVERYONE she saw! I quietly and calmly reminded her to stay close to me and all was well. One lady shopper did stop to greet her, Candy was in heaven. Oh, each one has gone individually, I'd never even consider taking more than one at a time! Jesse has made some eyes pop but no one has objected or shown actual fear. I've taken Jesse into Blockbuster video a couple of times. I always asked first if it was ok. Jesse is a big, black, longhaired dog and to some he looks like a wolf, didn't want anyone freaking out because he was with me. I also did not want anyone to think in error that he is a service dog and therefore allowed special priviledges. I kept him snug by my side as to avoid any chance of him lifting his leg. Of course Jesse is the 'gentleman Belgian' and was good as gold. One little girl in there was so thrilled to meet him, after a few minutes of being petted, he looked at me and begged for us to move on! All of my dogs have also visited the tobacco shop nearby, the owners are dog lovers themselves and make such a fuss over my dogs it's hard to get out!
4. If your friend insists on keeping a choke collar on her dog at all times, STRONGLY suggest she buy a snap bolt and clip the two rings together. This will prevent the dog from catching the live ring on something and choking itself. Of course the dog could still catch the collar and twist it, again choking. Of course a choke should NEVER be left on a dog, only on when a human is attached to dog via a leash.
5. Just yesterday at the dog park some guy made a comment re: 'At least with little dogs it doesn't really matter if they sit when you tell them to'. HUH???? I smiled (really, I did) and nicely said 'but of course it matters, ANY dog living in my house will be taught basically the same' I hear stories of how little dogs get away with food aggression towards their owners, people aggression, dog aggression, all because someone thinks its' cute. BTW, I am NOT referring to you here Aroura, at the dog park is a whole 'nother ballgame, a dog has to defend itself and establish some ground rules there! Candy exhibits some minor snippy behaviour there that I would not tolerate at home or in training. She does not care for big dogs rushing at her!
6. WELL! I visited Harry's webpage after replying, just had to reply again! 8) Dangit, I have a serious case of puppy envy! Specifically Belgian puppy envy! Great photos, if you haven't already, hope you post that link to BELG-L.
7. Sigh, such typical baby Belgian faces! Serious, questioning, intelligent gazes coming from such youngsters! I have photos of Jesse taken on his first day with me, same quizzical look. Both look calm and confidant in the photo. Congratulations on your new pup Harry. I'm glad to see you have also signed up on BELG-L, welcome. I look forward to hearing much much more about Harry and of course seeing lots of photos. Just a side note, at the dog park, a new dog appeared, I thought she was a Malinios. I asked her owner, he said close, she is a Dutch Shepherd. At first, she had NO brindling and looked very much like a typical fawn/gray Mal. Now, she is starting to brindle up and looking more like a Dutchie every day. Heck, Mals are pretty darned rare around here, Dutchies are EXTREMELY rare.
8. That is wonderful Courtnek, you've worked hard and it is paying off!
9.
Aww you lot get cool wildlife like Possums. I've never seen a possum before! We just get foxes and moles and the likes of that :P
I shudder to think of moles! Not because they are creepy, though they are just a bit, but because of the holes that would result. Between mole holes and holes dug by Candy & Brittany trying to get the moles, I'd have craters! It's a real pain to be walking along behind the lawn mower lost in thought then WHAM! &*#@*$ just stepped in a hole! 8)
10.
It is a cramped boring environment for even the smallest dog.
Sheesh, the only one cramped in my house is me! One dog stretches out on the couch, the other stretches out on the loveseat to be next to me, the other stretches out on the floor under my feet. However, as was also in the quoted post, my dogs DO have access to go in and out during the greater part of the day.
11. My girls know exactly when it's time to eat and time for their bedtime cookie. Dog forbid I should sleep in, like past 7am. Not gonna happen. Candy wakes me by jumping on me and enthusiastically licking my face and punching me with her nose. Right about 7pm, she will start sneaking glances at me, Brittany is far more pushy, she will prop herself up and STARE. Starts getting close to 10:30pm, again with the sidelong glances and outright stares, it's COOKIE time! Jesse is far more laid back about mealtime and cookie time but he also knows how to work the system. Just about everyday, he will bring me his bowl, he gets a treat, he then will bring me Brittanys bowl, another treat. Of course the girls enjoy this as they too get a treat. Wait, just WHO IS RUNNING THIS HOUSE! 8)
12.
cool! with that information, I can track you down and stalk you. :evilbat:
Now that is just ugly.
13.
:o :o I personally would have been scared to death..... Possums gross me out dead or alive... Thank goodness your furbabies and yourself are safe and sound...
Oh yeah, I was kinda grossed out, no doggie kisses last night thank you very much!
14. Jesse had to have his anal glands expressed one time, he was about 5-6. I had not seen any butt scooting but one night he appeared very uncomfortable and restless. His glands were impacted. Vet expressed them, he has been fine ever since. Neither of the girls has ever had a problem. All have been kibble fed since birth. They do get the occaisional veggies, they all love carrots and green beans and pumpkin. Tomorrow is supposed to be cooler so today I will try to find some good raw bones for them to chew on. I too feel that ROUTINE expressing of glands perpetuates a dog NEEDING to have them done for the rest of their life. Corrections in diet for a dog that has just 'once in a blue moon' problems is, IMO, the best way to go.
15. Last night, getting ready for bed, I gave the dogs their bedtime cookie and let them out for a final potty. Candy, as usual, zipped down the yard barking at some real or imagined 'threat'. There are a few neighborhood cats who sometimes stop by so she's always on alert and ready to chase. Anyway, I let Jesse back in, Candy pops back in via the doggie door soon after. I'm brushing my teeth and finishing up, ready to turn in. I was about to close and lock the door, thought, let me make sure Brittany is in bed. She is generally quiet and goes to 'her' bedroom and gets on the bed. Hm, she's not there. She's not on the couch, she's not behind the chair, must be still outside. I go to the side door and call her, no response. I go to the back door, don't see her, she does not respond to me calling her. Flying against what I know, that the yard is secure and that nothing horrible has happened to her, I feel a touch of unease. Where is Brittany. I have a much too active imagination and wonder did she get out somehow? Is she ill or injured? My back porch light does not illuminate the entire yard so I grab the lantern and go out, Candy is with me. Candy is acting nervous and a bit freaky, let me tell ya that does not slow my racing heart a bit. Ah, there is Brittany, what the heck is wrong with her. She was crouching and being very still, my heart threatened to leap from my chest. Finally she reacts to my voice and looks at me but stays put. The realization that she has either caught or cornered a critter seeps in. I sneak up closer, what the heck is that! A dead squirrel? A rat?!? Oh, it's a possum! Playing dead in quite a convincing manner. Silly me. It is the first possum I've ever seen here. Not the first possum they've cornered, they did that at my moms house a couple of months ago. Here I am in flip flops, I told possum to play dead a bit longer while I get the dogs in. Had to almost drag Brittany away, her eyes were shining, she was on her toes, in full critter control mode. I knew possum was most likely just playing dead but I wanted to be sure so after coming in and turning off the outside lights, I waited a bit. Letting the girls come with me, I went back out, sure enough possum is gone. Whew! So glad, I would have been upset had Brittany actually killed possum. Not to mention grossed out.
16. This is insane. I can see me now telling the butcher, 'Yep, gonna eat those bones myself! Give me those yummy bones please. The bigger the better, give my teeth a real workout, won't even have to brush as often!' I wish Richmond had an actual butcher shop that I could get some nice bones! Now and then the local grocer has them but it's hit or miss. Plus they are over $1 a pound, can get pricey with big bones.
17. Most, but apparently not all, human brains are adept at recognizing minute differences in what they see, hear, touch, and taste. Otherwise, various but similar shades of color would look exactly the same. ALL Red Delicious apples would taste the same. ALL barking dogs would sound the same. ALL dog fur would feel the same. Without looking, I know which of my dogs is coming down the hallway by the sound their feet and nails make. I even know which dog has just passed by the air intake register by the shift of sound based on their body size. Without looking, I know which of my dogs is barking. I also know if the bark is because a squirrel has been spotted, or if the girls are playing, or if there is someone approaching the house. I could put my Belgian Sheepdog in a room with 100 other Belgian Sheepdogs and find him. Sure it might take a few minutes, he does not hear well so would not hear me calling him. He'd also be very busy trying to romance any females in the room. I would find him. I know his specific look, how he stands, how his body moves, I know his eyes.
18.
ummmmmm........whats the difference, thought they were called laborador retrievers!
?????laborador???? Ok, forget my previous post about feeding the troll as I am about to do the very same!! Bad Carol, bad bad girl! I guess SOMEONE needs to tell the owners of Golden Retrievers and Curly Coated Retrievers and Flat Coated Retrievers that their dogs are henceforth all LABRADOR RETRIEVERS.
19.
Sounds like a great time. I thought about you recently, actually. As much as you get out and do with your dogs, I couldn't help wondering if perhaps you and my Rocco might have crossed paths at some time. He was in obedience and agility in his former life and he's from Richmond, VA. I thought about you when I found out.
It is possible that I may have seen Rocco at some point but I've only seen a small handful of Dobies where I train and run Candy. I went to the pictures section and saw your dogs playing in the dirt, what fun! What happened to Rocco? (I have missed a LOT) Most recently, had to format my hard drive over the weekend and I've been slowly rebuilding since, very time intensive!
20. It's been stinkin hot here lately, the dogs miss their midday jaunt at the park. I took them over just after 6pm knowing 1/2 the park would be in decent shade by then. All 3 dogs had a blast. We took a walk first then came back to hang around with the others. Jesse was trying hard to be a romeo, such a typical dirty old man he is! He also pestered a friend of mine a bit, her fault really as she was sitting down and was right at face level, good thing she loves him! Candy picked up a bad habit from a cute little Dutch Shepherd, chewing on and eating a stick! I was surprised to see how relaxed Candy got up there tonight, she had swiped someones ball, laid in the middle of several dogs on her BACK playing with the ball. Sure she does that at home but I did not expect her to do it amongst other dogs. Brittany chased Buster Brown around some then hooked up with a pit mix puppy and did her mothering routine. She walked around with the pup, used her nose and body to herd the pup away from the bigger dogs and finally laid down to do a bit of jaw wrestling with it.
21.
Carol, if that was in response to my post, I apologize (truly!) maybe I should have said "complained", but "b**** seemed to fit the situation better. If that bothers you, I will tone down. sorry, again.
Twasn't you! I had to scroll back and find your post because I did not remember anything leaping out at me. Truly it was SOME of the photos with added captions that made my eyes pop wide open. Guess I was not expecting quite the level of profanity here. If anyone wants to call me a prude, ok, I'm cool with that! :D
22. I know many have been having a bit of fun posting funny photos with added captions....here I go out on a limb. May I respectfully request that the profanity be toned down a bit? I sure hate to think of myself as a prude but must admit I was rather shocked to see it here. Dogo has been a rough place to visit lately for various reasons, emotions have ran high over different issues, I'd hate to see it stray too far from the fun, informative, and at times relaxing place it has been in the past. Just a request mind you!
23. Tsk, tsk. Have ya'll forgotten everything K has taught you? If NO ONE feeds the trolls, they will starve to death! Obviously posting just to get under someones skin, ya'll are making it SOOO easy. 8)

25. Just a few months ago my sister adopted a dog, found out he had heartworms. He has been treated and came through just fine. I presume he did not have a heavy load. She was supposed to keep him quiet, knowing her AND knowing the dog, I doubt she was 100% successful. He's a zippy little fella and thinks he's a BIG dog! Her vet told her to wait a little over a month after his heartworm treatment was done to have him neutered to be safe. Kudos to you for taking this dog in, she is one lucky girl! Hope her infestation is light and her treatment goes well.
