courtnek Posted July 6, 2004 Posted July 6, 2004 its been living under my shed. Laurel has been trying to dig it out...Free doesnt dig. I covered the hole to the shed with a crate. Laurel has been trying to find ways around it. something happened, either it came out on its own, or Laurel finally scared it out digging, but Free showed up with it in her jaws. at the back door. very dead. *sigh* I couldnt yell at her, she handed it to me, looking very proud. I cant yell at her for doing what dogs do. she brought prey home, as any good canine should. and gave it to her alpha...I was hoping it would escape the yard and go elsewhere. guess not...hopefully next year they wont come back... *sigh*...   Quote

Did you check for babies (under the shed or in the pouch)? I have a friend who stops when he sees roadkill possum this time of year and he manages to salvage and foster lots of surviving babies. Not that there is any particular possum shortage, but it is awful to think of the babies starving to death if it could be prevented. primrose Quote
imported_Cassie Posted July 6, 2004 Posted July 6, 2004 Poor little Opossum, you are right...you can't punish a dog for what comes natural to it. What a nice gesture to bring food back to you  my Rottie Athena did this to me once...we have alot of people who snare rabbits (I HATE SNARES! ) she tore the snare from the trees it was attached to and brought the rabbit to me...almost a "look what I got for us later!!!" I made her drop the rabbit, checked to make sure it was dead (with the tip of my boot) and then dug a hole and buried it. We had a horrible disease in my area last winter which was spread by touching wild rabbits...a few men who snare rabbits had contracted it. I can't exactly remember what it was called...but, if I can do I will post it...I "think" it was some sort of fungal or bacterial disease. Did you check for babies (under the shed or in the pouch)? I have a friend who stops when he sees roadkill possum this time of year and he manages to salvage and foster lots of surviving babies That is a good suggestion primrose. Opossums usually carry their babies in their pouch (like a kangaroo) for about 2 months...its kinda neat to think that an entire Opossum litter can fit into teaspoon. Quote
courtnek Posted July 7, 2004 Author Posted July 7, 2004 I checked this morning. with a flashlight, since you cant see anything under there. They're all gone. I actually think this one was a baby, it was very small, so the whole nine yards may have moved off after that. this one may have wandered out of the den and gotten caught. I checked Free over, no bites, some of the possums blood got on her but I washed it off. Laurel flushed it, and had nothing on her at all. typical foxhound. flushes and lets the "hunter" do the rest. *sigh* I hope they dont came back next year/ Maybe now they'll think the shed is too dangerous. I'm gonna fill in the hole and surround the shed with bricks. Maybe that'll stop them digging under. Quote
