bgb699 Posted October 5, 2004 Posted October 5, 2004 Now this is probably a stupid question to all you vetran dog owners out there, but I gave Hunter a ham bone to gnaw on and to my horror he ate it. All of it. Im freaking out cause I thought dogs just chewed on them and maybe buried them. Hunters dad keeps reasurring me that dogs actually eat them and its perfectly fine, but it still doesnt sit well with me. Is this ok and will it pass thru fine or do I need to take him to the vet? Isnt this hard on his digestive system? Quote
TDG Posted October 5, 2004 Posted October 5, 2004 yes, dogs actually do eat bones. mine does on a daily basis. just please only give raw bones, never anything that has been cooked, smoked, dried or otherwise treated. Quote
bgb699 Posted October 5, 2004 Author Posted October 5, 2004 Hmm... I used it to cook ham n bean soup first...is that bad? Quote
TDG Posted October 5, 2004 Posted October 5, 2004 well, luckily things turned out ok this time, but you shouldn't risk it again. cooked bones become brittle and can break into dangerously sharp splinters. if you want to give your dog the fun experience of recreational bones, go to your butcher or meat department at the grocery store and get him some knuckle bones. they are also called soup bones or marrow bones. ask for ones that are not cut into slices but whole, or if sliced, only lenghtwise. beef ribs and beef chuck neck bones are nice too.
