well it never fails -- everytime we go to the vet we meet the darndest people. i am keeping a journal so that i can compile a book entitled "stupid people i meet at the vet" and here is my most recent account.

aspen had just finished his acupuncture and we were at the counter waiting to check out. coincidentally a white toy poodle and his mother finished about the same time. aspen, the most docile creature i have ever had the pleasure of knowing, was sitting politely at my side wondering when another treat might rain down on him. the poodle was, in toy dog fashion, being coddled in the arms of his mother. this woman turns to me and my fiance and with great seriousness says "what is wrong with those dogs? are they just mean?" ever the smarta$$ i replied "why? are you missing a finger?" she did not see the humor in my statement.

so i say to her "please observe my vicious beast" and i run aspen through his repetoire of tricks. he is spinning and twirling and speaking like a champ. high fives, shakes and down stays like the true showman i know him to be. sporadically in his routine i give him a charlee bear treat to tell him he is doing wonderfully. the woman was impressed especially when our vet confirmed that aspen is by far the sweetest rottie she has ever met. however she was not content to let it go at that. she looked at me and said "hmmm rather small treat for such a large dog." excuse me? so i politely explained that he is treated generously through out the day and that for this reason we keep the treats small -- lest we end up with a 200 lb rottie! duh! she nods in disbelief -- oh the righteous indignation! so we are still completing our visit and i am called to the counter to sign the cc receipt. i ask this lady if i can pet her poodle to which she replies, "well he thinks he is the boss and he will probably snap at you!" :o :o :o

what is wrong with my dog eh? what balls you have miss thang! i always seem to find these people!

I said why? they are supwer nice ans sweet dogs. she said she's just nverous of them. I said well AZoey is a rottie and she wasi i know and i was scared of her, she's just to big. :o oey's only 65 pounds and by all means not a BIG rottie..
Then we went out to brunch with a freind of my mom's and we were showing them pictures from the trip and the guy said oh rotties where there? that's enough to make me not want to go, i hate them..

I know someone is going to come in here and stick up for small dogs but IMO a lot of small dogs are raised in the hands of people who dont know what theyre doing and end up being little dominant BRATS!!!

Irresponsible people upset me so much! Geez, I just dont get how people can be satisfied with the fact that their dog cant be pet without it snapping... and they have the nerve to say that big dogs are dangerous!

Im sorry you had to go through that! ... hey it couldve been a lot worse!!!

Ugh! I like little toy dogs so much and it drives me berserk to see them so often in the hands of people who think of them as little people in fur suits, or as some fashion accessory. They don't realize they are DOGS and need training and structure like any DOG. My little Peanut Poodlet is such a joy to be around that I wish more people could experience her and maybe some other folks could learn that brattiness is not cute.

I have one client with this bratty Lhasa (actually one of my Devin's littermates... talk about puppies that should never have been created  ). He was kicked out of the only other groom shop in town for his behavior. His single mom owner calls him her baby and nothing is too good for him. She keeps a leash attached to him 24/7 because she can't reach down to pick him up without him biting her! Still, I hear her talk about how he bites her when she tries to get into her own bed and take her pillow from him. He is the king of his castle and he knows it. No amount of telling her to keep him off the bed and to stop accepting his behavior sinks in. The thing is he's not a difficult dog to handle if you don't accept his "temper tantrums." He's turned out to be fairly easy to groom even though in the beginning he was a flurry of gnashing teeth (I always say no to biters, but, well, he was Devin's brother and the lady pleaded with me so much for help  ... I'm actually glad I finally took him on). This dog LOVES me and I think it's because I took the "stress" away of him having to test me. He knows I won't put up with it. Too bad the lady doesn't get it and people will see him and think ALL Lhasas are like that. I love this client to bits and she's so sweet, but I wish she'd get control of this dog for his sake as well as hers. That behavior is exactly the reason Devin was surrendered to me.

I adore little dogs and it just irks me that so many people don't know how to handle them. I'm the first to gripe that brattiness is NOT cute.

Divine and others who work in vet clinics or groom salons, do you ever come home and start stories with "a dumb*ss came into the clinic today..." I always feel like Al Bundy (Married With Children) when he would tell his "a fat lady came into the shoe store today..." stories.

Yeah and youre compltely right about that! Every single small dog (well toy breeds anyway) Ive met has been a brat and thats why I cant stand toy breeds!!! :x

I hate the fact that I am this way but I guess its something Ive grown up with and it just kinda sticks. HF I wanna come met your dogs... :) maybe that would get my picture of small dogs being brats out of my head!

I started to laugh at this, until the two Chi's next door went into ballistic mode, barking at something, and has all the neighborhood dogs in barkfest mode now. Including mine. THERE IS NOTHIHNG OUT THERE!! Some guy walked by with his dog. now the whole neighborhood is up in arms. If this guy would let his dogs IN they wouldnt be reacting to every leaf blowing by....

Funny story.....isn't that always the way ???

Crazy Canine....there are good and bad in all sizes of dogs.....just like people you can't make a sweeping statement and stereotype a whole group.

I had my Lab/Rott (who's the most passive and sweetest thing....) at the Vet and I was at checkout and 2 young women came in with a mini Dachshund...they made some remark about their dog being a small treat for Gretchen, and I said "Actually your dog would probably run rough shod over her, she's so passive" and then I had her sit, shake, and speak......and they were ooooooing and ahhhing all over the place.
1st impressions are a bitch. :D
