Pumpkin the musher Posted November 18, 2004 Posted November 18, 2004 Does anyone know of a comprehensive list/explanation of dog coat colors, regardless of breed? I know there are a ton of descriptions, but have not been able to find one that is all-inclusive. Ideas? Quote
pyrless Posted November 18, 2004 Posted November 18, 2004 Try the AKC website- I seem to remember them having something on there. Also I have a book which has a pretty comprehensive list-it is the Dorling-Kinderley "Dogs" handbook. HTHS! Quote
Lokipups Posted November 18, 2004 Posted November 18, 2004 Here's the AKC color chart http://www.akc.org/registration/colormarkings.cfm And my personal favorite for Huskies http://www.huskycolors.com/ Quote

courtnek Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 does "black" count?   my lab mix is black. my foxhound is considered "tri-colored", although there is no specific tri-coloring necessary. there doesnt appear to be any specific patches or markings, just the three colors... Pumpkin the musher Posted November 19, 2004 Author Posted November 19, 2004 Thanks guys! The reason that I'm asking is that I'm trying to figure out what color my dog Bug is. My best guess is agouti, but her undercoat is not the same as the examples I've seen. She has the multicolored hair shafts, ending in black, but her undercaot varies from a "coffee with milk " brown to a very rich caramel. This is the best pic I have so far- I'm going to take some close ups this weekend and will post them later. Quote
Seijun Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 It could be either sable or agouti. I don't think the undercoat matters for either one. One thing I am confused about though, is that one site I read says agouti and sable are the same thing, but huskycolors.com has it as two different colors. Each says that for both the hairs are banded with individual colors, so I don't know what the difference is. I think agouti is a little darker than sable though, that's the impression I was given from looking at the pictures. ~Seij Quote
Lokipups Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 I would say she's a mix of agouti and sable, both colors have the hallmark "spectacles" like Bug has, but I think she's mostly agouti. Feh, who cares, she's beautiful :D ! Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 my friend has a lab whose papers say is FOX RED Paddy is the same colour but he is a 5 point red Quote
courtnek Posted November 20, 2004 Posted November 20, 2004 that sounds more like an irish setter than a lab....is it supposed to fall into the yellow lab category? I've never heard of a fox red lab.... Quote
AllAmericanPUP Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 Fox Red is just a variation of yellow labs. My aunt has a fox red lab Quote
between the wrinkles Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 yellow labs vary greatly in colour.some are light yellow and are sometimes called "white" Labs, while others have a deeper colour. the same goes for golden retrievers. Quote
