Mutt_Lady Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 Whenever we have guests at our house, Rory has decided that jumping up on them is the best way to say "Hello!" Now, this obviously isn't acceptable period. But because my in-laws are non-dog people, it makes matters even worse. My MIL lets out a shrill scream when Rory does it; she thinks she is going to 'eat' her. I'd say the best way to solve this problem is to ask my visitors to just turn away and ignore her behavior. Then later, only give her attention when she has all four paws on the ground. Though, I know many of you are about five times wiser than me, so I was wondering what you would do if you were in my position. Keep in mind that the guests ignoring her tactic might not work because of my MIL. It is almost impossible to keep that woman from screaming. She's a drama queen. :-? Quote
courtnek Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 if your guests are willing to cooperate, that works. if not, a small two foot leash, a stern DOWN command, and treats will fix it. when the dog jumps, you step on the leash and yell NO JUMP! standing on the leash will prevent it. then DOWN. put the dog in a down, and then treat. it takes a little time, but they will get it. 8) Quote
ObedienceGrrl Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 I'll chime in with one more tip. Make sure, if you want to verbally tell Rory to get off you, to use the command 'OFF'. OFF in my house means get off from whatever you happen to be on (chair, house, person, counter) right now. DOWN means lay down where you are standing right now. If you use DOWN to mean get off, and DOWN when you want the dog to lay down......confusion starts. Quote
