Guest Anonymous Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 Alright!! :D I'm going camping with a bunch of buddies at the end of the month, it's a birthday bash, cuz like four of us have our birthday in July, and so we're celebrating it all at once, PLUS Canada Day! (eh? :D ) 8) So I asked Thaney if she minded if I brought Coal. It's mainly for Thaney and Mandi, they started it all, and i know Mandi won't mind, she's probably bring her dogs  Thaney said that it'd be cool. Next stop, seeing if Jared would allow him in his truck :o YOu see, Jared isn't exactly the bestest buds with Coal anymore. Coal has very little manners with strangers, and people he doesn't see often (we've been working on it, and he's getitn a LITTLE better), and ESPECIALLY Jared. Jared played with him a lot when he was a puppy, and he stayed the night there too because I needed a rest from the little bugger  But once he got bigger and over powering, Jared started not liking him so much. So we've been working on that, and have seen improvement today! Got him to sit a couple times for Jared to pet him, but other then that he just jumped all over him :-? SO long story short, I had to ask Jared's permission to let Coal in his truck... this is how our conversation went... Me: one thing I wanted to ask you... cuz I looove you, and yer the bestest boyfriend in the whole wide world *bats eyes* Jared: what Me: umm... if yer goin camping or whatever, cuz like I was talkin to Thaney and she said you said you'd be able to make it the first day for sure or whatever cuz work wise, and I was woooondering if you'd be so ever kind to bring Coal in the back of yer truck, even though dad spoils him and lets him sit in the cab haha cuz i wana bring him out there cuz it'd be really good for him, cuz he's so rude around people, he needs to be around them more and learn manners if not, Thaney said that she could use their truck to bring him, but it'd prolly be easier to just bring him in yers, if you'll allow it... cuz you know, your the best Jared: um...sure Me: THANKS! :buzi:   Oh yeah, I rule 8) SO yay! I can't wait! Is there anything I really need to know about taking him besides bringing food and such essentials like that for him  Quote
kendalyn Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 It depends on where you're going camping. If it's an actual campground with rules and stuff you might want to find out what their campground rules for dogs are. Sometimes they are so restrictive I think it's better to leave the dog home. I hate going to those places though... If it's not in an official campground than your options are greater. But unless his recall is very good I would keep him on leash most of the time. You're probably safe to let him off in the evening while you're hanging around the campfire. Most dogs will stick around in that type of situation, but only you know your dog. Quote
imported_Kat Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 Camping is alwas fun but hey dogs come before boyfriends and what I told Sander as soon as we met was Love me, and you have to love my dogs. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 I always take my dog camping. I like to take doggy mosquito repellent with me (since I don't give her heartworm meds)..and plus she won't be so darn itchy and bumpy when she gets back. Also, don't forget a first aid kit. Bandages, disinfectant, hydrogen peroxide, scissors, tweezers, blankets and I would suggest taking your own water. Last time i went they had a warning..said that you should boil the water and stuff because they were having some parasite problems. You don't want your dog coming home sick. Be careful for ticks, skunks and other small animals. Other than that..have a blast :) Quote
courtnek Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 Shara, you're gonna have to teach me how to do that. Batting lashes and feminine wiles dont come naturally to me....my take would have been "we take the dog or I dont go...."       Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 Kat, I don't want Jared to LOVE Coal. Well it would be nice, but he doesn't have to. He's a cat person actually (I know I know, you're all thinking now "What are you doing with him?!" :o  ), so I don't expect him to love Coal. I just expect Coal to behave himself around Jared  Thanks kendalyn, I never even thought about the rules! Thaney and Mandi are going to book the campsites, and still have to talk to "Super Dave". They've been trying to get ahold of him for ages, but it's almost impossible  I think Mandi is biking out there soon (she's so active, I hate her    ), so she's going to try and talk to him. I will ask her to ask about the doggie rules  Although I think the only major one is to keep your dog at your campsite, and pick up after them if they are not relieving theirselves in the bushes. I brought Hazel there a few times, as well as a Chi I had, and they were kept on leash but we weren't staying there camping, it was just a day thing. But there was no problems. PBL - Thanks! I'll see what I can do for a First Aid kit... It's hard to get a lota suplies around here though :-? I can check the drug store, but I can't remember ever seeing first aid stuff there other than people bandages and such, but I'll check! We have some animal bug dope, so I will take that, thanks! :D There's west Nile going around Canada right now, and while it's not in our town, I don't want to take any chances  As for ticks and skunks, we really don't get a lot of parasites like ticks around here. There ARE some, but it's hard for your dog to get them from just camping if they are with you  And I'd rather not think about it really, Ticks are my number one fear :o :o ANYTHING that can crawl under your skin, ugh I just freak out. I'm getting dizzy and my stomach is churning just thinking about it :o And Skunks are a bit rare around here as well unless you go treking WAY out into the bush, and even then they tend to be hidden. I'd be more worried about porcipines (sp?) I've seen a few around my place here, and my neighbor's old dog got smacked in the face by one :-? But I don't plan on wandering through the bushes, if I end up going for a walk I'll probably stick to the trails  The one thing I'm probably most concerned about is sleeping  I know our tent gets REALLY hot by morning time, and I had my last dog sleeping in there with me before and I'd end up getting woken up in the morning from her breathing and i'd get freaked she was going to die of heat stroke :o Our tent has this front flap thingy, almost like a little "boot room" which I think I'll keep him in. Not as hot as the tent, yet still warm for the night. But knowing Coal he'll probably cry  Besides the heat, I don't think they'll be room in the tent  There will be Me, Jared, Jon (my cuz), Thaney (his girlfriend and my best friend), Warron, Dustin, and Aaron all in there. I know I know, two girls and all those boys :o :o But there's another tent with the others in it, which will be all girls and one boy   All the ones in the tent I'll be in dont' exactlly get along with the others, well those guys anyway :o So we have no other choice  I can't wait though, it should be fun! :D Quote

Dont' give me that look!" lol he just can't resist it, works like charm :evilbat: And if that doesn't work, the stutter alway does  Mainly cuz it's irritating haha, I go "puh-puh-puh-leeese??? *puppy eyes* If you don't I might de- de- de- de- develope a stu-st-stu- STUTTER!!" with more puppy eyes  Quote

Guest Anonymous Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 Hazel you're lucky you guys don't have alot of skunks..here they're everywhere...I was at my boyfriend's house and I was ready to leave, opening the front door...right on the steps was a skunk..OMIGOD I ran back into the house...my pit was with me and she saw it from inside...thank GOD I closed the door in time... She already got sprayed once by grabbing one by the tail and swinging it around in a circle like a rope lol....ok it wasn't really funny though cuz I had to wash her with tomatoes and toothpaste for a few days :x Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 14, 2004 Posted June 14, 2004 Just wanted to add: One item that I find REALLY helpful on a camping trip with dogs: Neon glow-in-the-dark snap lights. :D We get them in thin snaps (the bracelet style that people sometimes wear to clubs/parties/concerts) and join 2 to go around our dogs' necks. They really help to set my mind at ease since I'm usually worried that they'll go chasing something & I won't be able to see where they are in the dark. But with their glow 'necklace', we can spot them a mile away. :) Have fun! :bday: Quote

imported_Kat Posted June 14, 2004 Posted June 14, 2004 Very good point Bubblez. :D I have a flashy light collar for Meg when are out at night or when we go to campsites with dog shows and they are invaluable I have to say along with the flashy ball :P Quote
