It's me. He will only go out when someone else goes out with us. Like today my mom went out with us and he was fine but the second that my mom went into the house he freaked out and wouldn't move away from the door. I thought I could fix it but how do I fix him from being afraid when I'm the problem? I've tried this with everyone in the house over the last few days. When my brother comes with us. Fine. When my dad comes with us. Fine. When my mom comes with us. Fine. Me alone. Freaks out. I such a horrible doggy mom, my own dog is scared to be alone with me. I know this is all my fault somehow but I don't know how to fix it now.

Hey, that sounds like really good advice! 8)

SF, can you think of anything that might make him feel this way? I mean, dogs perceive things in some pretty weird ways sometimes. Perhaps there was an incidence where you were angry about something totally unrelated to him and he picked up on it at exactly the wrong time? I'm just grasping for straws here, so if some of this sounds inane, just bear with me.

A bug flying around your head causing you to react "violently" (swatting and swinging)?

A passerby that caused you to yell out?

Something on the ground that made you stomp at it?

Out together when the weather turned really bad?

Out together when some strange/loud/sudden noise happened (thunder, gunshot, backfiring car, loud boom boom music too close)?

I'm just stretching here...

In the meantime, I like Dobe's advice. Perhaps stop making too big a deal of it and let it "just happen" by making it his choice, but making it hard to choose otherwise.

Good luck. I'm sure he'll eventually overcome this.

Your not a bad doggie Mommy, or you wouldn't care if went out or didn't. He will come around, something must have spooked him when it was just you and him, I agree with the others, don't make a big deal about it he can probably sense your anquish....

HF you hit it right on the head. :( I was angry one day, at my mom for some reason or another and I took zeb out. He got scared of a car or a truck and started to run back inside and in my frustration I yelled at him very meanly which only caused him to be more frightened. After that things just got worse and now he hates outside. I guess he figures that being with me alone I will yell at him again, and when someone else comes out he is "Safe". I did something totally stupid and now my dog dosn't trust me. I can't even begin to describe how angry at myself I am for being so stupid and yelling at him, I feel like shit. :(

I also like what Dobe suggested. In fact, that's what lots of people will do with horses to get them to accept you. Just hang out with them, not approaching them, but waiting for them to come up to you.

You're NOT a bad doggie mom! Everyone one of us at one time or another has yelled at our dog, or at someone, with a stern or angry voice. Zeb just happened to pick up on it and it stuck with him. He'll come around. Give him time to figure out that it wasn't a big deal.

Food!
(you are not a bad mom by the way).
Get him to associate you with food (the prize stuff-cheese, peanut butter, baloney, whatever) or his favorite toy stuffed with food, or the food bowl, etc.
And don't worry about the yelling too much, I have done that, we all have, I have posted on it before too as I can't believe what an idiot I am sometimes.
Also, try always coming towards him or letting him out with a really happy singsongy voice.
HTH, good luck to you!

pyrless: don't you know the oscar mayer song...
My Bologna has a first name, It's O-S-C-A-R.
My bologna has a second name, It's M-A-Y-E-R.
Oh I love to eat it everyday,
And if you ask me why say,
Cause' Oscar Mayer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A

Sorry I couldn't help but think of it when I saw you spelt it wrong. It's one of those funny words like Colonel. Now can you tell me where the "r" is??

starfox: are you the one that feeds him every day and do daily chores for him every day??
I dunno, but Kiani knows I'm the ones that feeds her and I'm the one that gives her water, and I'm the one that takes her out every day, and I'm the one to do all for her. Kari just gives her the occasional play time, and will only feed her if I ask her to. So in return Kiani will listen to every word I say, even if Kari tells her the exact same thing a hundred times before I open my mouth.
Although I have given Kiani a fear. I tossed her in the lake once (and she hates water). So now she won't even go near it to get a drink at least at that spot. She'll go near it at other spots. But what I have to do now is drag her over and cup the water in my hand and let her drink from my hand at the same spot. Hopefully she'll trust me again to not throw her in the water.
I took moogle once last summer to the beach to go swimming, and it was really fun. She didn't like being too far out so we'd swim with her out, and then watch her swim back to shore to Kari's friend. She also wasn't too sure of the waves. Even though it was a calm day. But this summer I want to take Kiani swimming at the beach. I guess I'll have to take her swimming at Kari's parents house first, but she hates that too cause we tossed her in to give her a bath. She hates the hose too, so it was a quick easy step to get her wet.
She'll stand with her tail down and the saddest look on her face, and won't give me any kisses while she's getting bathed. But once she's dry, she'll be happy. I guess it's cause she has a long coat, but it dries extremly fast.
