I took Zaphod to the Petsmart to have his nails trimmed (I'm a big coward but all his nails are black) and I left Kavik at home. Zaphod has almost never been without the presence of Kavik.
:o
He is a completely different dog when he is alone.
He is calm and relatively quiet, well behaved and quite smart.
I don't get it. When he's around Kavik he's an unfocused, goof.

Anyway I was so proud of him and from now on I think I'll take the boys for outings seperately at least a couple times a week.

isn't it strange the way that they act when they don't have their side-kick.

Meg and her bother Shane were brought up together and when they trained together, one pup would always run across the field to where the other was being trained. At this point we agreed to train separately and it did the trick

I reckon it just means Zaphod is normal. Individually, any of my dogs can be the image of manners and training. Get them all together and sometimes they're like a runaway train.

I think individual time and space is important for dogs just as it is people. You've found something else that works.

So I took the boys out for individual walks a few times and we are making much better progess with heeling even without the prong. (I usually alternate prong and flat buckle collar so they don't think they just have to heal when wearing the prong.)
Zaphod is actually making faster progress than Kavik but Kavik is generally pretty good he just tends to pop off a bit still.
Unfortunately while Kavik will fuss when I leave him home alone he settles fairly quickly - Zaphod on the other hand barks every 5 seconds the entire time I'm out and he is alone. So it appears Zaphod has some seperation anxiety that I was unaware of because he has NEVER been alone. Oh well we'll work on that too.

I think it's a good idea to give them separate time with you. I have been doing that simply because taking 3 dogs can be a pain in the backside. But it does give you so bonding time with each dog that is kind of nice. One of my dogs doesn't like it at all though he wants to be the one to go everytime and grabs the end of my pants when I am leaving with one of the other dogs. Then when I am out the door he barks like a maniac. I have been told though he buttons up after a few minutes so it hasn't been a problem. Aren't they so much like kids they get so jealous of each other.
