Sharpeigirl Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 Sassy has to eat a special diet I get from the vets office, the only thing is she won't eat it. I asked the vet if I could mix some of her old food with it, and she told me no, she needs to eat the Stuff they gave me. I can put everything under the sun on it to try to get her to eat, but she just turns her nose up at it. And she'll sneak what Zeus leaves behind before I can get it picked up.. Is there anything I can feed her with the Hills C/D Dry? I'm afraid she's going to start loseing alot of weight if she doesn't start to eat regularly. She has already droped from 70 to 65lbs. Monday we'll see if she's droped anymore. It's getting frustrateing to have to deal with UTI's every other month, and sometimes more the once a month. We had her bladder x-rayed & her urine clutured & it showed nothing.. I don't know if the vet is stringing me along, and not telling me why she's haveing this problem so offten. I've thought about getting a second opinion. Quote
DogPaddle Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 Not all prescription diets are equal. If you must use a prescription diet you should know that Hill's isn't the only company who makes them (although they do seem to have most the vets in their pocket.) Many people I've talked to who have to give their pets Hill's prescrip diets compalin that the animal won't eat it and I've never been fond of their ingredients but I'm not sure how the prescrip requirements affect ingreds. Anyway maybe you could see about a different companies prescrip diet: Wysong Quote
JackieMaya Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 If I were you, I would ask my vet if there is another prescription food I could give my dog. Or is there a "recipe" he can give you so that you could mix up your own? Quote
DogPaddle Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 Royal Canin also makes a prescription diet I think. You would probably have to look them up online and call them for more info. My mum's vet gave her a recipe for cooked regular food (not kibble) for her dog when she wouldn't eat Hill's or Medical or something. Quote
Sharpeigirl Posted May 5, 2005 Author Posted May 5, 2005 Well my vet is being a pain. She said she didn't know of any other foods off hand :o I'm so close to changeing my vet.. I'll try to find a place in KC that carries WYSONG. The natural diet thing might be alot better for her.. since she does love chicken, turkey, fish & beef when we eat it.. Quote
DogPaddle Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 Contact Wysong directly - maybe they can help, I'm sure they'd like to expand their distribution or can refer you to a vet that provides their prescrip diet. Quote
Sharpeigirl Posted May 5, 2005 Author Posted May 5, 2005 This is very frusterateing. The only place thats close to me that sells Wysong is 35miles away :o I'm going to be looking into a natural diet soulution.. Quote
DogPaddle Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 Natural diets can be fun. I still cook more for my dogs than for me. I just do it for general health though, not for a purpose so unfortunately I don't know of any recipes for UTI. I would suspect you have to start with knowing whether Sassy's problem is due to low or high acidity. TDG might know more, you could pm her. Quote
Sharpeigirl Posted May 5, 2005 Author Posted May 5, 2005 she has low PH. She's always getting struvite crystal's in her urine. So I need to find something that will stop it. Quote

I don't think 35 miles is that far. If they have what you want, you might as well drive over there and get it, as it sounds like they're the only ones in your area. Quote
Sharpeigirl Posted May 5, 2005 Author Posted May 5, 2005 Well I limited acess to transportation. But I did find a natural recipe so I might try that. I'll keep trying.. 1.5 lb of cooked ground chuck beef, with the fat retained, 1/4 lb of cooked calf Quote
JackieMaya Posted May 6, 2005 Posted May 6, 2005 Have you checked with that place that sells the Wysong to see if you can have it delivered? That might be a possibility if you don't have transportation to get there. Good luck! Quote
DogPaddle Posted May 6, 2005 Posted May 6, 2005 Tums huh? They come in flavours, you could add differnet flavours to the meal that way. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted May 6, 2005 Posted May 6, 2005 I'm in the same boat as you. Kiani went in for her second UTI testing. And her PH was low also. We're hitting it this time with a 3 week prescription. I wish I had asked about any crystals, but it slipped my mind. And it wasn't the vet I originally saw, it was a new intern girl, who seems really nice too. But the vet comes highly recommended, so I'm going to trust thier word. Kiani's also a picky eater, and since I don't have a job right now, she's having to eat the cheap stuff. And I sure can't afford hill's at 50$ a bag. If I had all the money in the world I'd get her a more all natural diet with fewer by-products and meal in it. I don't think I'd have the time to cook every meal for her though. And I understand driving far, but I get to do it every day, a good 20 miles every day, if not more. We go through a full tank of gas in about 5 days. But occasionally I do take the bus and that does save on gas, but not time. BTW, there's several new over the phone/net presciption and pet meds pharmacies popping up. Maybe one of those sell presciption foods, and delievers for cheap. And according to my vet, hill's is 100% money back guarentee if the dog doesn't like it. So either press them to take the food back, or call hill's up. It's an awful lot of money to throw away if she's not going to eat it. Quote
