DogPaddle Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 I went out in the yard to give it a quick spray down and decided to give the boys a good bath. The outdoor hose has warm water if I want and has better coat penatrating power than the shower. Did Kavik in about 15 min, probably less. The rest of the time I spent on Zaphod - rinse Zaphod - run hand over coat - wash completely covered hand off - repeat - like 30-40 times - give up as hair is coming off just as fast as when I started - finish washing - start brushing - fill grocery bag with fur - switch brushes - arm gets tired - give up In total I spent 1 hour and 45 min. 20 min on Kavik with brushing, 15 min on the yard and 1 hour and 10 min an Zaphod - most of that time spent defurring him! :o Quote
ESSlover Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 :o Eeesh!!! We do that with the cats and make a huuuuge fur ball and throw it out. Shedding is nasty. Quote
gooeydog Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 A little tip that you may find helps in the defurring process, I do this with all our dogs, but especially the long haired ones. When you go to rinse the shampoo off, take a brush (for the non-smoothcoats, I use a slicker brush, for the smoothcoats, one of those rubber grooming mitts), and brush along with the water flowing to rinse. With each stroke, flip the brush up a bit at the end, so that any hair you've collected gets flicked out, and do the whole dog like that, concentrating on heavily coated areas. I get about a baseball sized clump of solid fur out of Casey (cocker) when I do this during shedding season, and even the shorter coated dogs release a good bit of fur. Quote
Sharpeigirl Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 I know it's shedding season, I just brushed the Shepherd & my dog there's still clumps comeing off in fist fulls!! My yard looks like I sheared a large sheep.. And now Sassy is blowing her coat in the house!! Hair Hair everywhere!! Quote
DogPaddle Posted May 21, 2005 Author Posted May 21, 2005 Goo - That is sort of what I do only I use my hand and my method isn't as efficient. I point the hose, loosen the fur, run hand across, rinse at the end of the stroke. I keep meening to get one of those rubber comb things. I wouldn't have thought it would work as well on longer haired dogs but its good to know. SPG - You might want to try brushing them while their wet. Keeps the fur from going everywhere. Quote
Canis erectus Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 Yup, it is that time. Thank god for me that China finished blowing her coat a couple weeks ago. I can usaully fill up a grocery bag at least once a week or so just with normal shedding, but when she blows coat it's crazy. We always like to joke every spring about evrey bird in a six block radius having luxury padded nests. Anyway, I use a rake if I'm giving China a bath, it seems to be the thing that works best for her. Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 most of that time spent defurring him! :o the dead fur had to come out best straight out and into a bag than allover the house Quote

DogPaddle Posted May 21, 2005 Author Posted May 21, 2005 True enough Mouse. I am a dog person and I don't mind a bit of dog fur, a few dog nose prints around the house, stepping on dog toys etc but I really don't like dogfurballs rolling through the house like tumbleweed. Quote

It was sooooo gross, I HATE wet dog hair on me it's soo gross! The only thing I like about brushing him when he is wet is that the hair dosn't fly all over the place but clumps up. I must have gotten at least a big bag full of hair, but it was worth all the work because Zeb looks great now! I even trimed his fur for summer, so now he has a cool new "summer" do. Quote
Cairn6 Posted May 22, 2005 Posted May 22, 2005 I had no idea about how bad the shedding can get until we got Shadow. Toto my cairn never really shed and Mandy doesn't either. The dog before was a terrier and a poodle if any hair ever came off it was in little clumps. Same time we had Brandy we had a terrier/black lab who never really shed. Quote
Crystal Posted May 22, 2005 Posted May 22, 2005 Shedding is awful. I've seen my inlaws dog shed and I feel horrible for him, GSD and husky mix. They brush and brush and it seems to come out endlessly. The thing about Toby is that his hair isn't extremly short, but not long either. It's a long kinda short, I wouldn't even call it medium. Anyway, It gets in everything and sticks stragith through clothing. It is sharp and pokes the crap out of you if it gets in your clothes. It is almost impossible to get out too. So if I hate his shedding that much I feel very bad for those of you with long haired dogs. Quote
