Kerislc Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 Has anyone heard of this or had this happen? I took Scout in to be neutered on Wednesday. They called me at about noon and told me that everything went well and he was resting. I got a call from the vet about two hours later and he told me that they had to redo the stiches so he was going to be pretty bruised and sore. I was in a meeting and I think I wasn't listening very well because that was only part of the story. I guess that after they tied his blood vessels off and stiched him up, the sutcher (sp?) came off and the blood vessels came untied. They had to go back in, redo the sutcher and stich him up again. They said this is rare, but it does occasionally happen because there is not foolproof way to tie off the blood vessels. I didn't know any of that until the next day. Well, not having anyone really explain the situation to me, I took him home that nightonly to have him cry all night long. I think I got about 15 minutes of sleep. I tried putting him in his kennel and after and hour I couldn't take it. I put him on our bed and he was fine for about an hour as long as I kept rubbing his belly. This went on the entire night. My husband took him back in at 7am and let the Vet Tech have it. That is when they called me and explained the whole situation. They told me that he needs to stay really still and needs to be on an anti-inflammatory and an antibiotic. I left him there last night and called today and he is doing better. Should I leave him there another night just to be safe? Sorry this is so long! I am just so worried about him. Quote
courtnek Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 unless you can keep him really still at home, or maybe have the vet give you a calming agent, it might be better to leave him there. I have had surgery and pulled sutures moving around when I wasnt supposed to..... it's very painful, which is probably why he was crying....he'd be happier at home of course, so maybe the vet can give you a tranquilizer for now so you can take him home? just a thought... hope he gets better real soon. Quote
Aroura Posted October 30, 2004 Posted October 30, 2004 I'm suprised they didn't give him any pain killers! I'd seriously be looking more into what exactly happend - I know that if something like that happend to one of my dogs at the vet I'd never go there again. If they didn't have anything to hide they probably would have gone over it when you picked him up. If you have a crate take him home and crate him, thats where Diego is at the moment because of his leg, and I'm thaking god that I crate trained him because it almost didn't happen because my boyfriend wanted him to sleep in bed with us for the rest of his life! But I think all dogs, reguardless of size, should be crate trained, because you never know when they're going to need it! Quote
kendalyn Posted October 30, 2004 Posted October 30, 2004 Your vet sounds kind of incompetent. I'd see another one next time. Good luck on your puppy's recovery! Quote
imported_Debbie Posted October 30, 2004 Posted October 30, 2004 :( Sounds terrible.....poor little guy  I know you must be a nervous wreck too !! {{{HUGS}}} I hope this Vet doesn't charge you more for his mistake........ And I hope the poor little guy gets to come home soon and he recovers fully !! Quote
imported_Kat Posted October 30, 2004 Posted October 30, 2004 Firstly RUN from that vet! Sutures have developed so much now from catgut to vicryl and they don't become loose especially not internal sutures. Incompetence on the part of the vet from not properly tying a vessel like the vas deferens, is not acceptable. A neuter is the easiest op that a vet can do! I find this highly suspicious with a dog recovering in a cage from a simple neuter. Quote
courtnek Posted October 30, 2004 Posted October 30, 2004 that's true Kat. For some reason I was thinking "spay". For something as relatively simple as a male neutering, this should not have happened! :o Quote
AllAmericanPUP Posted October 31, 2004 Posted October 31, 2004 uh well we had a hell of a time keeping eli and barkley from bleeding and such when they got neutered. they both ripped out their stiches and staples, even with cones on!! Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted October 31, 2004 Posted October 31, 2004 it's normally a simple operation Paddy didn't even notice his bits had gone Quote
courtnek Posted October 31, 2004 Posted October 31, 2004 all of my dogs up to Freebee have been male, and never once did anything like that happen.....seems very odd...... Quote
Kerislc Posted November 1, 2004 Author Posted November 1, 2004 Just wanted to give an update on Scout. I took him home Saturday afternoon and he is feeling much better. He is still wearing the cone around his head but other than that is acting normal. The vet that I went to owns the hospital and has been a vet for 30+ years and that is why I took my dog there. He called and talked to me personally and I was given a very sincere apology (not that that helps Scout). He admited that he did make a mistake, which is always nice. He then called about every 4 hours to give me an update. They didn't charge me for anything and gave us two big bags of food to take home. The vet even called on Saturday evening from his house to make sure that everything was going well. I still will never take Scout there again. That whole experience was way to hard on both of us. And the poor guy still had to wear his bumble bee halloween costume. :D Quote
imported_Kat Posted November 1, 2004 Posted November 1, 2004 A simple op like a neuter has no room for mistakes in my opinion. I was neutering with supervision when I was 17 at the practice where I worked! Still its good that the vet did own up and that you weren't charged, but most importantly of course is that Scout is healthy and well. Quote
courtnek Posted November 2, 2004 Posted November 2, 2004 actually, DO, I had to do a makeshift "repair" on my Golden, since it was Sunday night and the vet was closed, and back in those days Emergency Vet clinincs were few and far between. He got his leg ripped open by a nasty, ill bred GSD, who's owner acquired him to "protect her", because she liked to sunbathe nude in her backyard....  anyway, he got out and attacked my Golden, and for the first and only time in my life, I hurt a dog. I kicked him in the head to make him stop. He ran off, but Taurus' leg was slashed and bleeding, and it wouldnt stop. I sterilized a needle and sewed him up. It was with sewing thread, but it worked, and the vet said I did a good job. Quote
