AllAmericanPUP Posted January 24, 2005 Posted January 24, 2005 Hey, i didnt want to PM you cause of the problems people have been having with that..so i thought i'd just ask ya here. If ya dont mind me asking anywayz.. How old are you? You just got a job as a bather at petsmart, right? what hours do you work? do you go to school? i'm just asking these cause I want to apply to be a bather at the petsmart in springfield..but i want to know if I even have a chance to get the job since I'm still in school...so i would only be able to work after school hours.. Guest Mutts4Me Posted January 24, 2005 Posted January 24, 2005 My PMs are fine, I think, but just to be safe, I'm 23, and a college graduate (English degree). I've been trying to get a job in publishing, but it's not working out well, so I stumbled across the bather job at Petsmart. SO right now my schedule is totally free, no more school. I think I'd like to stick with this at least until I go to grooming school, because it'd be nice to get a new skill out of the situation. Yes, I have been hired as a bather/brusher. I have not started that yet, so I don't know what kind of hours you could expect, just that the salon is open from opening (9-10) to 6 pm, so it'd likely be day shifts, unless you can schedule short shifts after work, or on the weekends. Right now, I've spent 4 shifts doing paperwork, watching instructional vids, and doing various activities and workbooks geared towards chashiers and other associates. I just got my first Grooming Booklet before I left today, and I've got a couple more books to go before I can actually DO anything. If you want to work at Petsmart, you could even try to get a job doing something else. You go through all the same initial training. Then, once you graduate, you could ask to be transeref into the Salon once a spot opened up. They offer jobs inside befopre going outside. Plus that might even give you time to go through all the grooming books and such before you actually became a bather. Quote
ObedienceGrrl Posted January 24, 2005 Posted January 24, 2005 Hey AAP....I know you didn't ask for my opinion....but I have a big mouth so I'll give it to you anyway! Mutts is right....you could start off as a cashier or in small animal and let them know where your interest lies. There were transfers always going on when I worked there. Plus, we did have a lot of highschool students that did come in after school only and on weekends. They are pretty good with working with someone's schedule if they need to fill a position. Most of their day time people don't want to work on a weekend. So they are usually trying to fill those spots.....as long as you do'nt mind losing your weekend, then it's all good! Quote
AllAmericanPUP Posted January 24, 2005 Author Posted January 24, 2005 Thanx :D I guess i'll go apply to be a cashier or something. There are noooo jobs here except for fast food and i REALLY dont want to work in fast food!! and when working with pets(even just being a cashier at petsmart where i get to see lots of pets) is what makes me happy...and there aren't any groomer shops in my town and none of the vets need any help :( and if i dont get a job i won't be able to go on this trip in the summer that I want to go on..so I MUST get a job!! the petsmart is about 40 minutes from me..but it wont hurt to try..i'm also gonna apply to petco.. wish me luck :D Quote

I'll put down on my ap that I want to be a cashier or bather..we'll see... I'm also thinking of putting a wanted ad in the paper that says I am looking for a afterschool job working with animals, do you think that's a good idea? thanx! :) Quote
Guest Mutts4Me Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 You could try putting an ad in, I don't have any experience with self-promotion, lol. Just be careful of jobs that sound too good. I called on an ad in another city. The description said "Must LOVE animals" and paid up to 14.52, so I thought I'd give it a shot, might be worth the drive. Yeah, they started going on about the requirements, and it was a research facility!!! They didn't say that at any time. Started of nicely, with preparing special diets, monitoring the animals, cleaning, etc. Then it started to take a turn for the worse and a "willingness and ability to euthanize..." was thrown in, and I was like, "So this is an animal research lab???" Yes. Umm, nevermind. Ugh. Anyway, go for any job Petsmart or Petco has open (my Petco doesn't have a Salon, but many newer ones do) and let them know what your ultimate goal is. I'm sure you'll be able to get in the Salon fairly quickly. Quote
Guest Mutts4Me Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 I have to amend a previous statement. On some days, the salon stays open until closing at 9 p.m.; other days 7 p.m., and 6p.m. on Sundays. So there is a possibility of a high school student doing after school and weekend work in the salon. Quote
