Guest Mutts4Me Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 Thought I'd bring Carol's thread back up now that "that time" is here. http://forum.dogomania.com/viewtopic.php?t=6728 Quote
imported_Kat Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 Just wanted to add that on another doggy forum someone suggested putting a t-shirt on a dog who was scared of fireworks. Now I was very sceptical of this idea but the people who tried it came back with great reports so may be worth a try? Quote
boosiebutt Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 a t-shirt? Weird! Is there any reasoning why it's supposed to work? Quote
imported_Kat Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 I think that it is associated with pressure on certain parts of the body like under the dogs legs where t- touch would normally be applied. I honestly don't know for sure though. Quote
Guest Mutts4Me Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 Huh, interesting. Maybe it's a distraction thing, so they're so busy concerning themselves with the shirt that they forget to be afraid of the fireworks?? Interesting, though. I'm going to try the peppermint this time around. Quote
courtnek Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 I believe the t-shirt thingy is two-fold...it applies pressure, like Kat said, under the dogs arms (basically in the armpit and a little acros the chest) and also has the added benefit of smelling like their owner. it should be one of your shirts, not a new one by the way. I was told by a vet once that this is similar to swaddling in a baby. in a fearful situation, the dog feels more secure by being wrapped in something that smells likes it's people. Rescue Remedy helps somedogs, and the peppermint oil helps some. I only have that problem here on July 4th. It's too cold here for the neighbors to be outside blowing off fireworks, and the city is too far away for the noise to affect my dogs. Quote
boosiebutt Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 Yeah, we only have 4th fireworks here in Iowa too. My grandma had a shih tzu, only a puppy, who she had outside with her when the fireworks started. My grandma lived seriously 2 blocks from where they set of the fireworks from. So, the poor girl freaks out, and grandma said she'd better take the puppy inside. So, she just sets her inside the front door, shuts the door, and comes back to watch the fireworks. So this poor baby girl has no family inside with, she didn't even have a crate, or even a closet or small bathroom to get into. And the fireworks (of which a large propotion are just booms) are right next door. So, when the fireworks are almost over, one of my cousins goes to check on the puppy. Since the puppy was just loose in the house, when my cousin opened the door, she TOOK OFF. We looked for hours, but she was nowhere to be found. Then a couple of days later the pup found her way home, covered with burrs. Man, I love my grandma, but she is dumb as a stump about stuff sometimes. Quote
imported_Debbie Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 Nope, not worried here......fireworks will be going off in the city, being winter with the doors/windows closed up my Grrlz won't hear a thing. Quote
imported_Kat Posted January 1, 2005 Posted January 1, 2005 Arghhh Zoe tore down the door (literally tore away the door jam) last night and got so worked up and was retching away. Then today we ad a heavy monsoon type thunder storm and that drove her crazy as well. Thank goodness the next fireworks won't come until 12th July again! Quote
imported_Debbie Posted January 1, 2005 Posted January 1, 2005 Well I was definitely wrong, those fireworks must've been huge cause we could hear them......the dogs didn't freak, but they did bark when they first started. To them it was more like something outside is making a noise and I've got to be on guard !! Quote
courtnek Posted January 1, 2005 Posted January 1, 2005 yea here to. Ordinarily here at this time of year it's in the single digits outside. Yesterday was 50 degrees!! (heat wave for IL. in January) and last night was in the mid thirties, so we had fireworks galore. It doenst appear to bother the dogs, but the windows were all closed too. In the summer it makes Free nuts, not scared, but angry and wants to go out and attack the noise....they both slept through it last night. Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted January 2, 2005 Posted January 2, 2005 the fireworks stared at 7pm new years eve and went on untill about 1am new years day only Gladis was bothered we took her to bed with us which she enjoyed Quote
