Hi everyone! I'm new to this group although Ive been reading all the posts for a while. What a wealth of information you guys have! I'm about to become mom to a 9 week old German Shepherd/ Yellow Lab Mix boy on Sunday. I'm soooo excited, but very nervous too as this is my first puppy! So, I have a couple of questions for you all...I have 2 cats who have never seen a dog in their lives, whats going to be a good way to introduce our newest family member? Also, were driving about 5 hrs to pick him up, what should I bring with me to make it a good trip back? If anyone has any words of wisdom for me, please pass it along! I promise to post puppy pics once I figure out how. Thanks guys!

Congrats on the new pup and welcome to Dogo! I cant help you about being nervous, cause i've never had a pup my self!

I can help with the cats tho. Usually you should keep the dog with you (we kept Mocha on a leash for a while, so then she new who was in charge and also couldnt chase the cats) and monitor any interactions they have. Also, sometimes it takes a swipe to let the dog know whose in charge. One of our cats, Fritz, is very "alpha male" and so he had to give Mocha a swipe across the face so she wouldnt mess with him anymore. Just comfort the pup and also the cats. You see, our cats weigh 20 lbs a piece, so there was more likely hood of the dog getting hurt then the cats. One lady we talked to said not to keep the dog away from the cats, becuase they will become "suspicious" of the new furball in the house. We lured the cats into the room with cat treats and finished bowls of ice cream they could finish licking out  .

About commuting, are there going to be more people there with you, or just you and the pup? I've heard that whosever lap the puppy rides home on, that will be "thier person" so to speak. Also, lots of toys and things to keep his little mind occupied and remember to stop for potty breaks often.

Welcome to the board!
When you go to pick your pup up it would be a good idea to bring some cleaning supplies just in case he gets car sick  and a leash and coller so you can stop on your way back and let him potty and walk around a bit and if you are going by yourself it would be a good idea to have a kennel to put him in so he wont get under your feet while driving
When my cats met my new pup what I did was put the pup in a kennel and let the cats come around and sniff the pup that way the pup didnt jump on the cats to play and endup getting scratched and then slowly let them have some time together to get to know each other just take it slow and easy and dont let him jump all over the cats but also dont let the cats bully the pup either as time goes on they will get along.
I hope everything goes GREAT on your trip and after you get home
please post pics as soon as ya can!!!

as mentioned, take a leash and collar. you will have to stop on the way home, a puppy cant hold it five hours quite yet. A crate is a very good idea as well, becasue if he gets scared he may try to crawl under your feet. which is not good when you're driving.

as far as the cats, putting the puppy in a crate and letting the cats sniff him will work at first. Later, you could babygate him in, say the kitchen.,
where an accident is less of a problem, or the bathroom, and let them commune through the gate. that's how I have introduced my cats to all my dogs. they decide when they want to commune.
