science_doc Posted July 13, 2004 Posted July 13, 2004 We have a double thick nylon buckle collar that Hailey has been wearing during the day for around 1 year. The other day we noticed it had become incredibly STINKY. I mean like sour dead animal like smell! So we stopped using it for a bit and left it outside to "air" out after washing with dish soap. No good, terrible smell, so we washed it with laundry soap and let it dry. Once again, no go, still VERY SMELLY. Has anyone else noticed this problem with nylon collars and is there a solution besides just buying a new collar. I bought the double think collar so it would last longer, but if they need to be replaced every year I'll just get the single thickness from now on  Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted July 13, 2004 Posted July 13, 2004 An enzyme cleaner or maybe vinegar. Good luck Quote
Carolk9s Posted July 13, 2004 Posted July 13, 2004 Oh yeah, stinky collars. Between the oils from the dog and the godawful stinky things my girls find at the park to roll in, I've smelled my share! I am wondering if an overnight soak in baking soda and water would help? Or perhaps just bury the collar in dry baking soda for a day and see. Quote
SizzleDog Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 What's wrong with buying a new collar? (please remember that this is coming from the freak who buys collars like most people buy potato chips... don't be offended!) Quote
courtnek Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 make a baking soda, water, vinegar (very litle vinegar) paste. Coat the collar with it and let it dry overnight. white vinegar, not red. then run it through your dishwasher or washing machine with nothing but hot water. I do this with both my dogs web collars. they come out really nice. Quote
MajiesMom Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 I doubt a rolled leather collar would get stinky. I stopped leaving a collar on Magic because she's so crazy she'd probably hang herself with it on. It also ruined the hair around her neck and it took over 6 months to grow back. Forget the collar! I just get use to grabbing her by the scruff of the neck when I have too and only use a collar when we go for a walk. Quote
StarFox Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 When zebs collar gets smelly I just toss it in the washing machine on the Gentle cycle in one of thoes mesh laundry bags. It dosn't fray and come out smelling fine. Quote
kendalyn Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 Nylon will always hold onto smells more than any other material I've found. If you want to avoid it in the future you could try a leather coller. I like the rolled kind the best. Nylon collers do look nicer though. Quote
science_doc Posted July 14, 2004 Author Posted July 14, 2004 Once again thanks for all the great suggestions! I was wondering what would happen if I stuck the collar in the wash  That collar smells so bad it's going to need the baking soda/vinegar treatment first for sure! I wish I could afford to buy tons of collars too! My partner and I are graduate students in the biomedical sciences. We have both been in school for about 5 years now and we make very little money. We have 2 cats and the dog and fortunately for our credit card companies we LOVE to spoil our pets anyway. I think they eat, sleep, and play more comfortably than we do. But, with that comes some limits as to what we can spend :( Both of us are terribly excited for graduation and real jobs! Our plan is to start fostering cats and dogs as soon as possible. I'm afraid were going to end up with 10 of each. We definately need to be out of the 2 bedroom apt. before we get anymore......we have more pet hair than carpet! Quote
Carolk9s Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 Hey Science Dog, Do you know if there are any 'dollar' stores in your area? Frequently you can find nylon collars there. I once bought 10 or so and donated them to the local SPCA. Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 I doubt a rolled leather collar would get stinky. they do if they get wet when we go out in the rain- mine do not wear theres in the house and garden Quote
gooeydog Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 Another vote for vinegar here, I soak the collar/leash in 50/50 vinegar/water for about an hr, then drain it and do just water, then hang outside to dry in not-bright sun, and it smells good as new once dry. Baking soda would probably work well too, or oxyclean even. And, another note, even single ply collars will start to stink, so either way, you're bound to have smelly collars  Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted July 15, 2004 Posted July 15, 2004 I'm trying my hardest to hold off from buying Coal a new collar! It doesn't smell, he's had it almost a year, it's just stained really bad! And he just got a new leash so the new bright blue leash does NOT match his dirty old faded blue collar  But I've kept it from smelling by washing it every time i wash him, or it gets dirty in anyway. I've done this with my dogs for years now and not once have had to buy a new collar because it smelled!! :D What I do is when he had his bath, I take it off and throw it into the sink in water and soap. If it's REALLY dirty, I lather it in the soap first and then let it soak like that. It soaks until Coal is out and has been groomed, and then usually when I clean the bathroom (which usually is way past when Coal has been groomed  ) I scrub it, rinse it, and hang it up to dry for the night :D Works for me, and I've never had a collar smell  Quote
Horsefeathers! Posted July 15, 2004 Posted July 15, 2004 Carolk9s napisaĆ(a):Hey Science Dog, Do you know if there are any 'dollar' stores in your area? Frequently you can find nylon collars there. I once bought 10 or so and donated them to the local SPCA. Dollar Tree collars!! I have about 100 of 'em (seriously)! They're really neat with pawprint designs and in different colors and sizes. They also have matching leashes. $1 each. It makes it hurt a lot less to pay a buck for them and then just ditch them when you need to. I buy those collars and leashes by the handful every time they have them. SD, just go get yourself a handful of $1 collars! Changing out tags is no big deal. I put the tags on one of those brightly colored spring clips (usually used as a key ring... three for a buck at the Dollar Tree!) and just clip them to the collar ring. Ba da bing, ba da boom, tags off one collar and onto the next without all that diddling around. Oh (for anyone interested), they have really nice ceramic dishwasher safe dog and cat bowls in there, too! $1 a piece. I LOVE the Dollar Tree. :iloveyou: Quote
