Gratulacje.

Crufts 2010 – Judge’s Critique

Some really lovely bitches on show & with some exciting youngsters about I think things are looking up for the breed in the UK. Round eyes & long muzzles are perhaps things to watch as that classic head quality we associate with British Basenjis wasn’t often evident. As ever, front construction is perhaps the hardest thing to get right.

VD (8,2a) Hard choice between 1 & 2, each scored in different parts. 1 Drummond s Djoser Antinous, 8 years, still retains that gorgeous outline, super neck & topline, excellent hindquarters & tailset, fine bone, really looks the part going round. Front action not his strong point but a super Basenji; 2 Cullen's Ch Akmar Amenhotep, in great form at 9 years, super head quality, in great condition, excellent neck & shoulders, has a look of class, in great condition. Scored in front movement but not quite the drive behind like 1 a great credit to the breed; 3 Hooper's Pharaohs Gold, 7 years, lovely head proportions, correct eye shape so seldom seen, fine bone, excellent type all through. Doesn't look quite as short as he did as' a younger dog, could be a touch firmer in front. JD (3,1) 1 RCC, Grayson's Ch Tokaji American Gigolo at Embeau, eyecatching impressive young man, tall & short as they should be, masculine head, good wrinkle, eye could be a shade darker. Straight front, excellent topline & hindquarters, very true on the move, in tremendous condition & superbly handled. My personal preference is for a slightly finer build all through but his many virtues can't be denied; 2 Lindop's Woodella Northern Dancer, this one does have that refinement I love to see & had he been in the same magnificent form as 1 I could have been tempted to have them the other way round. Quality slightly finer head, dark eye, correct bone, short back, OK hindquarters, not quite so true in front as 1 .When he bodies up should do very well, a lovely type. PGD (4) 1 Ellis' Tokaji American Gangster at Tenfield, handsome tri of a slightly heavier type, super topline, in hard condition, good tailset, strong hindquarters with the right angles, slightly wide in front. Masculine head, slightly strong for my taste. Eventually settled enough on the move to show an excellent side gait which comfortably won him the class; 2 Matthews' Domewood Nice 'N Naughty, very elegant brindle, super long legs, level backline which could be shorter, fine bone, chiselled head, muzzle could be shorter, good hindquarters, rather wild in front action, needs to settle on the table; 3 Hannah's Zordia's Ajani, good honest dog, another who needs to settle, good head type, slightly wide in front, short back, good general type, tail could be higher set Didn't really get going on the move, will do much better when he learns the ropes, LD (6,1) 1 Miller's Benkura Super Trouper, good square outline, shortish back, well made hindquarters, well proportioned but slightly plain head. Level topline, good tailset moved slightly close in front but scored going round; 2 Gostynska's Bubas Call Of The Wild, rangier brindle with some style, typical head, good long legs, enough substance plenty of hind angulation, perhaps even slightly too much for a Basenji. Close decision this one was truer in front, 1 was steadier going round; 3 Drummond's Djoser Khaibitu ; soberly marked boy of good type, good hindquarters, correct head type, short muzzle, straight front, a touch upright in shoulder, didn't put as much into his movement as 1 or 2. OD (8,3) 1 CC, Mesecko-Suhe's Lat/Lit/Est/Pol/Slo/Hung/Blr Ch Juma Mongo Asiaczek, what an exciting new face, tall, fine, lightly built yet stilt essentially masculine with just the right amount of substance, super head proportions, dark obliquely set eye, ears could be smaller. Super topline, tailset & hindquarters, sound both ways, fine, bone, straight front, looked super going round, his young handler made the most of, his chances; 2 Baseley's Ch Marzuku Mapenzi, ultra-typy male, has so much that shouts Basenji, top class head type, arched neck, short back. Ideal tailset, plenty of shelf, super hindquarters, straight front,. slightly steep in upper arm. Moves much more steadily now he s fully mature, just not quite the side gait of CC or RCC but close up; 3 Hardy Hallam &Webb's Ch/Am Ch Kazor's Make Way For Riley, excellent all round dog who is doing his bit for the breed, square build, super topline & hindquarters, shapely body good steady side gait, sound behind. OK head but longer in muzzle than 1 & 2, stood slightly wide in front. GCD (2) 1 Middleton's Jethard Mezzotint, 9 years, have always felt his outline is close to ideal, tall for size, fine bone, shortest of backs, good tuck-up, correct tailset, good head proportions, could have more wrinkle, not in best coat; 2 Gaskell's Memetuka Jabali, good type, attractive head with good wrinkle, in good coat. Not topline or tailset of 1, didn't get it together on the move. VB (5) 1 Bowers' Ch Domewood Uber-Unnshnesh, 7 years brindle in great condition, super outline, topline & hindquarters, the right amount of bone, reachy neck, looked the part going round; 2 Gostynska's Ir Ch Bubas Little Bird. 7 years quality bitch, delightful head & expression, well bodied, feminine, good side gait. Not so true in front as 1 now nor in such good coat; 3 Smith's Ch Maridadi Kanzi, 10 years, yet another old favourite, quality all through, long legs, fine bone, pretty head, not going so well in front now but still a lovely Basenji. PB (2) 1 BP, Drummond's Kissangani Dream Maker at Djoser; 2 Adams' Kissangani Only Dreaming, promising litter sisters, little between them & will be interesting to see how they develop, good bodies, short backs, super toplines, feminine, quality all through. The tri was slightly shorter in muzzle & a bit firmer in pastern at this stage. JB (5) 1 RCC, Allen's Ch Zordia's Wazzala, gorgeous youngster of real star quality, loved her head & expression, super chiseling & wrinkle, dark eyes small ears, crested neck, short back, strong hindquarters, fabulous side gait. Only minor details & that little extra maturity in body & steadiness on the move separated her from the CC winner, a great future beckons; 2 Hardy & Hallam's Tokaji American Beauty, excellent quality bitch, classy all through, excellent topline & hindquarters, fine bone, good side gait. Slightly less short in muzzle & back than 1; 3 Smith's Safeguard's Darling Damia, lovely tri, so elegant, longest of legs, straight front, slightly upright in shoulder. Super body, good tailset, liked her tremendously but was really playing up her handler on the move. PGB (4,1) 1 Baker's Tokaji American Dreamz of Silverbriar, top class tri of undoubted ch quality, so well put together, it all flows, sound & leggy, excellent topline & tailset, feminine head. To be critical eye shape could be a touch better. One to be really proud of, for me the pick of the litter; 2 Bradley's Woodella Northern Destiny to Emmzar, quality bitch of good general type, OK head, good wrinkle, square build, well made hindquarters. Moved rather close in front & didn't retain her topline as well as 1; 3 Smith's Aminisha Maridadi, slightly heavier type good head & wrinkle, well bodied, better in front than 2 but rather narrow behind, could be a touch shorter. LB (9,3) 1 Frost's Akmar Meritamen of Bushwacker, perhaps not the flashiest but a very good honest bitch that I'd be happy to award a CC, unusually true on the move, firm & well made all through, super shoulders & complementary hind angles, good head type, very good side gait, liked her a lot; 2 Richens' Sikilaa African Jasmine, typy tri, not in best coat & I'm not thrilled by her expression but behind the collar she's very nice, tall & short, very good side gait & rear movement; 3 Baseley's Marzuku Mwara, different type, the sweetest most feminine expression you could wish for, good wrinkle, fine bone, all quality. Not quite the strength in hindquarters or side gait of winners. OB (6,1) 1 CC & BOB, Hardy, Hallam, Kite & Gillespie's Ch/Am Ch Klassics Million Dollar Baby at Tokaji, have never seen her look better, in the most perfect condition you could wish for, 'gazelle-like grace' says it all, her side gait is as inspirational as ever & her immaculate front & feet just carried the day in the challenge, looked a picture on her fifth appearance in the big ring, what's more all four of her pups were placed highly today;! Singleton's Ch Jethard Pardon Me Boys, top class tri in a slightly more substantial mould, super topline & hindquarters, well bodied, in hard condition, well proportioned head, moved perfectly true behind, have seen her go better in front; 3 Miller's Antefaa Nakura Wood Nymph, very good bitch of a different type, slightly heavier & less feminine but beautifully made & very sound on the move typical head, firm topline. GCB (2) 1 Gaskell's Zordia's Kinyamkela, pretty feminine bitch with plenty of quality, super head, correct eye & muzzle, fine bone, would prefer a bit more angulation but on the move made the most of what she had- 2 Addis' Savannastorm Little Snap Dragon, 8 years, stockier type, well bodied, feminine head, OK ears, could have a little more length of leg.
