I noticed it tonight while i was laying down on the floor with cody.. His pad of his foot, well the top layer of skin is comming off!! i dont knwo what to do! he did get stepped on by a jerk at petsmart yesterday and i ran h im to the vet to do a quick check and everything was fine.. i dont know what to do about this, do i bring him to the vet to get it cut off, or get stiches in it?? I have it wrapped in gauze and then a bandage around it ( like when you give blood ) and i sprayed a little bitter apple so he wouldn't bite it, and he's doing fine with it, not limping or anything, but the second it comes off he goes crazy licking it! what do i do? should i call the vet ASAP in the AM and get him in??

Here's what it looks like

the bronw part is what's comming off.. that is the normal color of it, it's not discolored. the Pink is hte skin under neath it

me showing you, i'm holding htre flap up a little bit..

Ya know I was thinking maybe the inside is swollen because of that ass who stepped on his foot and it's causing the pad to rip like that. :-? Hmm I dunno. :-? Good luck at the vet tomarrow.

I would definitely take him to the vet!! One time we had a dog at the shelter that had a similar problem with the pads of his feet. The vet told us in that paticular case that it could not be sewn up. The vet did give us these wierd drops to put on the foot several times a day to help speed the healing process. I can't remember what the drops were called but they were a brown color and it really helped with the healing- we had to keep the feet really clean in between drops. Hope all goes well with your poor little pooch!!! :(

The same thing happened to Patti. I took her to the vet and they placed ointment on it and wrapped it up. They told me to keep it clean and dry. I had a bootie on her until it heal.
I would take him to the vet to make sure nothing in stuck in it.

I called 2 vets.. 1 said he doesn't need to be seen, just put bagnalm on it until it's healed, there is nothing different that they would do..
and the other one siad bring him in so they can just look at it and then they said they'd just put ointment on it and bandage it.. SO we are getting Bagbalm as the vet suggestined and putting it on his pad and keeping it wrapped. they both said there is nothing they can do or would do differenlty

no limping at all! it's like he doesn't even know it's there until i mess iwth it, changing the bandage and stuff, or i see him licking the bandage trying to get it off, so i spary bitter apple..lol boy does he hate that stuff!!! i'm hoping it's all better soon,

Divine-- will it just fall off with bagbalm or what? it doens' tlook like there's a way to reattach it unless like nuskin or liquid bandage was used..

Our dogs have gotten this a few times, was there any bleeding? Usually for ours, the little flap of pad dries up and falls/gets ripped off, and the skin under quickly becomes like a pad again. It takes around a week most of the time for it to look pretty normal again. The only thing I do is clean it well when I notice it, then keep them off pavement/roads for a while, only cleaning it again if they get really dirty. Bag balm sounds like a good idea to keep the skin supple though.

Make sure that there is nothing under the pad before wrapping- any bits of dirt could cause scarring and an abnormal gait. Allot of mushers I know will actually use super glue to hold the pad down to keep out the dirt. You wouldn't use enough that it would be toxic.

Thanks everyone! I'm going to try the liquid bandaid, we have some of that.. we used it one night when Zoey jumped when i was cuttin her nails and cut it too short. worked great for that. ( now i dremmel for that reason.. )
so i'm going to use it on Cody's foot, keeping it dry wrapped with out the ointment becuase that seems to just keep it gooey...
