Okay, Zeus stays outside at night.. and he has a large dog house, and a warm shed to get in out of the weather.. Well last night we had a bit of rain, and he usually is quiet and goes into one or the other to get dry. Well not last night, he sat out in the rain & howled.. I have no idea why! He has 2 warm & Dry places to go, yet he still howled all night!! I couldn't bring him in, we don't have a basement or Garage to let him in. He was coated in mud, and he's just so rough with Sassy.. I don't know what to do with him, not sure I can handle another night of howling..

Smokie is always spooked by rain, and especially by thunder.. ugh, you should see him shake, on second thought, no you shouldn't. And I mean in the house he's spooked, lol.

Why do the dogs not sleep inside? Maybe there was another animal out there, a c@t or skunk or something? Not sure, but hope it gets better for you.

See about getting a used crate. Crate Zeus in it, probably in the same room Sassy sleeps in. Sassy is safe, Zeus is inside and warm, you get to sleep through the night  and used crates usually aren't too costly.

We used to have a crate for him, and he got a little large for it & the next size up is an arm & a leg :o ANd I'd like to say it's not my idea to leave him out at night, I can't go against my family :x It's frustrateing.

My friend leaves her dog out at night and when it rains she opens the heated laundry room for her and the dog also has a dog house. Well sometimes when it rains the dog will just sit in the rain and shiver like it's cold. My friend tries everything to get her into the warm laundry room but the dumb dog just refuses.

..So yeah I really have no advice just thought I would tell you that your dog isn't the only one.

That's just like Zeus, just sit there & look stupid.. Funny thing is, when it's dry & fairly nice he'll go in, but crappy weather, no he'd rather stand out looking dumb, and driving me nuts

I was just wonder (not an attack or anything) what the difference is leaving a dog inside at night? I mean if the dogs inside during the day, why not the night? :-? It doesn't make sense to me.

Maybe Zeus was lonely?

Hi all, my dogs are outside dogs most of the time but I let them in in the evening to watch a bit of tv with me. Then I put them out again at night. While I'm at work they also stay outside.
They've been doing this since they were pups and are used to it and wouldn't have it any other way. We don't get snow here in WA so our winters are comparitively mild compared to europe and usa.
My old girl (lab cross) would rather sleep on the back step in the cold than in her kennel or in the garden shed where it's warm and cosy.
She'd look at me through the door looking all sad but on the few times when I felt sorry for her and brought her inside she'd just want to get back out again.
I found the only way I could get her to like going in her crate was to stuff the kennel jampacked full of straw and let her burrow into it.
Now in winter she burrows into the straw and never gets cold but in summer she still sleeps on the back step.
My other dog sleeps anywhere he wants to, including my lab cross's kennel.

Toby stays in the house almost always. I do put him out in the front yard when its nice out. He loves his crate so I usually put it out there with him. Most of the time he lays in it with his head sticking out asn just looks around. Sometimes he will run and play, but he prefers to be inside.

McKenzie was another story entirely. She was not good at being inside. She destroyed anything that wasn't glued to the ceiling. She hated to be in the house. Except when she had the pups, then she wanted to be with them. We could hardly get her to leave them to pee.

I guess some dogs prefer different living arrangements.

I think it is better to keep them inside, but if they don't like it that way what do ya do?

I know my opinion isn't going to be popular but I don't know why people get dogs if they're just going to chain them outside to a dog house......
What's the point ?? :-?
Dogs are pack animals and like to be with their humans, at least mine do.

I know some people give the old excuse that the dog is a guard dog....but how much can he guard if he's chained up ???
I'd rather have my protection in the house with me than chained up in a back yard.

Debbie, Zeus isn't chained out, he has a choice to come in if he wanted to, but he doesn't like being inside at night.. he gets restless & hot! So he like being outside.. And my grandparents are ones to say a big dog should be outside.. And god knows I can't go against them or I'll pay hell for it

Oh Debbie I love you. I always hate it when people say it's a guard dog. yeah like someone is gonna be scared off by that nutty dog barking his head off at the end of a chain. I'd be more scared of a ferret running loose in the house.

That actually is the exact reason I wanted Toby. Sometimes my husband has to go on trips for a night or two. I can't sleep when he is not here. Every little noise freaks me out. I begged him for a dog. I said that way when you are gone the dog can sleep in the crate beside the bed.(yeah, we all know he'd be in the bed  ) So if I get scared or think someone is outside I can let him out of the crate and he can scare em off!

I know that one always makes me roll my eyes too..........
How much protection can they be when your home is being invaded while their chained up in the back yard.
There are statistics that show a burglar is going to pass up a home with a barking dog inside rather than a home without a dog.....only because they don't want the bother.

S.G, it's too bad your grandparents are of the ilk that dogs belong outside, big or small it doesn't matter.
I still stand by my opinion that people shouldn't bother having them if they're kept outside. I'm talking pets here, not working dogs......
