I really wish I were in a position to have another dog! I live so close to you! It would be so easy for me to drive over and pick her up!

Unfortunately, she would be better off with someone else because I just can't have another dog right now. :-(

She's gone.

I called the HS, put in a report, then took her for a long walk down the road. A guy mowing his lawn glanced at us as we passed, and then on our way back, he asked if I'd just found her. I said yes, he asked if she had blue eyes, and I said Yes.

They just got her from the Humane Society a couple weeks ago, and they spent the last week in Florida. Had their son watch the house...

I told him that all her ribs were showing and she was really hungry. He just replied that she had food in the garage (which she instantly went to when I released her into her backyard)... They just got home late last night, and I don't want to judge... but apparently mowing their lawn was more important than looking for or at least reporting their missing puppy.

Oh, the HS said she was a mix of Dobe and Collie... who knows. Her name is Moody, and she lives fairly close, so I can see her grow up.

Sasha was very happy to watch me come home without the puppy, I must say.

d you ever find out what She-Ra's real name is ?

Uh Debbie, read back, her name is Moody ...

Mutts4 did the dog or owners show any affection for each other? It would make me feel better if you sensed they had even a shred of happiness at getting their dog back!

Well, to be fair, I got the impression that they were in Florida either on business or for a family issue. And it's a long way from Michigan, 2-3 days of driving (they drove). So I don't know if the puppy had just gotten out Sunday morning when we found it, or if it'd been wandering before then, but it would've taken a while for them to get home anyway.

The puppy (Moody) seemed happy enough to see the guy. She jumped up on him like she jumps up on everyone. And she ran right to where her food was in the garage. They'd just gotten a teeny Siamese kitten, which was staring out from the doorway. Super cute, I wonder if they have a thing for blue eyes.

I'm glad she's home now... She has a nice, big fenced in yard to run around. I don't know if she lives outdoors or goes in at night, though. Her owner seemed nice enough, but I'm just bewildered that he was mowing instead of looking for his puppy... or even reporting her missing. I don't feel bad for taking her in, because no one was looking for her. She spent a lot of time in our front yard, and I walked her down the road twice Sunday, so someone would've spotted her easily if they'd looked. We live on a dirt road, but it connects to a 4-lane road, so I'm glad we caught her before she found the road.

We're already determined to keep a very careful eye on her.

Hey Doberfanatic... did you have any thoughts on the blue eyes? Weimaraner? Mutation?

Well it's good that she found her home, it's a good idea not to judge, they could have spent all morning looking for her but not think to contact the humane society or something, or maybe its the wifes dog and the husband isn't all that attached to it or something. Lets just hope they love her as much as any of us would!

Collie would explain the eyes, but it does seem weird that the dog would turn out looking exactly like a dobe, but keep the eye colour of the collie. If white dobes carry a blue eyed gene this would probably explain it, but it also seems weird that if it is possible to breed blue eyed dobes why the puppy millers haven't got their grubby little mitts all over it and pumping them out all over the place!

well, maybe not. The reason I say this is because Free looks almost exactly like a purebred lab (she's in my avatar) to someone who is not familiar with labs. but she is part shepherd, and part pointer, yet she looks like a lab. also, when they're puppies they look different then they do when grown up. when a puppy, Free looked exactly like a lab puppy. So Moody could be part dobe, part weim or husky, and just taken the majority of her looks from the dobe. does that make sense?

Blue eyes are recessive in Collies, though. They generally only happen in Blue Merles. So if you crossed a collie (possible blue eyes) and a doberman (brown eyes unless albino), what's the chance that you'd get a Doberman looking puppy with blue eyes?

I didn't study genetics much, but I believe the first corss should generally look like a melding of the parents, except for some very dominant traits, like a black lab mix almost always looking like a black lab (maybe differing ear shapes or white patches). But if you read the Boxer/Corgi genetic study, you saw that the first crosses looked like tall Corgis. In future crossings, they picked the ones with the traits they wanted and crossed them, eventually producing (within 5 generations) dogs that looked like purebred Boxers but often had natural bobtails. I don't know what I'd expect a Doberman/Collie cross to look like, but I wouldn't expect a blue-eyed Doberman... maybe white patches, some with fluffiness, none with blue eyes.

Now, blue eyes are dominant in Weimaraners, and Weimaraners are actually pretty closely related to Dobermans (one of the more direct ancestors, I believe) and more resemble them in body shape. So perhaps a Doberman/Weimaraner would end up looking like a blue-eyed Dobe.

Like Aurora said, though, I'd imagine if it was that easy, we'd be seeing Blue-eyed Dobes for sale everywhere. Not necessarily show-able, but very striking.

Ah, I'm just so intruigued by that little girl... I hope she's happy, and I can't wait to see how she turns out.
