Guest Anonymous Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 It's been really hot here the last few days, i wanna coolt he dogs off by letting th em play int he water from the hose.. Well Cody runs and hides under the patio table and Zoey runs laps AWAY from the water.... how can i show them it's ok ? if i get a pool will it be a waste with them ? I have AC but only in 1 room and that is where they stay, but i'd love for htem to play in the water, they LOVE to swim int he lakes and stuff.. so maybe start out with a pool? i had the sprinkler on and threw the ball around for them but they run get it , and hide again ?? courtnek Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 some dogs dont like the sprinkler. My Lab loves it, bites at the water as it comes out, but the hound wont go near it. If they both like to swim, maybe a mid size kiddie pool would be the way to go. just something they can lay down in. You can see Free likes hers...     Quote
Cairn6 Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 Some dogs just don't like water but if yours swims at other times I am sure you could get them used to a kiddie pool. Toto has one he loves it. Before we moved we had a big pool in the backyard and he and Mandy would jump in all the time from the side. I got him a dog life jacket to keep him floating it was cute. Quote
mydogroxy Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 roxy is afraid of the hose too, but she does have a kiddie pool that she uses. some dogs just don't like the idea of freezing water shooting at them, whereas a pool is a little less assaulting. Quote
MajiesMom Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 I suppose every dog is different. Magic loves the garden hose, she loves spray bottles so they don't work for disipline. :-? She was afraid of the Lake at the cottage at first then someone threw her in the water  but after that she loved it and all she does is swim in the Lake now. She doesn't like baths but gets into the bath tub when I tell her too and once I bought her a kiddie pool but she would not get in it and only used it as a big water dish. Oh and she doesn't like to go out in the rain unless we're going for a walk but once she's already wet then she doesn't care anymore. She is crazy about the water hose, she trys to attack it  - here's a pic Quote
Cairn6 Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 Mine attacks the hose too. We punctured a couple of them over the years. He's small but has very large teeth. :o Quote
pLaurent Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 I"ve been wondering the same thing (getting kiddy pool) My dog loves to wade in streams and ponds, but only up to her belly. She avoids the hose at all costs, and hates having a bath. I think some dogs like the water when it's their choice whether or not to go in. I just hate to buy a pool for nothing! Quote
courtnek Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 do you have "dollar stores" by you? I got free's pool for 4 bucks! at a dollar store. it's cheap plastic and wont hold up to much, but good enough for the dog to play in and lay down in. Avoid the inflatable ones, they pop them. damn dogs popped my air mattress!!! Quote
JackieMaya Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 Maya is terrified of the hose, but she LOVES splashing around in the doggie pool. I think her former owner may have turned the hose on her to shut her up when she would bark. When I take out the hose, she gets as far away from it as she can, but once it's in the pool and the water is running, she'll leap right into the pool and have a blast. Here is the kiddie pool I got at Wal-Mart. It's big enough that both Jackie and Maya can lie down in there at the same time. Quote
Cairn6 Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 Cute picture!! They look like they are having a great time. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 AHHHH i get it now.. you guys made me remeber WAY back when Zoey was a pup... when her and Cody would get really mouthy druing play time .. and afew other times i dont remeber what for we used a spray bottle on them.. that would explain why she doesnt' like it! so i won't force her, i will check out the dollar store tomororw or head to walmart and get on there! Thanks guys! Quote
StarFox Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004  I think I have an opposite dog. He loves drinking out of the hose, hates being washed by it. Loves being squirted in the face with a squirt gun (as punishment),hates running water (bath tub, etc). Steps in mud puddles (and only MUD puddles) but walkes around/jumps over any water that is stagnant on the concrete. Loves the rain hates the ocean. Quote
imported_Kat Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 LOL DAL try treating them with the hose nearby so they know that they aren't being punished. Dogs have fantastic memories  Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 LOL mel poor Z lol he's a little confused... good advice kat :) maybe if they see me and justin playin int ithey will think its ok Quote
halecjaclyn Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 4 out of our 5 loooooove the sprinkler, that sounds like a disclaimer, lol. We tried the kiddie pool as well, but they just think it's a giant water bowl. Quote
courtnek Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 Alex thought it was a giant water bowl...Free we coax into it with her favorite ball. she had to get in the pool to bring it out, and oncein realized she liked it. Laurel? Couldnt care less. She likes to lay under the blue spruce and bring all the wood chips in stuck to her fur....     Quote
