What breeds or mixes would you guys suggest for a family with two kids, ages 6 and 1 1/2? and what breeds would you say were not good with children...I already know how bouncy boxers are, will knock little kids over! I was thinking lab...or retriver...any suggestions?

Instead of intentionally attempting to mess with genetics of a breed that you are unlikely to find common in america, and adding to the escalating problem of unwanted puppies, I suggest you go to your local shelter and observe some dogs there.

My husband wants a large dog. and the lab was gone when I called... I have plenty of time to devote to a dog...I am a stay at home mom. So I will be able to spend lots of time training, playing, and loving my new dog. Before I got married we had dogs that were not very trained. It made life complicated. So after we got married and had our first dog, I made sure to train her. She was part boxer, very hyper, very nuts, she would knock me over, so I was afraid for her to play with our 2year old. but after a few weeks I could hollar sit when she was in a dead run for our little girl and the butt hit the ground. She was a smart dog. I hope the next one is as easily trainable!!! but like I said I do stay at home, so I might end up with the best behaved dog in the neighborhood!

just called about some husky mix pups....everybody keep your fingers crossed I really wanted a husky or husky mix. They are only 4 and 1/2 weeks old, so I wouldn't get it for a few weeks but I called anyway...I hope they call back

I work at a boarding kennel and everyone has Labs and Goldens and everyone goes on about how they are such great family pets and great with kids. I know there are a lot of qualities about both breeds that make them good family pets but all I see is rambunctious untrained big dogs jumping up and knocking kids to the ground and making them cry. It happens all the time in our office.
I can't think of a particular breed that is good with kids really.
A well trained, socialized any breed can make a perfect family pet.
I would get an adult dog from the shelter because WYSIWYG. I just rescued the perfect dog in December but you can't have him.

We decided on the husky/lab mix. I've got lots of time to train him, and I know how to stop the jumping. I had my boxer/pit mix trained not to jump and when you can train something as stubborn as she was you can train almost anything. I think as long as dogs get enough training that they will be pretty well mannered. If he is stubborn I'll get professional help.

Highly trainable, large dog, good with kids? I would really suggest looking in to a Great Dane - they are FANTASTIC dogs and are relatively low-key, gentle, intelligent & obedient.

You'd just have to spend a fortune in dog food! :)
