I am wanting to volunteer to help with an animal shelter or charity or rescue or something, but I can't be a foster since my mom would not allow it. I was wondering who here volunteers and have some questions about your involvement.

What/ what kind of organization(s) do you volunteer to?
Do you (other than volunteering) work outside the home, with a set schedule (8-5 M-F, shifts, etc)?
What do you do as a volunteer?
Do you see a lot of need for more volunteers? What would they need to do?
What kind of volunteer opportunities are there for those who must work 8-5 M-F?

Anything else you can think to tell me would be fantastic!

Thanks!

I just recently started volunteering for the SPDR, Seattle Pure Dog Rescue. I did my first transport last Sunday. I just keep checking the e-mail list to see if I could help with Booths, fundraisers, transport and whatever else pops up there. I would love to foster but we are away from home for too long during the day. I do work during the day but offer my services on the weekends and yes there is a huge need for volunteers. Good luck.

Gigi, how did you get in touch with the shelters? Was it just Animal Control and the Cedar Valley Humane Society? Would I be able to bring my dogs with me or would that be a bad idea?

I'm also looking at "virtual volunteer" opportunities, where I could help field rescue adoption applications, or maintain websites, or petfinder listings.

I sent an email to the CVHS today, but I don't know if the email address on petfinder was good, and the email form on the website was broken. If I don't hear back by Monday, I'll call.

I volunteer for Akita Buddies Rescue (akitabuddies.org)

Do you (other than volunteering) work outside the home, with a set schedule (8-5 M-F, shifts, etc)?

Yes, I work and am a full-time student.

What do you do as a volunteer?

I go to adoption events, do home checks, and make sure that the dog being adopted will be in a good enviroment (observing other pets in the house, etc.)

Do you see a lot of need for more volunteers?

Absolutely! I am so busy with other stuff I cant spend as much time voluntering as I would like to. The is ALWAYS something to do. Currently, I am trying to work some time into my schedule to go to the rescue and help build some kennels and runs.

What would they need to do?

Just make some calls and I am sure there are plenty of people with things to do.

You could always help at adoption events, volunteer at your local shelter or humane society.

It is a wonderful feeling to help find animals new homes. It can be a little depressing at times, but you learn to roll with the punches. At Akitabuddies there are currently 50+ Akitas and x's looking for homes. I look in their eyes and see Kira in all of them. They are just looking for someone to be loyal to. Best of luck and please keep us posted!
I cannot foster any dogs as my 2 are not into making doggy friends

I volunteer for a no kill dog shelter that has Adoption Days in my city on Saturdays.

Basically I talk with people who may or may not be interested in a dog/dogs. If Im not too busy with a dog, I have to talk to people a lot which isnt one of my strong points so I tend to keep a dog the whole time.

When I have a dog theres theres a long list of things I have to do...
-clean up after them first of all (not fun lol)
-walk them every hour or so just to be extra sure of no accidents inside
-work on training (which isnt necessary but I feel it is)
-lastly and most importantly, you have to keep the dog under control when its inside the store! I cant tell you how unprofessional it looks when a dog is hyper, doesnt listen, etc.

The basic routine Ive gotten into when going to PetsMart is setting up everything that we need, which would be the table for all our information, crates, pens, water bowls, toys, and just overall organizing the area. Then we bring the dogs in.

I have to say though Im very disappointed from volunteering... this shelter makes me so despressed with everything Ive heard and witnessed about it. Eh, in fact, I think Ill make a new topic about it and see if I can get some suggestions or even just support.

What/ what kind of organization(s) do you volunteer to?
-Humane Society and SPCA (see signature link)

Do you (other than volunteering) work outside the home, with a set schedule (8-5 M-F, shifts, etc)?
-I go to school part time and am currently looking for a part time job.

What do you do as a volunteer?
-Lots, I socalize dogs. I take dogs out into the play yard. I help with the shy scared dogs that need special attention. I attend events for pets like 'Pictures with Santa"Paws". I do paperwork. I help fill envelopes when stuff needs to go out. I interact with the public every moment I am at the shelter and give appropriate information when needed. All that and more! And i've only been there for 2 and a half months!

Do you see a lot of need for more volunteers? What would they need to do?
-Absolutly! We always need volunteers. Volunteers are what make shelters work so smoothly.

What kind of volunteer opportunities are there for those who must work 8-5 M-F?
-At the HS I'm at they are very easy to work with. You "work" a minimum of 3 hours a week. M-F after 3:00pm is a time for students and people who work. Saturdays are usually only for people who work full time. Saturdays at the HS you can go on 'Mobile Adoption' units and help out with public activities. Plus there is always paperwork or other things needed to be done.

Anything else you can think to tell me would be fantastic!

-Like some people said, it can get depressing when you work with animals that are neglected and need homes. But it's such a rewarding thing to do, especally when you know you have helped an animal. I wouldn't trade volunteering for anything in the world...(ok i'd trade it so that every animal would have a forever home  )
Thanks!

I used to volunteer at the USPCA in N.I. I basically just called up and asked could I help out which they were more than willing to let me do. I also had my job at the vet and fostered quite a few furbabes through there from pups and kittens that needed handreared to wilder animals like foxes and hedgehogs and badgers. :D
