Out walking the other evening a dog started following us, he was dragging about 6 feet of chain link behind him, no tag just chain link around his neck too, skinny, friendly but he was scaring Buddy so at first I chased him away. On the way back find same dog surrounded by a small group of teenagers, he is trying to follow them home too (one had a dog), no one knew what to do, it was dark by then. Finally I enlisted a couple of the teens to help me get the dog home and into my yard where he stayed the night (it was unseasonably warm, above 40.)

At 7 am and again at 9 I canvassed the neighborhood where he was found, asking anyone I saw if they knew him, no luck. Also called the papers to see if anyone had reported a missing dog, finally checked the Humane Society and then the pound, no luck. HS wouldn't take him (though I would have paid the $30 relinquishment fee) and I ended up taking him to the pound. There was no way I could have kept him any longer.

Did I do the right thing or not? Part of me thinks I should have just unhooked the chain he was dragging and let him remain loose when I found him (between me and the teens we would have had to chase him away to prevent following across heavy traffic); thinking that maybe he could have found his way home but now because of me he may be PTS.

Thanks, those were part of my thoughts too. Also when I got him to the pound they said he was intact, so he could have potentially been making unwanted puppies if left to roam. Still I feel awful somehow.

Right :)

How stupid I felt, at first, a couple months ago. Found a skinny pup walking the road, and we brought her in, crated her for the night in my living room. Called the HS and Animal Control, no reports. Put a Found ad in the paper. Then I walked her down the road, and a guy a few houses down and across the street claimed her! I felt so silly...

But he wasn't home the day before. So if I had just let her roam, she could've wandered into the busy road that mine runs into, or she could've been lost. Frankly, I live in a high crime-rate city with a lot of dogfighting activity, so she could've been picked up as bait or for other torture. So I did good by her.

Of course, I wish I hadn't found her owner and that I'd have just taken her straight to the HS, because her owner was an idiot and the pup has since disappeared. A shame, as she was so beautiful and would've beena great dog with some training. But that's an entirely different story. Kind of. Maybe a good person will get the dog from the pound :)

They wouldn't take him??? Sounds like the 1 by me(partly rude volunteers and even the HS we got Cinco agrees with that) neways when i was there looking at dogs a family came in to surrender a dog (som1 was sick i think) so they brought the dog to the HS and they wouldn't take it cuz it was a staffy or a pit it's juss like wtf? this is a HS u supposed to take any dog in need of a home un until the right people come along! u did the right thing!

You did the right thing. A few years back our two dogs got out (mixed breed terrified of storms, gunshots fireworks Broke through a fence dug under the house then through another fence unfortunatly our Rottie Jake followed Prince.) My husband came to my work and we left to try and find them. I rang the police, vets and ranger. There had been reports of the two of them out back roads. We called as many friends and family to go looking and drove around looking. My husband and myself came towards a car with its hasard lights on It was dark. As we got closer I seen my best mate Jake lying on the side of the road Iwas histerical, We had arrived within 5 minutes he had died instantly. We never found Prince, But as we were responsable dog owners and had been looking and found our dog the people who had hit him tryed to sue us for $3000.00 which I would have happly paid if he was still alive. They ended up getting the money throught our public liability insurence as it was proven that the dogs broke out and hadnt just been left to rome.
The main point I wish to make was that many people said afterwards that they had seen them but none of them had tryed to keep them safe or ring the pound I would have been more than happy to collect them from the pound.
I relise that this is different as our dogs were muched loved members of our family, But this dog is better of at the pound than being hit by a car or abused futher.
SORRY FINISHED

I agree. what else could you do? the poor dog was dragging a chain around, which to me means life at home wasnt that great. hopefully the pup will be adopted, but even going down is better than being chained, possibly ignored, and starved....poor dog. I wish I could find the owner and find out what happened. I'm getting ballistic about this stuff in my old age. I may have given them quite a run for their money...

maybe it's just how we do it here but shouldn't they have been the ones to give the money as it was proved the dogs escaped and weren't lefy to roam and it was them who hit the dog and killed him?

there may have been some damage to the car, although I couldnt imagine hitting a dog would cause that much damage. even a big dog, like a Rottie. I got in a wreck a long time ago trying to avoid hitting a dog.
I swerved, hit a mud slicked ditch offside the road, and spun out. I ended up in the opposite lane, and was hit by an oncoming car. no injuries to anyone, but both cars were damaged. Both the police and the insurance company told me "next time, hit the dog. it's not worth dying or killing someone over" the dog escaped and ran into a nearby neighborhood. the police also told me that if I could find the owner, I could make them pay for the damages since the dog was running loose and there are strict leash laws around here. Now her case was different, the dogs escaped and she could prove it, but maybe the laws there are somewhat similar.

There was damage to the car and they were uninsured, He was hit just out of town where the speed limit had changed to 100kms an hour so she said she thought she had hit a calf. I would have been happy to hand over the cash had I still had my baby and we were forunite that the puplic Liabilty on our house insurence covered it. We had to have a bloke come around and assess whether the dogs were confinded to a yard or were left to roam, this wasnt hard to prove as Prince had damaged two fences and broken under the house. We also had photos of other times when he had complety shreadded the back door and trashed a croc proof sercurity door. He would go absulutly berserk with storms well before they actually hit town so it was difficult to judge. I still get very upset about it even though its been almost 8 years since. :drinking:
RIP Jake (and Prince?)

Thanks everyone. I'm checking on him pretty regularly, he's still there in holding but when he gets put up for adoption I'll post the petfinder link. I plan on trying to talk my neighbor into adopting him. That night the dog played so well with his yellow lab (a female) ...

CDG I'm glad your mom called on your neighbor. Hope they can do something about it, best case jolt the owners into caring for their dog (wouldn't hold my breath though).

We did we been thinking about it for awhile but if u read my post when the poor thing was out in thunder and lighting and all those times my dad caught it and the time my friend caught it thats what pissed me off cuz my friend for him to goto her house he'd have to cross moreland blvd (a highway) and they r lucky he didn't get ran over. the night it was raining and thunder/lighting my dad went over and pretty much yelled at her cuz from what he told me and mom he said "How would u feel if u got locked out of ur house and it's raining/thunder/lighting and noones home to let u in? Well did u ever think about how the dog feels right now? Husky mix or not he shouldn't be out in the rain!" My dad is friends with her husband and he told him what happened and he told my dad that it's her dog and I'm not sure but i think he had a few words with her when he got home cuz that dog hasn't been out that long since.
