Hardened epiglottis in yellow Labrador

Hi there, my dog is a Yellow Labrador aged 6years&4months called Dyson.
He's been very ill latley having difficulty breathing and making a very loud snoring like noise only louder. His throat has been so inflammed that the vet had him refferred to the Vet Hospital. Yesterday they gave him a general anesthetic and had a look. They found that his palete was slightly elongated so they trimmed that of a bit. They said normally he would be fine with it but because he's having trouble breathing they just dealt with it there and then. They also found that his epiglottis was rigid and inflammed, that i was told is part of the Larynx/voicebox. They had never seen this before so they took a flesh biopsy of it. His normal vet had allready taken a scraping of it for biopsy and that with his bloods came back negative. He's having a real hard time breathing still and when he gets to sleep he's stopping breathing at times. I've been staying awake on his worst nights making sure he breathes. He is to get very little exercise and no exertion whatsoever which does help but he's a Labrador and all he wants to do is play and run around. Its not Laryngeal Paralysis. Has anybodys elses dog suffered from the hardening of the epiglottis? Please folks any info on this as to why its happend would be great. He has had stick injuries but the vet said there is no scarring to show this? He takes zubrin for his legs which well help the swelling too and he's also on synulox for an anti-biotic. We really need your help folks as to what i can do to help him.
Thank you :(

That is odd. I, unfortunetely, have not heard of this so can't really help. I know the epiglottis can become hard in people when they have a flu or something but it goes away when the infection clears. Sounds almost like the opposite of sleep apnia where the epiglottis is soft and causes breathing problems.
