Guest Mutts4Me Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 So backtracking to Tuesday... I went in for my orientation to be a Humane Society volunteer. The receptionists pointed me in the direction of a conference room, so I happily walked in and stopped short when I found myself staring at a lovely brindle and white APBT!!! Whoa. So I knelt down and introcuded myself to him. He had a pink lipstick stain on his white cheek - so cute! His name was Crash, and he was one of two Pit Bulls belonging to the volunteer coordinator, who was running the meeting. Everyone loved Crash. Older ladies who had cats were loving on him, and little kids were whispering "look at that Pit Bull!" and calling him over. It's cold here, so he was wearing a HS sweatshirt, looked like Rocky ;) Someone said "see, it's just a myth that Pit Bulls are monsters," and the Vol. Coord. looked up and said "YEah, Pit Bulls are the BEST breed." I'm thinking, this is sooo going to work for me :) So after introductions and such, we went on a tour, where we got to see oh-so many pits. I did notice that one of my favorites from the last 2 times I'd been there was gone, so I was so excited!!! (It's a low-kill shelter, so if there's empty space, the only reason a dog would disappear would be adoption). The Volunteer Coordinator brought something up that I'd vaguely noticed but never given much thought. The pit bulls and pit mixes have padlocks on their cage, and the rest do not. "This," she told us "is not for your protection, but theirs. People used to come in and steal them." :o (yeah, I do live in an icky city) We saw pretty much everything, and were told we were welcome whenever we wanted, and we could pretty much do whatever we wanted (walk dogs, play with cats, clean cages, do dishes, etc.) So I'm so excited to get back there and walk some dogs. Actually, my main goal is to get them up on Petfinder, which should involve me walking dogs :) I don't have any pictures yet. I may in the next few days, but I don't know that anyone's going to want to see pictures of homeless pups, kitties, and guinea pigs. Quote
__crazy_canine__ Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 Aw, lucky ducky! Hope you have fun with that! (Im sure you will though) And it doesnt suprize me much that people would steal pits... especially in Michigan, no offence Quote

Seriously, this is why, while it saddens me, I don't hate the Michigan Humane Society in Detroit for their pit bull policy. This whole area is f-ed up. Quote
ObedienceGrrl Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 I know you'll just have a blast there! Good luck with getting pics of everyone and putting them up on Petfinder! Quote

imported_Kat Posted January 14, 2005 Posted January 14, 2005 It sounds like you will be a great asset to the shelter. The idiots steal dogs here too in N.Ireland and use them for fighting and breeding  Quote
