jessieholsinger Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Okay, so it is 2:14 am and I have been awake since about 1:30 am- Stealth woke me up with him hacking. He normally chews a rawhide just before bedtime. He is now licking the floor and coughing and just threw up a pile of rawhides and some other nasty liquid. I took him out side because he went straight to the door and he ate alot of grass. What is wrong? Should he not have anymore rawhides? After a little while he stopped the hacking but now all he wants is the grass. Please help! I am so worried about him. Jessie Quote

They really shouldn't be allowed but people are pulled in by marketing ploys when the hides are in the form of shoes and bones and baseballs etc. They damage the dogs intestinal lining and swell in the dogs gut causing bloat and they can cause gastro-torsion. Additionally they have a link to causing cancer. Just give him something like chicken and rice for today with small quantities of water little and often to settle his tummy. Quote

I heard once not to give him the big rawhides and that smaller ones are better....But unfortunately for Stealth he will not be getting them any longer. What are the nylabones? courtnek Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 I give mine rawhide, but only when I'm here to supervise. they can cause stomach and choking problems, but my dogs have always been large and never had issues. I dont believe they are the best for small dogs.. nylabone is a bone thats pretty mucn indestructible....you have to watch the chewing there too. when the knobby ends are broken or chewed off its time to get another one. 8) Quote

AllAmericanPUP Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 if you want to give rawhides...it's best to give PRESSED rawhide, and ones that are made in America. the cheap ones that are made in other countries are the ones that have cancer causing preservatives. my dogs get pressed rawhides whenever we go to petsmart. nylabones are good if you have a dog that really likes to chew....my dogs werent too impressed with the nylabone :lol:....i'm not even sure where it is now cause they never touched it.... felicia Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 we usually get our rawhide from a couple who make it themselves for their dogs, they make homemade dog treats like kangaroo, donkey, beef and camel jerkey, they also make awesome dog biscuits and dried liver very cheap, nassa absolutely loves the jerky and dried liver :D i just got a food dehydrator so i'm thinking of making some dried liver and jerky for her myself, should be able to get some roo meat soon, does anyone know the best way to flavour jerky for dogs and has anyone ever done this themselves? i'm going to ask how they treat the rawhide next time i see them. felicia Quote

He actually slept on my stomach and his head on my chest...I guess a comfort issue. He is about 1 year and 3 months and a 85 lb dog. He still thinks that he is a pup though. I know that he does really good with the big bags of rawhides and and squared/rectangle shapped ones but the one that the threw up was from a medium size bone shapped...I am not sure how he did it. I gave him one of the rawhides that he does well with last night but i noticed that it was in the very back of his mouth but no problems- is that normal? I could not reach it to pull it out but 15 min later i guess he either spit it out or swallowed it....... Also, do you guys know what I should bring on a vacation for him? as far as toys...we are renting a condo. Let me know! I know the main thing is his kennel!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to get him in the ocean a little bit- we will be in the panhandle of florida....... Jessie Quote
