Carolk9s Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 Jesse is having big trouble using the existing doggie door now, he is getting weaker in the rear. He used to be able to simply hop through it, some days he can still do so but is having more and more trouble with it. I am wondering if replacing it with a bigger door will make it easier for him. While I am out of work, not a big deal as I let him in and out. I DO hope to go back to work soon and am worried sick about him. The one I have is a large, I am thinking of putting in an extra large. The flap opening is 23 inches top to bottom for the x-large, the current one is about 15. Anyone have a PetSafe Ultimate Doggie Door? If so, any thoughts on it? Quote
MajiesMom Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 Aww poor thing. Sorry I don't have a doggie door so I can't help you out. I don't know how yours is set up but maybe you can put a little step to it or ramp? At our last house Magic made her own doggie door by jumping threw the screen of the door. Doggie doors and Majies don't mix so we don't have one anymore. Quote
Horsefeathers! Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 I don't have a doggie door, either, so can't help there. I do have a question about them in general, though. Are they designed so they can be locked or secured from the inside? Say like you don't want your dogs going in and out unattended when no one is home (more like don't want neighborhood thugs crawling in when no one's home)? Quote
kendalyn Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 What about making him ramps on either side of the door? That way he doesn't have to jump at all. He could just walk out. Quote
Carolk9s Posted June 23, 2004 Author Posted June 23, 2004 The door I am about to buy has a steel plate that locks into place for when I am away from home with the dogs. The one I currently have has a skimpy piece of pressboard that is about useless. Ramps would not work for two reasons. Any ramps would prevent me from opening the door itself. Also, with the current door, a ramp would raise the dogs too high and they would have to 'slink' down through the opening. I do have a platform on the back step so that both inside and outside are level with each other. The new door, with it's taller and wider opening, shoud allow him to basically step through. The bottom edge will only be about 4-5 inches up from the floor and with 23 inches of flap area, I am hoping it will solve the problem. I talked to my brother, he is coming down this Saturday to install the new door and install carpet in my hallway, again for Jesse's benefit. Geez he's a good brother, I'll be buying him a steak dinner! Quote
Horsefeathers! Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 Better make it steak and shrimp. What a nice guy! I hope it works out well for Jesse. :bigok: Quote
kendalyn Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 Any ramps would prevent me from opening the door itself. DUH!! What was I thinking! Quote
Horsefeathers! Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 Why, you were just thinking Carol would use the doggie door to enter and exit herself. Perfectly logical, I think... 8) :P Quote

Perfectly logical, I think... 8) :P You have no idea how close you are! I went out back through the kitchen door, tried to come back in through the laundry room, realized the door was locked, reached through the doggie door and unlocked it to let myself in. My niece, when she was 10, crawled through it once. Do I worry that someone could come into my house? A little, if the dogs are here, I hope no one would be that stupid. If the dogs are with me, I have an inner door between the laundry room and the rest of the house that is deadbolted. Quote
Malamum Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 I use our doggy door all the time. If one of us forgets our keys - through the doggy door we go. The other day I actually used it to put the rubbish out. Our bin is outside the door that has the doggy door installed but it was locked so instead of going to get the key I just took myself and the rubbish through the doggy door. Indy came running up to see what I was doing and tried to get his head through at the same time and looked at me as if to say "this is my door - use your own" Quote
courtnek Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 here it wouldnt be safe to have one, and also, that would mean I would have to remove the storm door, which would make Chicago winters very unpleasant. but if you put it closer to the floor, it will probably make it easier for your pup to get out. step over it instead of hopping as it were. definitely a good din for brother!! Quote
