Mutt_Lady Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 Well, Autumn is here and where we are, that means that it is going to be rainy, muddy, and stinky here. Today it must have poured for 2+ hours and Kyra went out for a potty break during that time. When she came in, I was about to tell her to "stay", but she had already bolted through the door and was leaving cute little pawprints all over our rug. Last year we tried training her to sit and stay when she would come in and out of the house. It seems that since I was an idiot and did not keep on reinforcing the command, K has totally forgotten about that. We have tried teaching her again and we are failing miserably. :( Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get her doing so again? I miss my clean rugs! Also, what do you do with your dogs when it is raining? Do you still walk them or do you find a fun indoor activity to do? If so, what activity do you play and how do you play it? Thanks! Quote
JackieMaya Posted November 4, 2004 Posted November 4, 2004 The only carpeting I have in my whole house is on the steps going downstairs, and the only rugs I have are inside the front and the back doors. When my girls come inside after getting all wet, I drape a towel (I call it their "bathrobes") over each of them as they come in the door, and they stand there until I dry off their bodies and wipe their feet. My kitchen floor is linoleum, so it's very easy to clean up. Here are some of our inside games: "Hide under the blanket" is where I throw a blanket over Maya, and Jackie tries to find her. Sometimes I'll hide under the blanket too. This is their favorite inside game. And sometimes we'll play hide and seek where I'll go around the circle through the kitchen and living room, and as soon as one of them sees me, I hurry up and go the other way. And my dogs' favorite inside "toy" is a Diet Coke carton. They love to rip them up. They don't eat them, just rip them up. And they never rip up anything else. Quote

He wants his morning walk no matter what. So I bundle up and take him no matter how miserable it is outside. :) One game that we do like to play indoors is tag. It's very simple. I try to tag Buck and he trys to make it so I can't tag him. It's a lot of fun and always gives Buck the zoomies! Quote
pyrless Posted November 5, 2004 Posted November 5, 2004 oy! do i feel your pain! our pyr is white of course so in addition to the mud on the floor it seems there is half the backyard on the dog, and our elkhound mix adores the rain and likes to sit out in it. We let them in thru the back patio door which goes right into the kitchen. I put up a baby gate to block off the rest of the house before i let them in and then keep the Swiffers handy. I also sometimes keep them in there til they are reasonably dry so they don't use the couch as a towel... :) Hide and seek is a great game. My husband will tell them "Go find Mommy" and I hide behind doors and curtains and in the tub (that drives them crazy). but it seems to wear them out. Also, if it is really bad out and they want to go out and play, we just let 'em...that's what we bought the Bissell steamcleaner for! (i highly recommend that-it does tile floors as well as carpet if things get out of hand...) Also a good idea is putting white gravel by the entranceway they use-it kind of sponges off some of the mud. Quote
rotten_two Posted November 5, 2004 Posted November 5, 2004 neither gaia nor aspen is very fond of the rain! when gaia goes outside to go potty she always hunkers under a shrub so that she doesn't get so wet! both do their thing and run back up onto the porch and wait to go inside. they know that they get their feet wiped and they are very cooperative. as far as exercise inside we have our finished basement as a dedicated play area. we set up agility down there. tunnels, hoops, jumps, weaves and that takes the edge off on rainy days. we also play hide and find -- one of us will go hide some treats and then the pups find them. we do a lot of new trick training on rainy days. gaia loves to play "gonna get you" she has a special toy that comes out only for this game. the other easy way to tire out pups with cabin fever is to have them fetch up and down stairs. all the running gets some of the energy out.
