itchy Saint Bernard

My 2 year old Saint is scratching himself right at the base of his tail..There seems to be nothing there except a scab now. He also scrathed his chest a little. Could it just be dry skin? How do we fix it? He doesn't really like to bath and stays in the house most of the day, my floor can't take much more fur.

Have you had him checked for fleas???
I would check his diet and see if he is suffering from any food intolerances as well. The skin is the first thing which shows problems of internal illnesses.

If he is scratching at the base of his tail and stomach it could be that his anal glands need squeezed. Sometimes dogs scratch their stomachs when the glands are full as its the closest place that they can reach to relieve the itch.
