delh1 Posted July 17, 2004 Posted July 17, 2004 Sandy, my dog, is a little lab mixed maybe with border terrier. She's 7 years old. we just got a snake and we took it out to show my 4 yr old nephew. Sandy was curious and jumped onto the couch to sniff at the new family member. suddenly she slipped off the edge and onto the floor. the poor dog landed on the back of her legs and then backwards. she didn't cry out but was obviously in great pain. While my mom was looking for the vet's # Sandy started to go into shock. She began to shake and breathe hard. We quickly drove to the animal hospital. the vet said she had stretched the ligament in her back leg. Sandy isnow on medication for pain. the vet said the ligament could still rupture so now she's on bed rest. she is kept in the kitchen so she can't rough house with our puppy she may be older but still acts like a puppy) And she has to be carried downthe steps to the yard. Our biggest concern s that this could result in arthritis. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted July 17, 2004 Posted July 17, 2004 :( I'm so sorry to hear this! The worst is when your dog gets hurt! It is so sad! I hope that there are no long term effects and she heals ASAP! Quote
Shenanigans Posted July 17, 2004 Posted July 17, 2004 poor girl. :( Give her lots of love, bed rest and hugs. It will take some time, but ligaments do often heal fairly nicely. If you're concerned about arthritis at a later time, consider starting her on vitamin C, vitamin E and glucosamine daily now. I started my GSD on those vitamins (and more) when he was five, he's now ten and doesn't show a trace of arthritis though he has played and worked hard through his life. Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted July 18, 2004 Posted July 18, 2004 I hope Sandy is feelling a bit better today Quote
imported_Cassie Posted July 18, 2004 Posted July 18, 2004 Two of my Newfoundlands Gil and Cassie both have had ruptured anterier ligaments. With Cassie she is now a 9 years old and not suffering from any arthritis at all, I give her & Gil daily Glucosamine Chrondritin, MSM, and Yucca root I also give them vitamin C every other day. I also make sure they have plenty of omega 3 fatty acids in their diets from sources such as hemp oil, ground organic flax seeds, canned sardines and canned wild pacific salmon. Every few weeks I take my Newf's off Yucca root and give them boswellia or alfalfa instead. The most important thing right now is to make sure your dog has only short leash walks and to keep him from jumping. Quote
