kendalyn Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 How many of you guys take your dog into stores where they do not specifically allow dogs? I've been trying it and so far haven't had any problems :-) Rite-Aid, Office Max, Hallmark, and Target have all either not cared or not noticed that I was shopping with Buck! 8) I only bring him into the stores when it is not busy and I keep him right next to me all the time. He heels very well now and he doesn't bother anything so I figure it's ok until I get asked to leave. So far no one has said anything. And of course I don't take him into restaurants or grocery stores. Does anyone else do this? Have you ever been asked to leave an establishment? Quote
Sharpeigirl Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 I've seen dogs in Home Depot & Lowes all the time, I guess it's not a problem there, but I've never tried it except at petco & petsmart Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 Gladis has been in most shops but not food ones, Paddy is unpredictable he could lift his leg so I DO NOT RISK IT Quote
courtnek Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 I've never tried it either. Most of the stores have signs that say "no pets" on the entrances anyway, but the big Menard's and Home Depot's...hmmm....they dont have any signs. Maybe I'll try it. The worst they could do is tell me to leave.... I always wanted to train Freebee to act like a seeing eye dog, and walk in with sunglasses with her leading me, just for fun. I was also amazed at high small a 90 lb. yellow Lab can curl up. There was one on the plane last trip to Portland. Owner was blind. He managed to curl up small enough to completely fit in the bulkhead portion of the plane, which is up near the front. I was amazed. They let them on the plane first, and people were calling and talking to the dog, and in typical training, he ignored everyone. didnt get up, just lifted his head and wagged his tail a little bit. One lady actually complained!! wanted to know why THAT dog could come on the plane, but her's couldnt. She was told this was a guide dog, by Federal law they cannot be kept out of anywhere the owner can go. Her comment? "So WHAT? It's still a DOG....." duh.....      Quote
imported_Kat Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK are very strict. The only shops that Meg comes into are the pet shops. We would get our asses kicked out in any other type of shop! Quote
Carolk9s Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 All 3 of my dogs have been to Home Depot, Candy was the 'worst' behaved, she wanted to visit EVERYONE she saw! I quietly and calmly reminded her to stay close to me and all was well. One lady shopper did stop to greet her, Candy was in heaven. Oh, each one has gone individually, I'd never even consider taking more than one at a time! Jesse has made some eyes pop but no one has objected or shown actual fear. I've taken Jesse into Blockbuster video a couple of times. I always asked first if it was ok. Jesse is a big, black, longhaired dog and to some he looks like a wolf, didn't want anyone freaking out because he was with me. I also did not want anyone to think in error that he is a service dog and therefore allowed special priviledges. I kept him snug by my side as to avoid any chance of him lifting his leg. Of course Jesse is the 'gentleman Belgian' and was good as gold. One little girl in there was so thrilled to meet him, after a few minutes of being petted, he looked at me and begged for us to move on! All of my dogs have also visited the tobacco shop nearby, the owners are dog lovers themselves and make such a fuss over my dogs it's hard to get out! Quote
Horsefeathers! Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 I was told that Home Depot is supposed to have a corporate pet friendly policy. I know around here, most Home Depots are right next to a PetsMart, anyway. I take my dogs into virtually anywhere. I figure the worst that can happen is that we be asked to leave, but it very rarely happens. If it's not a grocery store or a restaurant, I'll take mine with me. Peanut is going to the movie theater with us later this afternoon. 8) Quote
courtnek Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 I wonder if Home Depot and PetSmart are affiliated? Like Jewel and Osco? Quote
courtnek Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 wow, bummer. Illinois is not "clickable"....I wonder if that means there arent any place other than pet stores here that allow pets? :( Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 I take Cody every where with me. lol he's been in all the stores i have... But then again no one says anything becuase I have a service vest for him that say's i am deaf, and people usually think he's in training.. Quote
Phez718 Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 Ok, I'm a lurker  But I just had to comment on this thread... I never knew people took their dogs places like that. If I did that I would probably be told to leave and looked at as a stupid kid(15). I might try it one day though... :) Quote
kendalyn Posted June 7, 2004 Author Posted June 7, 2004 I've thought about getting Buck a vest or something so he looks more official. I realize it's kind of cheating but he's so well behaved in the stores it's almost a shame not to bring him with me! People will probably be more apt not to say anything if they think he's "special". Is there some kind of certificate you can get your dog that says officially they can be everywhere with you? I mean, without him having to actually be a real service dog. If there isn't, I think there should be. How many dogs do you bring with you HF? Do you bring the larger ones, or just the small ones? Quote

Peanut (the Toy Poodle) and Devin (Lhasa) go with me EVERYWHERE regardless of who else is with me. Perry & Pauly (Standard Poodles) go with me a lot as well. It really depends on where I'm going. I've been taking Rocco (Doberman) lots of places, too, but I don't take Perry & Pauly when he goes. There are only so many I can handle at a time and it takes a LOT to get Rocco in and out of the car and able to walk around places. Peanut & Devin are wonderful, though, and can happily be carried, walked on leash, or ride around in a shopping cart depending on where we are :) . Pauly & Perry are feeling a bit ripped off as they aren't getting to travel as much as before. Still, at any given time, there are at least two dogs with me. The rest of The Gang virtually never goes anywhere with me. They are dogs who'd prefer to stay home and don't enjoy traveling, or whose manners can't always be counted on  . Well, except my poor beloved Tucker (Lab). His hips are so bad and it's so hard for him to get in and out of the car repeatedly and do a lot of walking, so I don't take him much. Shame because he is a certified therapy dog. :( Quote
gooeydog Posted June 7, 2004 Posted June 7, 2004 I take Annie up to the little neighborhood store a lot, I carry her in, and they give me cheese to give her, she LOVES visiting the store, and as soon as she realizes where we're going, she starts trying to haul me along faster. Other than that, pretty much the only places we take any of them into now are the petstores, because a lot of stores around ehre aren't too dog friendly, so I don't usually bother to ask since I really don't go many places anyway. In the city (about 1/2 hr from us), there are some areas that are VERY dog friendly, and even have dog biscuits in their stores to treat your dogs as you shop, and signs welcoming them, so one day when I get around to getting my license, I'm going to have to take them up there to check it out. Guest Anonymous Posted June 7, 2004 Posted June 7, 2004 I think you have to have thenm cedrified to be a service dog if you want them to get certififed, i do not think they certify just for being a good dog. Although CGC is a certifablem but not sure you can take them in tot he stores with a vest on  Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 7, 2004 Posted June 7, 2004 Funny this thread's been started cuz I've been thinking a lot about this lately! :D I use to take Coal into the store down the road suspenders, when he was a puppy, this place carries food though, but they have a border collie who's quite often in there. Since he got bigger I haven't though, I'm quite frankly too scared to ask  plus I know he'd snatch something off the shelf   But I've been taking him into town a lot more, his training has advanced to more distractions  And I was thinking about taking him into Fields or something  However I practiclly boycott that store because everything there sucks, is realy useless, or falls apart :-? But that and "Northern" are the only stores I can think of in this town which don't cary food  And I bet NO ONE here has heard of either! LOL We have like NO huge stores like Home Depot though :-? But I think Next weekend I'll take Coal into town, and let ya'll know what i Get away with  I use to get Hazel to open doors that had the button on them for people in wheelchairs  Quote
Horsefeathers! Posted June 7, 2004 Posted June 7, 2004 What you have to do is go in there like you and the dog both belong there. Don't ask anyone anything about permission to be there. Don't make eye contact and don't look guilty. Don't act nervous. When I take mine into stores, I just always "assume" it's perfectly acceptable and normal unless otherwise told so. I act as if everyone takes their dog to the store. Try it. The worst thing that can happen is they say no dogs allowed. They can't eat you. Quote
StarFox Posted June 7, 2004 Posted June 7, 2004 I've only taken Zebra to Petsmar, 3 dog bakery, and a outdoor resteraunt that caters to dogs. I wish I could take him more places but so many places have the "No dogs allowed" signs on there stores. I have been tempted to take him to Home depot but there is always broken glass and nails in there parking lot and I wouldn't want to risk him stepping on anything. I went threw that list of dog freindly stores and had to laugh when I saw "Pottery Barn" on there...taking a dog into that store would be like letting a bull into a china shop. Quote

Carolk9s Posted June 7, 2004 Posted June 7, 2004 This is not directed at anyone here but a carryover from another list that had a similar topic. PLEASE do not try to pass your dog off as a service dog. The people who NEED their dogs with them have fought long and hard to be allowed to bring their dogs into places that are normally off limits. If anyone were to indicate their dog is a service dog when it is not, and for some strange reason that dog misbehaved, it could rock the boat for those who truly need their dogs with them. There was a thread on this other list regarding Home Depot planning on banning dogs, apparently a contractor brought his dog along, the dog barked, ran around some, and scared some people, and Home Depot may have to ban dogs from their places of business. Legally they cannot ban service dogs at this time but still, no sense in making them think about it. Quote

Ok i take that directly applied to me for i said on this post that i have a vest for Cody.my dog behaves ectremely well out in public, and he has his service vest on beucase it was the only thing i could find that would help people beware that he was deaf, as when he was a puppy and cute adn fluffy everyone would come up and just start pating him and they were startiling him, so we got the vest so now people see it and ask if they can pet him, if people ask me if he is a service dog i say "no, he's deaf, and this is for his own saftey so people don't startle him" Cody's been in to target, old navy, michales, home depot,Kmart Sears, THE Mall.. and anyone that ask i tell them. so i am NOT passing my dog off as a service dog, as i am honest and upfront if people ask me I tellt hem, And Cody has been trained to walk along the wheel chair of the little girl that i Babysit as he detects her Seizures, so we are out, with her family YES Cody comes along, and is a service dog to Makenna. I know you siad it was not directed to anyone, but i take it as an insult becuase i'm the only one on here who has said i have a service vest for my dog.  Quote

Carolk9s Posted June 7, 2004 Posted June 7, 2004 No DAL, I read your post and completely understood exactly what you had said. I also happen to agree with Cody wearing a vest to indicate HE is deaf. It was NOT directed at you or anyone else specifically. I simply posted that to forestall anyone perhaps thinking that passing a dog off as a service dog was a workable idea. While I admit I am not the most diplomatic person around, if I have something to say to someone, I will come right out and say it. I may pm them, or I might say it publicly, but I do NOT beat around the bush. I am sorry you chose to believe I was directing my post to you, not the case. Quote
