Today i got to the gas station and an employee there told me there was a dog who recently was hitted by a car, (we are known for driving in a car full of dogs  ) the dog was laying next to the station, so as the " street creatures superhero" i am, i went to see him. I guess the dog is not a pure breed, he looks like a border terrier but bigger and black  he has a great face and he's not agressive, at least with me.

But it seems he's hurt of one of his paws and he's totally infested with fleas and ticks. I'm thinking what to do for help this dog, maybe i can take him and give him a bath, feed him and try to heal his paw, but after that?... maybe i can make some room for him with the other guys, but maybe he can't socialize with them... also i'll have to fix him.

The sad part is here in this city we don't have a dog shelter, well actually there's a little shelter where you can take dogs and cats, but they only put puppys and kittens for adoption, i guess adult dogs and cats are put to sleep immediately :( . And of course leave the dog where he is means he's gonna try to cross the street and get hitted again and probably die.

So i'm here trying to find an answer to this problem. Opinions are more than welcome. :)

I'd say go and get him. If not take care of him, at least have the poor thing euthanized. It's a lot better than getting no care at all. Or you could contact a rescue for funding and have him placed in their program! There is so many options :)

I say go and rescue him too :). Maybe if you take him to your vet, the vet will have a few ideas and can tell you what sort of shape the poor thing's in and whether it's better to put him out of his misery or treat him accordingly. If keeping him as your own isn't an option, maybe a rescue group if they exist? Good luck :)

OK, I am having a hard time understanding...first, did you try to contact the owners of the dog....or at least put an announcement over the radio. It could be a dog which slipped away from its owner and was running at large. The owners could be looking for the dog not knowing what became of it.
I would put annoucements over the radio, take the dog to a vet to have it checked over, keep the dog away from your dogs...get a capstar pill from the vet to kill the fleas on the dog...they are very cheap, a bath for a tramatized dog just hit by a car would be too much...and you really don't know how he will react to a bath, perhaps get a crate to put the dog in so it won't be running around causing further damage to its leg.
When you have the Vet look the dog over, advertise that you found a dog at the vet clinic's as well...I know alot of people who will check vet clinics.
Even if the dog does not have a collar does not mean it doesnt have a home....it may have slipped its collar. If the dog does have a collar thats a big bonus....especially if it has its rabies tag...if so the vet clinic can contact the owner.
good luck

first of all, call the police. Most people call them when their dogs go missing. If you cant take him, animal control will come get him. If he's been reported missing, his owners will be ecstatic to have him back.

The presumption is that where Izzy lives there are a plethora of stray dogs. Izzy has assumed, rightly or wrongly, that this dog is indeed a street dog. I am also assuming that Izzy probably has or will check to see if the dog is actually owned by anyone; by the tone of his post though, it seems as though the dog may be unfortunately homeless.

I would inform the police or animal control only. If he has a home, his owners will most certainly check those places. I personally wouldn't knock myself out though.

If you think you want to keep this dog, than go for it! But of course it's totally understandable if you can't do it. You're already got quite a houseful. Do you have any friends that might be interested?

Well when i posted this thread yesterday was about to leave the office, so i didn't read all the replies until today, when i already took some action

I went to look for the dog and there he was, i took him to the vet, it seems his injuries are not serious, gave him some medication and i left him there because this morning he was going to be cleaned.

I understand your way to take this problems is calling authorities, but believe me here is so different from your countries, i can call the police and if they are "in the mood", maybe come and take the dog straight to kill. So maybe i get rid of this dog but i think leave this problem to the police is like i was doing anything for his suffering.

I mean, mexican politics and goverments are a total joke, full of corruption at all levels, policemen here have a very low salary, they are not educated people, they can barely write and read, so if the goverment just don't works for humans like it should, can you imagine how it does for animals?

I'll look if this dog belongs to somebody, the idea of some radio annoucements it's good,he seems homeless at first sight, is so skinny, i guees my first description was wrong, he doesn't look like a border terrier, he's more like a little black wolfhound, he's so kind and friendly.

Ok let's see him:

i'll also try some flyers in the area i hope i can find his owner, if not, i'll have to make some room for him in my signature

Well then all there is to say is WELCOME new dog!!!! :D

Not yet, if he's homeless we have to see if he can socialize with the gang in here, if he can't, i'll try to find him a new home, and if i can't do it, we are going to PTS, which is the last option.

thanks for the advices everyone :)

Yes, I agree!! You are very kind.

Isn't it odd that we all have big hearts for stray dogs, but if we were to walk past a homeless person, we would be offended and not even let them see us look their way........ (don't know where that came from  )

Best of luck to your new little friend. Hope it all works out for him. He has a very sweet face.

Daisysmom, I think there is a whole assumption that people generally make their own luck and if they end up disadvantaged or homeless, then that's their own problem and why should we have to deal with that, whereas stray dogs aren't usually stray because of their own fault. Plus the homeless person wanting money for buying food and then cracking it if you go to buy them food (what do they want the money for then? drugs? booze? why not just say so like in Pygmalion?) angers a lot of people who do actually try to help sometimes. I'm not saying this is a good thing but I think that's the way it is... I wish I knew how to fix a lot of the world's problems. :(

And dogs are much nicer than people any day.

OK peple this topic has been split.. all the homelessness debate is in the debates section now (I couldn't split individual posts though so all congratulatory comments about Izzy are over in the other topic). You may all post on what a great person Izzy is here now! :D
