imported_nea Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 I've run out of ideas for tricks to teach to Web. So far he knows, pretty paw (shakes hands, sort of) high five (rears up and slaps his paw on my hand) tail (chases his tail) beg (puts his front feet on my legs and looks up) get foodbowl (gets his foodbowl  ) get toy (gets a toy) go find ---- (runs and finds whoevers name is called) figure 8 (walks in a figure eight around my legs) jump (jumps over things, for example an extended leg or through a hoola hoop) bow (bows) What other tricks are there, and what are some ways to teach them? :) Quote
snowpaws Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 How about spin? Dogs pick that up really easily! :D Or leaving a treat on his nose or paws Quote
imported_Kat Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 Oh yeah you can teach loads of things. When my exams are over on 25th May I'll post some things up for ya that Meg does for heelwork to music routines. Right now its back to learning about tree shrews and stress mathematics :o Quote
imported_nea Posted May 14, 2004 Author Posted May 14, 2004 How do you teach speak? I've been wanting to teach him that for a while now. But I don't want to praise him for barking at the mailman and stuff like that, which he does. And other than that he doesn't bark much. But he has an awesome, deep bark that sounds so out of place on this little silly dog  . I'd like to teach him to have a treat on his nose too, but the problem is that he goes crazy around food. I've tried holding one treat in one hand that he sees, and another in my other hand that I place on his nose when he is intent on the other one. but then he doesnt realize whats happened and when he moves his head the treat on his nose slides to the floor pitifully and he looks supriesd to see a treat. If I don't distract him he gets frustrated and goes through his whole inventory of things he knows, trying to charm me into giving it to him. Sometimes he succeds too.. Any ideas on how to teach him that trick? Good luck with your tree shrews Kat! Quote
bk_blue Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 Webby sounds really smart :) you must have put in some work to train him to do all that, BK wouldn't do any of that in a pink fit, he'd think it was beneath his dignity   though I did teach him a few things. One was roll over, which was easy from a down/drop position and he loved doing it because he got a tummy rub for his troubles (he's not at all motivated by food). Does Webby know wait? or drop? they are very handy ones to know believe me! I don't know how to get them to speak... Shara will probably know, she taught Hazel heaps of tricks. :) Quote
kendalyn Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 You could teach him to play dead :-) When I point my finger like a gun and say "Bang", Buck falls over on his back and sticks his legs up. It's really cute :P Quote
Queen Bitch Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 You could teach him to beg without using your legs as support. I taught my Dal gal to do that when I was a kid, it was super cute, especially when our gangly, uncoordinated 9 month old male tried to immitate her. Other tricks: the Police search. Have him put his front paws up against the wall so you can "search him". Roll over. Dance , while standing on his back legs. I think Sizzle will know some more too. Quote
courtnek Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 speak isnt too difficult. Just find something he'll bark at (other than the mailman) and when yu see him tense up to start barking, or after he's started, say "speak" and give him a treat. With mine, I barked at them. Woof! woof! woof! then speak! then woof! etc. you get the drift. When they do speak, I give them a treat. I found the low-in-the-throat bark (deeper voiced) got them to bark back quicker. Even howling works. Also, a recording of other dogs ( I used a bay sound that I got online) will get them going. Even Freebee barks at the bay. Look at them and say SPEAK then play the recording. They will bark instinctively. then reward them. After a while, they will tie the command to the action. Quote
imported_nea Posted May 15, 2004 Author Posted May 15, 2004 I'm going to try speak tomorrow, today he is way to tired. I've been trying to teach him roll over since about december, and he gets the idea but instead of rolling over neatly he flops around on his back. He looks a bit like a dying fish. Maybe I'lll change that to play dead instead, then he doesnt have to try to go all the way around... :) Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 One of Hazel's famous tricks was getting a pop for me from the fridge! :D Started teaching Coal that too but he stands there with his head cocked to the side as if to say "I don't get it" Needs a little more practice I think  Quote
imported_nea Posted May 15, 2004 Author Posted May 15, 2004 wow thats impressive! :o How did you teach that? Didn't she steal other things out of the refrigerator? Quote
courtnek Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 nea napisaĆ(a):wow thats impressive! :o How did you teach that? Didn't she steal other things out of the refrigerator? that's the exact reason I never taught that rick to my dogs....once they knew how to open the fridge, it would be all over....    Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004   No no, she couldn't open it from the handle. I tied a towel around it so she could pull it open with that, without the towel tied there she couldn't open it  Quote
