StarFox Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 Yesturday my mom and I took Zebra to Petsmart to get some hay for the rabbit and to shop around. Well there was this old woman and her very old mother there. The oldest woman was in a wheelchair and had a patch over her eye and her daughter was pushing the wheelchair. They saw Zebra and said "Oh how cute! Can we pet him?" . I said sure and they started to come over. Well Zebra has never seen a wheelchair before and got scared. He was whimpering and trying to back away. The two old women said they were sorry that they scared him but I told them it was ok, he just wasn't use to seeing a wheelchair and that he was fine. The oldest woman insted that he was scared of her eye patch and she looked so upset that Zebra was afraid of her. :( I assured her that it was the wheelchair that he was afraid of and told her that he was afraid of things with wheels (bicycles, skateboards, shopping carts, etc). She even put her hand over her eye so he wouldn't be so scared. Finally Zeb got the courage to go up to them and started to lick there hands. The women were both so happy and kept saying that he was a sweet dog. I just felt so embarassed and bad that Zeb would act like that and be so afriad. I felt so bad for the oldest woman because she thought it was her eye that scared him. Odd thing is that when Zeb saw them in the checkout he kept trying to go over to see them, like he was saying "Wait I know them! Lets go see them again!" Quote
JackieMaya Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 The owner of the stable I used to board my horses at had a lab who had to have a leg amputated due to bone cancer. The dog could run just as fast on three legs as he could on four, and he didn't know he had a problem. But one day the dog came into the barn and one of the horses just freaked out when she saw a three-legged dog come into the barn, as if he was a creature from outer space. The horse's owner said it was like having a little kid pointing at someone in a wheelchair. Some animals accept odd things differently than others do. You shouldn't feel embarrassed or bad because of how Zebra acted. It sounds like the ladies understood dogs and how they can be afraid of different things. And it sounds like Zebra got over it too. Crystal Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 Hey thats a lot better than how a kid would handle it. I mean they understood the dog was scared, but when I kid screams mom look at that, or man they guy talks funny the person doesn't seem to so much understand. My 6 year old embarresses me all the time. Atleast dogs just kinda back away and can't say something to really make you look like a jerk. Sounds like everything worked out ok Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 Try not to be embarrassed by what happened. It certainly sounds like the ladies understood. Like JackieMaya said, animals have problems with different things. I don't know how my dogs would react to a wheelchair. Sounds like Zebra handled himself very well. Quote
CincoandDahlilasgirl Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 Sounds like he handled it well in the end. Every1 including people are afraid of something at 1st. Dahlila was afraid of the sound the dishwasher made when she was a puppy. Cinco is just getting used to the vaccum cleaner everyonce in awhile he bolts down the hall when we start it up. Quote
courtnek Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 Free was afraid of Kyle's wheelchair when he broke his leg, and she hates the vacuum cleaner and will attack it whenever she see's it. dont worry, dogs react differently to certain things as was said. besides, Zeb go over his fear fairly quickly. thats a good sign. 8) Quote
CincoandDahlilasgirl Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 Starfox ur gonna probably think this is crazy but i saw a dog that looks exactly like the 1 in ur siggi! :o at the volunteer orientation if they ever post his pic I'll show u. Quote
imported_Kat Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 Star, it sounds as if Zebra plucked up the courage to try and handle the situation. Just some puppers are a little freaked by oddities. I know though how you could feel bad for the lady though but hey maybe you will see them again and Zebra will be less sensitive  Quote
Yoladybug Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 I'm sure Abby would have done the same thing. She hates wheels too...esp. skateboards. If we're outside and someone goes by on a skateboard, the poor thing crouches down and sprints back toward the house, as low to the ground as she can get. Quote
StarFox Posted February 28, 2005 Author Posted February 28, 2005 I did feel like a mom who's child said something embarassing. I'm just glad he got over it quickly. Cinco-Nope I don't think your crazy. I hope they post a pic of the dog at the shelter. I love the dog in my siggy he is such a good boy, he has been at the shelter forever! He's a hyper boy and needs someone that will pay allot of attention to him and buy him lots of squeeky toys. He managed to destroy 4 squeeky toys in under 30 mins when I took him out the other day.  Yoladybug-I think our dogs might be related. If Zeb sees a bicycle or something his butt will get real low to the grownd and he will run as fast as possible to the house. Quote
CincoandDahlilasgirl Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 Well I'm going into volunteer tomorrow so if he's still there and I have my camera I'll see if my mom can take him out so I can snap a few pics. Quote
