Canis erectus Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 Well, my little skunk came to visit me again last night... for the last time. When I let the dogs out last night for the final potty run they ended up skunked. :-? Usually, I know when there is something in the backyard when the girls start acting a little TOO excited to go outside. This time there was no indication, in fact the spent some time meandering around the yard until Zoey assumingly stumbled across him. A few seconds or so later a flash of white indicated China charging over, followed immediately afterward by a crashing through the under brush. As soon as I saw Zoey come out of the shadows plowing the dirt with her snout I knew what happened. Sure enough China was right there with her face in the grass a second after that. :wallbash: Yeah, so it was almost one in the morning and I had to give two dogs a bath. :-? My favorite part was when it started down-pouring just as soon as I went outside with the dog washing gear. :x Anyway, I guess they still smelled terrible after that but I wouldn't know because by that time evreything smelled like a skunk's butt. I was heart-broken at having to leave my puppies outside for the night. The morning brought further evidence of the drama unfolding. Most notabley the dead body of my little skunk and an even stronger smelling China. That's right kids, nobody learned their lesson! Apparantly the little stink machine was feeling confident and came back during the wee hours of the morning. I estimate at about three o'clock, that was when I heard Zoey frantically trying to claw her way through the sliding glass door, probably in a desperate effort to escape the backyard. Well China apparently thought that she couldn't smell any worse and had attacked and killed the skunk, but not before getting sprayed again. :-? So I bathed China twice more before having to go to work in the morning. :-? Zoey thankfully seemed to know better and by that time was back to her same old normal smell. So then I spent 10 hours at work today, came home and bathed China yet twice more. She's still got a bit of a funk about her, but now I can at least let the dogs back in the house again. Yeesh I have no desire to repeat that ever again. I will miss my skunk though... Quote
imported_Irena Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 it is kind of funny we you think about it  Quote

behle Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 Poor little skunk. :( China exacted her revenge! She must be very tenacious. Here's a question, if another skunk moves in, will she do it again? Sorry about your ordeal. :o Quote
pyrless Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 oy! here's what works-Nature's Miracle skunk stuff. Quote
felicia Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 awww, iv'e always thought skunks looked cute, never seen (or smelt for that matter) one in real life, what do they smell like exactly? felicia Quote
pyrless Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 Yeah, it's a sharp, musky metallic smell. ??? Hard to describe. When you know it, you KNOW IT!!! Quote

Oh I'm sure she'd do it again given the opportunity, China can be dumb as a carp sometimes. Thankfully skunk smell doesn't bother me much at all, I've smelled plenty worse. The worst part was all the scrubbing involved, in the rain during the wee hours, fresh out of bed after four hours sleep, and again right after a 10 hour day. Huskies are not easy to clean and I was beat. That, and leaving my poor puppies outside all night long, that really felt horrible. I have a pretty good de-skunk recipe consisting of dish soap, lemon juice, baking soda, and vinegar. I also picked up some tearless commercial stuff from work called Skunk-Off to do her face, but it was a bit less effective. Quote
courtnek Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 kind of a combination of musk oil (like musky perfume) gasoline, and burning motor oil (thats the metallic part). thats about as close as I can get.... mine got all hyper a few weeks ago at 4:00 a.m. to go out....and since Jarv got skunked, TWICE, I am always on the lookout. I flashlighted the yard, nothing was there, so I let them out. (the last skunk was so bold it walked right up to the door and stood there!) around 7:00 a.m. the lovely scent of skunk came wafting through the window. it had been hit by a car. does anyone remember the song "Dead Skunk in the Middle Of The Road"? I had that stupid song stuck in my head for hours after that... :drinking: Quote
Ash Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 Theres a zillion skunks here, I'll send you some.. Whoever asked what they smelled like. lol. They smell horrific like the worst thing in the world. Try Getting a large spray bottle and poor mainly water in there with a little bit of vanilla extract, and spray it on the dogs. It's the best thing that has worked on my dog after the baths. If yah want.. It makes the smell go away a lot faster! Quote
Canis erectus Posted July 17, 2005 Author Posted July 17, 2005 Guess what I just got done doing................. Yep, I was de-skunking China!!! Again!!! :D YAY!!! :D I guess it was partly my fault in a way... sort of... No it wasn't, that skunk had no buisness being in my backyard! Rrrr, what happened was that I left the back door open so that the dogs could hang out outside because the house was pretty hot after my err in judment when I decided to turn the AC off a bit too early. So anyway, here I was scooting around on the computer when I heard Zoey on the back porch barking at something. That didn't register entirely until I heard China behind me charging from the bedroom and out the back door. Uh oh. I was hoping it was a cat, but somewhere deep down in my heart, in the sadistic, sarcastic world that I live in , I knew better than that. And sure enough, back came China with her nose in the dirt. Thankfully Zoey was brigt enough to just stay on porch where she was (my puppy is the smart one), this time she will be staying inside for the night while China camps out in the backyard. Being a hound, one might pick Zoey to be the one skunked again, oh no leave it up to the survival instincts of a husky. Speaking of which, I just looked out the back door to check on her and noticed her doing something at the back part of the yard. I better go see... :-? Quote
behle Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 :o  Well, I guess that answers my question!  Life can be cruel, can't it? 8) Do you have a whole colony of the little beasties? My sympathies. (Good girl, Zoey!) Quote
Canis erectus Posted July 17, 2005 Author Posted July 17, 2005 Poor dog my @ss, she deserved what she got. I swear she's got bricks for brains, it's only been 5 days since the last time. Oh well, in the light of morning things don't look so bad. China at least smells decent enough to come in the house, and there's nothing dead out in the yard. Quote
courtnek Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 it must be a snow dog thing...Jarvis was part malamute, and HE never learned either..... 8) Quote
