It’s Just a Dog

She sits with swelled eyes peering through the glass at you,
Her bowls are empty, and her bedding soiled.
Her muzzle is graying, and she’s not exactly brand new,
But she’s too old to scamper, and looks like for days she has toiled.

She once ran with a full spirit and health, happy and having fun.
She once wasn’t “just a dog” she was once not “too old”.
She remembers curling up with her friend under the warm sun.
And remembers him whispering “I will never let you feel cold”.

But those days are over, and the time had then came,
When her friend left her, and with common folk to care for her.
They didn’t even treat her as equal; she felt nothing would ever be the same.
No one was there to speak softly in her ear, no one to even stroke her fur.

“It’s just a dog” The old man grunted, “leave It outside”
And thrown outside she was, in the wind and rain,
Not a friend in sight, and no one to confide.
A broken porch to sleep under, and a broken heart in constant pain.

One day her heart gave out while she ran excitedly at the children at play,
“BAD DOG” screamed the old woman, running out with a magazine in one hand,
“Shut up you stupid dog!” She would scream and say.
Startled the dog turned to run, but the pain was too much, she sunk down, and in the mud did land.

When the woman told her husband, he grunted and replied,
“It’s just a dog,” he said, “throw it out back”.
No more sticky hands, and dirty food, warm summer days and that yearly car ride.
Together the old man and woman haled the limp-body over the fence, and tossed it about like a used sack.

But she was not dead; her time was not yet up,
And was about to get a lucky second chance.
And a hope that one day she might live the life she had as a pup.
For along came a man dressed in long black pants.

He bent to the lifeless body and pushed a hand against her chest,
A sad whimper escaped, and out came a gust of a single light breath,
A breath which was cold and fresh out of death.
This man was special, and would never say "It's just a dog" like the rest.

He carried her to a car, and gently laid her in the back seat,
He drove her as fast as he could, to the specially designed animal hospital.
The special doctor checked her all over, every square inch, even her worn out feet.
She finally came too and was frightened by the stranger, and with embarrassment left on his table piddle.

It took some time for her to trust the human hand again,
And now she resides a your local "Pet Co"
Watching puppies come and go, but she has to stay because she's the age of ten.
She watched and waited every day for her boy to come, but he never did show.

So when you head into your next pet store, looking for the perfect dog,
Please look past those puppies, which are apt to find a home soon,
And instead look deep into those pleading eyes, look past their glossy surface, look past the fog,
Her coat is tarnished, graying in some spots, and her ears are out of tune,

But if you sit with her she’ll listen to you through unspoken word,
She’ll connect herself straight into your heart,
She will cure everything in your world that is absurd,
And make sure that the two of you never part.
