StarFox Posted August 12, 2004 Posted August 12, 2004 I though I had heard every misconception about pits that there could be. -Locking Jaws -people agressive. But look what I found on a differnt forum! "The Petfinder website has a library. Many different breeds of dogs can be looked up. Having been involved with animal rescue locally I wondered about the Pit Bulls. They were originally bred to be cattle dogs. To be able to herd cattle they had to have powerful jaws to be able to 'nip' the cattle hard enough to get their attention. While breeding for these traits they accidentally bred out or mutated the gene that tells the dog when to nip, when to bite, and when to stop. This also mutated or triggered the aggressive gene. The problem is not all Pit Bulls have these genes. However, for the time being they do not have a really good way of finding out which dogs have the genes and which dogs don't. I hope explained this correctly. " :o :o :o :o Quote

AllAmericanPUP Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 pit bulls were actually originaly bred to fight bulls and then they were actually used as herding dogs. and lastly they were used for dog fighting. Quote
Canis erectus Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 In my research, I've come to the conclusion that if you trace the pit bulls lineage back, waaaay back, you can find that they were actually used to drove cattle to the market in Europe. This would have been long before they were Pit Bulls, or really even the old Bulldogs. The Bull dog then come about from that origional droving dog in order to bait the bulls. This dog was eventually made it's way to America were it was bred with various terriers and became a bull-fighting, and then a dog-fighting breed. In a round-about way I guess you could say that they were once herding dogs, but it is incorrect to label them as all such herding purposes and instincts were bred out of it long before they were bred to be Pit Bulls. courtnek Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 well, "in the beginning, there was Heaven and Earth..." seriously, all of today's purebred dogs were bred for a purpose. not for looks, show or stud. They had jobs to do, thats why we bred them in the first place. If not for needing a dog to do a specific task, we would have no purebreds today. Herding was one of the big ones. Think about it. How many "herding" dogs are there today? that started out as herders? Collies (of all kinds) Shepherds (of all kinds) those two classifications probably include 10-15 different types of dogs! then the guardians, the vermin chasers, the hunters, and the various sub-classes of each. Would it surprise me that at some point in its history Bully dogs were herders? No, it wouldnt. they were changed over time, to do different tasks, just like Labs no longer drag fishnets to shore....
