Well tomorrow Bud goes in at 8 am to get re-tested for heartworm. There is a chance it will still read positive because antigens can remain for 4-plus months after the first treatment, and it has only been 2 months, but our vet thinks it will be negative.

However even if it's positive I will get to start him on heartguard and if vet gives the OK we can finally start our exercise program. I have had Buddy - WOW exactly 2 months to the day today! Got his HW diagnosis the day after I got him, first treatment the next day ... I just want it to be behind us so we can romp and play and not be worried.

I am taking off to Petco to get him a bath / trim / blow dry. Have never allowed myself (or dog) this luxury before ... it has always been in my bathtub (or outside in warm weather) and my somewhat klutzy nail trimming. I just want to spoil him silly right now.

Anyway, please send good thoughts to Buddy for a clean bill of health tomorrow.

I'm sure Buddy will be just fine and be heartworm-free and live a long, happy life with you! Give him a hug for me!

Brutus, one of the big Golden boys I'm interested in adopting, was heartworm positive and had the treatment in August. They say that he needs to get a follow-up blood test four months after that (so I guess that would be December). They said they were glad when they could take the tennis balls back out of storage so he could play!

My Golden (Cracker) that I had when I was a teenager had heartworm when he was 2 years old. He had the treatment and was a big happy, healthy Golden boy until he passed away from cancer when he was 9 years old.

Here's a picture of Cracker (with my dad) when he was a Golden oldie.
