StarFox Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 Today I was thinking about what I would do with Zebra and our rabbit Nibbles when they pass on. I do not want to just leave them at the vet because i'd be so affraid that Iams would use them as food. My parents suggested a pet cemetery or cremation. Cremation is an interesting idea because you can scatter the ashes but I was always creeped out with the idea of having ashes of a beloved one in the house. I like the idea of burrial though. Anwyas I was just interested to know if anyone has done this or has considered it? Here is an example. http://www.bubbling-well.com/ Quote
TDG Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 know about this one? :) http://www.lapetcemetery.com i wouldn't want to let my dead pets go to a landfill or rendering facility either. so far all of them are buried somewhere on family property, but now that i live in L.A. that's not really an option anymore. when my current pets die, i will have them cremated, sealed into an urn and will keep them at home. i know i'm not going to live here forever and it would be sad to leave them behind buried somewhere. sarahmyjoy Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 we had to have our rotti put down when she was 11 years old and that was one thing we had thought about ... do we bring her home and put her to rest or something else. well the vet had a service where they creamated them and a beautiful spot where they scattered the ashes or you could take them and scatter them if you liked. they had seats around and you could go and visit with your loved pet anytime you wanted. that is what we did. kendalyn Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 There is a pet cemetary here. It seems nice but I would never bury one of my animals there. All my pets are buried in the backyard. I guess if I couldn't do that though I would go with cremation. Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 Both Poppy, Alice and our cat Charley were chemated but we did not ask for the ashes back they were scatterd in the pet cemtrey Quote
marion Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 We had Jasmine cremated and have her ashes on the landing windowsill with a rose at the side. This was 6 years ago, I have been thinking of burying them on the heath where she always walked but himself doesn't want to. Quote
behle Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 My rottie Max was cremated and his ashes are sealed in a decorative wooden box that I have in my living room. Maybe I will eventually scatter his ashes out in our woods in a special clearing we have, but I'm not ready yet... :( Quote
courtnek Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 Mine have all been cremated. I have the ashes of my first dog and cat, because of unusual circumstances. the rest I scattered in places they loved to go for walks, or to play. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted May 24, 2004 Posted May 24, 2004 There is a Pet Cemetery in my town. It's a really nice place...the headstones have some of the most beautiful passages on them. The owners of the Cemetery put artificial flowers on the gravesites every week. It looks very well cared for, very green with a lot of trees. I believe I remember a horse and some birds being laid to rest there as well. There is a special area for both dogs and cats. I'm not sure about the costs, but I'd love to have Felony put to rest there once the time comes. My cats, too. Here's the link if anyone is interested in taking a look. It's in Huntington Beach, CA. There may be even nicer cemeteries for pets in less populous cities, but this one is close to us. Hope the link shows up; I'm new at this  http://www.phaseonewebsitedesign.com/clients/sb.html Quote
mnp13 Posted May 24, 2004 Posted May 24, 2004 My cat, Mordred was my first (and only) pet who died since I bought my home. I didn't think I should continue to bury my pets at my parent's house because I'm an 'adult' now, but I couldn't stomach the thought of burying Mordred in my yard and then someday selling the house. What if someone dug him up by mistake and was disrespectful to his remains? I had an individual cremation, and I put a bit of all of my pets hair and a few of his favorite toys with him. His ashes are in my living room right now, but I plan to seal them in a small copper container and bury it under a memorial stone in my garden. That way, when I move he can come with me. He was the world's most annyoing cat, but I miss every day.... Michelle Quote

Unusual circumstances? If it's hard to talk about I understand... sorry! I have told this story before, but it may have been before you joined. My first dog was a Golden, the light of my life. He was everything everyone would want a dog to be. Took me through rough teenage years, and into adulthood. When I moved out, I took Taurus with me. I then got a cat, a shorthaired black evil minded thing, with amber eyes, who took to Taurus almost instantly. His name was Isis. Taurus was 9 when I got Isis. they bonded. I have a picture of Taurus with his paw over Isis' back, keeping him warm and protecting him. When Taurus was 13, he passed on. I had hm cremated and brought his ashes home. I came home from work, and found that Isis had taken the urn off the bookshelf in my room. and rolled it down the stairs, and was sleeping next to it. Same as he slept next to taurus every night. No matter where I put that urn, Isis would find it (this was a cat who could open any cabinet/door/whatever ever invented) Eventually I gave up trying to protect the urn, and bought a kitty bed, and put the urn in it. Isis slept with that urn unti he too, died. I had him cremated as well, and have urns with both their ashes, on the same bookcase headboard in my room. Quote

It's a lot cheaper if you let them 'mix' with other animals and be scattered at the communal garden, but I wanted him back. The crematorium I used will let you come and watch them put your pet in and section them off from the other animals, but I would have been a total basket case watching that. One of the shelters in my area will do individual cremation as well, but they don't offer the option to watch. It really creeped me out that I might not actually get Mordred back, so I paid three times as much for more piece of mind. Michelle Quote
sarahmyjoy Posted May 26, 2004 Posted May 26, 2004 at the shop where i went to get some dog food today the fellow in the store told us about a new paper that was being put out and this was the premier issue of 'Paw Prints' of kansas city and in it had this in it "LifeGem" the idea is to commemorate loved ones and be able to keep a part of them close. it is a dimond created from the ashes of your loved one. it can be .25c to 1.3 c. and faceted to your specifications, certifed as real. it takes about 18 weeks. www.lifegem.com also "WithMe Forever" scroll pendant or key chain. the artist that designed these products says that it is to hold a symbol(hair or pic) and a written affirmation of your unending connection www.withmeforever.com Quote
