imported_Kat Posted August 7, 2004 Posted August 7, 2004 some sort of tear a way terrier with chihuahua for sure. He won't grow big at all. Quote
EmmeAndCharley Posted August 7, 2004 Posted August 7, 2004 Without knowing what others have posted... I'm going to guess Chihuahua/Terrier (Westie???) mix. That face looks Chi. The stance, and the TAIL, and the fur look Terrier! LOL What a cutie!!!! I couldn't tell you the age. But, anyway... I am TERRIBLE at guessing puppies... I usually need to see a dog full-grown to guess at what it is. But I LOVE these kinds of posts, just to see if I can guess. heheheh! Congrats on your new baby! Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted August 7, 2004 Posted August 7, 2004 Def i agree with everyone Chi/Terrier for sure!! too cute! how old is hte pup? Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted August 7, 2004 Posted August 7, 2004 My moms and sis went to PETsMART today and asked them, they agreed to the same that it was a Chihuahua mixed with some type of Terrier. Heh I knew what it was before they did :P. Anyway not really sure whats the exact age of the puppy but it's called Mickey. I really don't like it but if that's what my sister wants to call it then I guess im stuck to callin it Mickey. Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted August 7, 2004 Posted August 7, 2004 Can't tell the age by photos, is the pup confident and eating well? 8 weeks is the usual age to leave mum and litter mates the vet may beable to tell you when you get his shots and his check over Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 Well he seems to be eating well and can be verry playful at times. We also got his nails cut at PETsMART for free cus hes a pup, his nails were pretty long. Yeah he's confident alright. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 One problem for sure though is that the pup keeps peeing or poops on the rug im trying my best to show him what he has just done and tell him bad dog and place him on the training mats that are suppose to attract the dog when he has to go to the bathroom. Over time your suppose to move the mat closer to the door and then outside. Any tips on training him on not to do it on the rug or inside the house. Or is he just to young to learn. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 I feel like he will never learn :(, i point to the accident on the rug give him a lil pow pow and place him outside in the backyard. I feel like I was to harsh. I told my mom to throw them away but shes taking it on her friends word that they work cus they work with her friends pup. He's not even peeing on them yet only every once and a while. Also I try to tell him im not in the mood to play by trying not to play with him after hes spilled accidents on the rug, but he doesnt get that either :(. What about taking away his toys he likes to chew on. Thanx K, i'll be trying that. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 First off he is still a BABY! You don't expect a human baby potty train over night so you can't expect a puppy to do the same. You are right the pup doesn't "Get it" why you don't want to play. Dogs puppies in particular have VERY short attention span. If you come home and find an accident rubbing his nose in it does NOTHING. Showing him after the fact does NOTHING. If you catch him in the act you take him outside...YOU GO WITH HIM and when he is done you PRAISE him for finishing outside. If you continue to throw him outside after he has completed an accident he won't figure out what it is you want. You need to keep him with a person at all times...if not then in a crate. When you are with him you need to take him out every 30 minutes...after he eats, plays, wakes up...pretty much anytime he does something take him outside. Most importantly DO NOT STAY MAD AT HIM! He doesn't understand what he has done wrong! Even if you show him the accident or tell him he's bad he has no clue what you are doing those things for. Housebreaking in puppies is difficult! It's a LOT of hard work! Patience is the key. If your mom is dead set on using the puppy pads then I don't know what to tell you. I've only used them when raising a litter of orphaned pups and that was more for padding in their crate and in case their was an accident when I wasn't around to clean it up right away. Also, I hope by Pow Pow you don't mean you HIT your dog. That is a BIG NO NO! Especially with puppies. I don't know how long it's been since you have had a puppy this young but a lot of what you are saying sounds like old fashioned advice. You need to listen to what K and I said and what I'm sure the others will say also. Hitting, showing him his accidents, pointing to the mess, yelling at him, refusing to play...he understands NONE of this. BUT If you get him outside and when he squats you tell him he is the best danged dog on the face of the earth, bounce around, get your voice all high pitched (I swear I do it every time to this day to reinforce things with my younger dogs who have mostly come from bad situations) and BE HAPPY he did it where he was suppose to. It does no good at all to get all ticked off. If I'm guessing right your pup appears to be about 8 weeks. I've had pups appear to be house broken at 10 weeks only to forget it by 14 weeks. If you don't have a crate GET ONE! Okay I'm repeating myself but what I'm saying is VERY important. You need not to be so harsh with him that won't make for a good friend and buddy. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 Yeah i'm ashamed  . PETsMART saids he's about 3 weeks old. He should probably be with his mom but I can't help it now. I hear that putting a clock that ticks under his bed is a good thing, it feels like he is sleeping with the other puppies or mom. The ticking acts like the heart of the other dogs. Yeah I woke up to a pile of poo this morning lol. Quote
courtnek Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 he couldnt survive being away from his mother at three weeks. He would not even be weaned yet. I think PetSmart is wrong on this one. Let's see if I can explain this in a way that will make sense to you. In a pack, the mother "dens" her pups until they are at least 8 weeks old. She nurses them the whole time, and then eventually starts to regurgitate solid food for them to eat. In the "den", the pups sleep in one area, and "go" in another, away from their sleeping area. The mother then eats the solid waste and goes on about caring for them. Gross, I know, but animal nature is much different from humans. Your pup doesnt KNOW that he should not go in your house. To him this is perfectly normal. Yelling at him, or hitting him, will not train him to NOT go. It will only make him fear you. As suggested, get him a crate. Small enough so that all he can do is get up, turn around, and lay back down. Leave a small place to put puppy pads for overnight, away from where his blanket and toys are. By instinct, most dogs wont soil their own bed (there are exceptions, and this is where you come in). A puppy this young needs to go outside, even crated, AT LEAST every two hours. then praised in a high yippy voice when he performs, as was already stated. After every meal (within 5 minutes at this age) after he drinks, after playing for a while. all of these things will make him need to go. You provide the "positive" reinforcement of taking him out and making sure he does it there. Overnight, I would have puppy pads in the crate, and take them outside with you first thing and put them where you want the dog to go. Smell is a big enforcer for housetraining. The crate, if trainng is done properly, will become your and his best friend. As he gets older and can hold it longer, he may still choose to sleep in his "den" at night. During the day, if someone is there to watch him and take him out, you can put cardboard in the crate to make it just big enough that he can stand up and turn around, then take it out at night so he can reach his puppy pads. Good luck to you!! Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 Yeah I don't think he can be 3 weeks either or maybe i'm wrong. He's a cute pup though. He has chewing toys too but he is always chewing on my fingers. I wouldn't do anything to harm him ever. Quote
