schippsmom Posted September 19, 2004 Posted September 19, 2004 :Dog_run: Not sure what happened at the cabin. While I was cleaning up and getting ready to go home Re-Run came back the hallway with his tail between his legs and ears flat back. He looked at me, tried to sit down and fell over :o . He got back up and I went to get my daughter, he followed me down the hall but he was walking sideways and looked like he was trying to throw up. When I got to the kitchen the cupboard to the cleaning supplies was open but nothing was spilled on the floor or looked disturbed. By this time I'm thinking I'm god knows how far from his vet and it's a Sunday morning. Re-Run was doing his best to keep up with me and I wanted to get him outside in case he did throw up. I open the door and Re-Run went head first down the steps, he rolled over once before he hit the bottom. I yelled for Steph who was at he boyfriends cabin a few away from ours and they have dogs and live there so he would know a vet in the area. They saw me running up the road, yelling for Steph and Re-Run was close behind me. He was walking a bit sideways but getting better control over himself. By the time I told them what happened and asked about a vet, Re-Run seemed fine. Steph did notice the odd behavior so I know I wasn't seeing things. When we calmed down and Re-Run was back to normal we went back to our cabin and looked again for signs that Re-Run was in the cleaning supplies but they didn't look disturbed. He appeared to be drunk but no alcohol was open and it happened in 2-3 minutes and alcohol doesn't effect dogs that suddenly and disappear that quickly. He never did vomit so I'm not sure if he ate something and he seems to have recovered completely. Could he have had a seizure or does it sound like something else? Any info, opinions or advise would help me!! I've been a basket case since it happened. Quote
courtnek Posted September 19, 2004 Posted September 19, 2004 I think you should take him to a vet. He may have been stung by something venemous, and while he seems better now, that kind of reaction is dangerous. Also, stroke is a possibility. Just for safeties sake I would take him in Quote
imported_Kat Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 If Rerun had even licked around the residue of a cleaning bottle then it may have been enough to send him into this sort of confused state. Te other alternative is a reaction to a sting which can sometimes throw a dog off balance and make them feel generally ill. I would keep an eye on him and see how he is making sure that he is drinking small quantities of water frequently. If it happens again, then you would be best to take him to your vet. Quote
schippsmom Posted September 20, 2004 Author Posted September 20, 2004 :Dog_run: Re-Run will go to the vet tomorrow. The vet is worried about organ damage so bloodwork will be done. I'll keep everyone posted Paula Quote
imported_Kat Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 Good luck to you and Re-run *hugs* Quote
courtnek Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 good luck to you and rerun. let us know how it goes. Quote
Horsefeathers! Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 It sounds kind of similar to some of the seizures we've handled. The thing with seizures is that it can happen once and never again or it can become a regular thing, they can be mild or they can make you think that it's surely the end... *sigh* I hope it was just something minor. Maybe something he got into, or something that got hold of him, but won't have any lasting effects. Good luck at the vet's and let us know how it goes. Poor Re-Run, but I'll bet it was worse on you as far as being scary. It's funny how dogs can kind of shake these things off while we agonize over them. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 Something to consider might be vestibular syndrome. Our Max has it and every once in a while he has an episode. The first time it happened we thought that he had a stroke. Quote
schippsmom Posted September 22, 2004 Author Posted September 22, 2004 :Dog_run: Dr. H. was running about 1 hour behind so we are just getting home now. He is thinking a grand mal seizure  They took blood, CBC & blood chem., so I will call tomorrow after 4. This is going to be a long night. Just like HF said, he may have more, he may not but Dr. H. said it is a treatable condition. I wonder how many others he has had while I was at work. Now I'm afraid to go to work. Paula & Re-Run BTW my daughter was home sick today and I kept calling her to check on Re-Run. She finally said, "I'm fine Mom, thanks for checking on me too" Quote
imported_Kat Posted September 22, 2004 Posted September 22, 2004 LOL about your daughter  Keep us posted today and paws are pressed  Quote
schippsmom Posted September 22, 2004 Author Posted September 22, 2004 :Dog_run: I'm having an emotional day :( . Was at a friends house and she always gives me her copies of Dog Fancy and I just happen to get the May 2004 issue that has schipperke's in it!!! I was so excited to see that I opened the magazine and started reading and than I saw "Known Health Problems: Epilepsy and mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB (MPS IIIB) a fatal disease, symptoms of which include tremors and balance problems." I screamed and started to cry, I feel bad for my friend, she didn't know what I was upset about. I called the vet, and the results were not in yet so I have to call tomorrow after 11:30. It's awful, yesterday I was worried about seizures and today I'm praying it's turning out to be epilepsy. I will be greatful when I at least know what I'm dealing with. Paula Quote
