my moms friend - kind of a friend of the family- recently adopted a very young beagle........ now, that worried me because she has a history of getting dogs because they are cute and not really knowing much about the breed, etc....... my first comments to my mom were "does she realize how much they bark and bray, I cant see she would like that....." mom said she swore she researched them and they are "perfect".
well, that was about a week ago and today my mom says she told her they are goign to have her debarked!! I know they had a sheltie yrs ago that they did that to, and as much as I hate it I have heard of people doing that with shelties - do people do that with beagles too??!!
the other thing that gets me is she says she likes beagles "becasue they dont shed" :o hahahahaha my beagle sheds a ton!! their short smooth coat is nice, but it definetely sheds!!
I would love to say something to this lady, but I think anything would jsut make her mad - any suggestions on waht I should do? or do I just keep my mouth shut?

This won't help you much, but I do have a question.. Isn't there a new "debarking" procedure out that does not involve surgery? I heard there was someting new involving lazers or something, don't remember what exactly...

I had a freind a long time ago who had their Corfi debarked and that still still barkd it was on lyl more raspy and painful sounding. so in my experience it didnt' cure the barking at all

I think you should say something! I am seriously against Debarking, whats the point? Also, as sctty_lvr mentioned, the dog is already annoying her.

Print out info on dogs and training, and/or how hard training and owning a Beagle could be. Give her some of your personal experiences owning a Beagle. Have a long talk with her, and tell her straight that you do not think she should have that Beagle. Although you *may* lose her as a friend, at least you will save an innocent puppy' bark-and much more. :(

Keep us updated!

Thanks you guys........ I searched online last night for some info on debarking - I dont know much about it, but I am against doing something this drastic especially with a 7 wk old puppy youve only had a week!! to me IF it was ever done (which wouldnt be me) it should only even be considered as a LAST resort after all kinds of training have been tried.
the problem is I have had a hard time finding things against the surgery! the vast majority of articles say its an easy surgery that is beneficial for owners and neighbors! (although most do also say it should be done after training has beeen tried)
scotty_lvr - those are exactly the things I said and told my mom..... it jsut makes me crazy to think about it - my bailey is only part beagle, but there are alot of things we deal with that take alot of patience and training.
I dont talk to this woman alot - mostly my mom sees her, so Im trying to figure out what is the right thing to do..... or how to do it!
to her benefit, she did ask about training classes (but that was before she announced she was planning to do debarking)

I can not imagine reading about a Beagle and still thinking they are the perfect dog! LOL I own one! I found her...read up on them and decided she wasn't for me. The first three years were HELL!

The running out the door. I walked out to greet my parents who were dropping James off from a weekend visit and off she goes. I yelled DOWN and she dropped but mom fussed at me because the whole neighborhood could hear me...yeah so that's the only way she listens when she wants to GO!

Debarking......I once rescued an abused Doberman (28 pounds when pulled from the shelter to give you an idea and his owner says he has major issues that I didn't see in his time here) who was debarked. I happened to be home on bed rest at the time and I tell you when he barked for the first time I PANICKED! I thought he was choking on something. He sounded like he was dying. I laughed at it everytime after that because everytime I heard it I freaked because it honestly sounded like he was choking on something.

One of the things I've always loved about my Beagle is the bray. I know the differences in her bray. There is the "I just want to make noise", the "There is something going on", "There is something there that I don't like", "Uh oh here comes the rain".....

She has so many different sounds she makes that let me know what's going on it's helpful. I even know when the neighborhood kids are fighting out side because that bray is different that the one telling me that there is someone outside.

She shouldn't have gotten a beagle and I'll be honest Friend or no friend....I would say something to her. I've done it to my mom's friends....my mom now just tries to change the subject when one of her friends says something she knows will set me off.

LOL Tammy - I know what you mean! (or you know what I mean!) I have said if I researched beagles first i prob wouldnt have gotten one  but bailey kind of chose me and I absolutely love her, but some days are definetely he**! she doesnt bray exactly, but she does have the same many different sounds - ranging from *very* high pitched yips, to deep gutteral barks......

I nearly got a Beagle about 2 years ago. I like the vocalizations but I was worried the neighbours wouldn't. They sure didn't like the howling Tyr (our old foster) did when we went out.

you guys have cracked me up!!!

donkeys "bray" (wee aww wee aww) beagles and Hounds in general 'bay".

and baying is not something most people who are not familiar with hounds are accustomed to. Baying is harder to get used to then barking, because its a long, drawn out sad-sounding-like howl. also loud. My foxhound does it all the time. I have never tried bitter apple, I have some somewhere.
does it really stop them from unwanted barking/baying?

just some info I learned since owning this loud, howling beastie...

the bay was developed as a hunting tool, because its tone and cadence will carry farther than a bark. It literally "rides on the wind" (which is why you can hear dogs baying from much farther away than those that are barking) and since hounds tend to hunt fairly far from the hunter (with the exception of beagles, I think those little legs were bred in to allow the hunter to follow them closely) they needed a sound that would carry long distances. Foxhound hunters ride horseback to keep up. Bloodhounds are allowed to get far ahead of the "hunter" while tracking people (nowadays)
because the bay carries so far. The sound carries for great distances.
I believe it was developed as a form of the wolf's howl, which also carries
great distances, and has similar cadence and tonal quality.

Scotty lvr, could you let me in on the bitter apple piece? I could really use it.

thanks.

Yes, yes and YES! I've posted several times of how I use it on my gang, court, but I use it as a "reward" more than a "punishment" like SL does. It accomplishes the same thing, though.

You are right...now that I read back I realize what I was typing and thinking were two different things.

Belle's BAY is much different than her bark and has many different means depending on how long, how short, how often (Every few seconds or just once). It's not her bark at all. Her bark is rather annoying!

Speaking of BAYING my ASD Beaux (He's an ASD?????? Mix) BAYS louder, longer, and more heartbreaking than any hound I know! It's awful! My Neighbors think I'm killing him because it's just not time for him to come inside to eat...which is when he does it most often!

I missed those somehow. sorry. How do you use bitter apple as a "reward"? I have always used is as a "dont go there" when sprayed on the furniture and stuff...I thought they ddint like it? I'm confused. ( not unusual in my case)

oh yea....my girl's bays are all different depending on the situation. I can detect the tonal changes in each of them. However, I want to stop her baying at night when people come down to use the bathroom. She is very over protective of me. I want her to realize that if someone is already in the house, I let them there...

she startles easily...

Heh heh, Debbie, that's the soundest bit of advise this woman, or many other people I've known for that matter, could listen to.

As far as de-barking goes, I'm quite certain that Beagles are the number one de-barked dog in the country, Shelties probably come in second.

Hey, Zoey bays too! She's normally a quite dog and she's never made a peep for probably the first 6-9 months we've had her, I think that after awhile my husky, China taught her to find her voice. Anyway, it's the most god-awful sound you've ever heard, kind of like a fire engine who's siren had a blow-out...

got THAT right. its the most gut-wrenching sound you have ever heard, until you get used to it. One of my neighbrs called AC after hearing Laurel's bay...thought she was being tortured. We got it worked out, but that bay is very distressing to people who arent familiar with it.
