ESSlover Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 UGH! Carson has been a stubborn little brat lately. My question is, how do you train a dog that is motivated by nothing? Food treats dont get to him, SOCKS! dont get to him, nothing! At the moment, he thinks that "sit" means for him to lay down, roll over on his back, and get a belly rub. And this stubborn little dude will NOT get back up! I have to puuuuuuuuull him back up into sitting position, from thence he lays down again, and repeats the process.... :x :confused1: Quote
DogPaddle Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 Is there any game or activity, aside from belly rubs, that he likes? Quote
ESSlover Posted May 19, 2005 Author Posted May 19, 2005 He likes having play bite wars with my dad.. but that isnt really good since he'll bite so hard it makes him bleed. :o Quote
pyrless Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 exercise? a good retrieve? a bird to flush? Quote
ESSlover Posted May 19, 2005 Author Posted May 19, 2005 He'd LOVE to be a hunting dog.. He would run for hours on end if he could, he's a feild bred springer. We want to be able to let him run off-lead at the park, but he wont pay attention so we can make sure that his recall is perfect. Stubborn little brat... He doesnt get the point of retrieving things... unless they're alive, or were once alive, that is! Quote
pyrless Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 hee hee!!!! i used to motivate sasha by just letting her out in the yard if she did a command right, it's her favorite place to be! Quote
DogPaddle Posted May 20, 2005 Posted May 20, 2005 He sounds like a handful. Short of going to obed. class you could try artificially installing some desire for a toy in him so you could later use it as a reward for training. Some police forces do this with their dogs. They crate one dog and then play with another dog in a yard with a favoured toy. Over time the crated dog begins to associate the toy with a higher place in the pack and good attention etc. Then they use it for training reward later. You would need another dog - one who liked toys. Quote
Canis erectus Posted May 20, 2005 Posted May 20, 2005 That sounds like a great idea DP, I think that might be worth looking into myself if I can find a third dog. It's alot better than what I had to suggest: Repetition, repetition, repetition... Quote
rotten_two Posted May 20, 2005 Posted May 20, 2005 hullo did you ever order the rabbit scent? it's only gonna take a small bit on a toy for carson to go gaga! tell your dad i said to order it (or else)! he doesn't want me to come over there! play bite with carson is not appropriate play right now btw! Guest Anonymous Posted May 20, 2005 Posted May 20, 2005 What about just giving him some major lovin'?!! If he does what you ask, tell him good boy and give him hugs and kisses and pet him down talking baby talk to him the entire time. I know it sounds kinda funny but I had a friend with a mutt who didnt care about material possesions (hehe) but if she showed him some lovin he got so happy. He'll do just about everything she tells him to. Quote

DogPaddle Posted May 20, 2005 Posted May 20, 2005 CE - I saw it on tv. The were actually working with an already trained scent dog who was bananas for the reward toy. The little GSD in the crate watching was really getting worked up. As soon as they let him out of the crate he went straight for the toy. Good luck ESS. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 Sounds like Kiani, she doesn't really like any treats I buy her, and I guess eats them out of boredom, when she's at home. I buy her rawhide treats, bones, greenies, and only occasionally will she start knawing on it. I bought her a 10" rawhide roll, she's eaten about 2" of it since I bought a few weeks ago. But she loves attention, and all the lovin she can get. But she still doesn't listen to me when she's excited and happy. Quote
