Well it's spring and along with it has come Rosie's skin problem again. :(

If you remember last year her tummy was all red and itchy. It cleared up in September and we've had no probs with it till now. It has to be a grass seed allergy. I'm dreading going through all that again and have to try something else this year (although I tried most everything). So it's back to searching the net for remedies. :(

If anyone has any ideas I'll be glad to hear them.

Thanks SC and DO. :D

Anyway, the Benedryl has a tendency to make her tired.

God I don't need Rosie to be any more lazy than she already is. Her thryroid problem doesn't help. She recently had another blood test and is still on the same dose. She hates taking her tablets and we give it to her just before a little treat. She hides it in the flap in her mouth then eats the treat and spits the tablet out. :x

They have always had Omega Oil with their food, I am determined she's not going on Steroids again this year. Will keep trying things and see what happens. English Setters are renowned for skin problems and ear infections and yet recently over here they were voted the cheapest dog to keep. :o Don't know where they got that from, she's cost me a small fortune in vets bills and skin washes and creams etc, whereas Ruby has cost us nothing, she never has any problems (except for when she cut her foot).

PS: We work in pounds and ounces. The metric system is here but us oldies prefer the old system.

What I would try is to ease the superficial itch is to boil oatmeal until soupy..put it in a nylon sock and apply to the itchy area...this will help ease the itch...its not a cure, but, it will help. Or instead of this you can apply a poultice of wash the area frequently with a preparation of of black or green tea, it supplies tannic acid, which helps to dry up the moist places...you can also smear on vitamin E oil or fresh aloe vera gel.
As for the allergies...I would stop vaccinating Rosi, this can stress the immunity much more so for a dog which suffers from allergies. Then I would fast Rosi for a day with just liquids (boiled chicken frame, and veggies give the liquid and yogurt-make sure the yogurt is organic- Rosie doesnt need any additives to further stress the immune system) if at all possible I would lean towards a natural diet with no additives...a raw or slightly steamed diet would be perfect. Make sure all veggies and meats are organic. Its also wise to include nutritional yeast and granular lecithin, cod liver oil (only if a natural diet-do not give wtih kibble as kibble), cold pressed unsaturated vegetable oil and vitamin E or wheat germ capsules....its also a good idea to add 5-20 milligrams daily of chelated zinc. In additon, vitamin C is very helpful give 500-2,000 milligrams a day depending on your dogs size. Fresh organic raw garlic smashed and put into Rosi's food will help as well...don't over due the garlic.

Thanks Cassie :kciuki:

I tried the oatmeal bath and applying it to her skin last year. I will try it again. As I home cook my dogs food they do get Dr Pitcairns supplement of Lecithin, Brewers Yeast, Kelp and Calcium added to their food along with Omega oil. It probably doesn't help where we live but there's not much I can do about that.

I will try some of the other suggestions you made and let you know how Rosie gets on. Anything to ease her discomfort. :(

Update:

Started washing Rosie's tummy with Green Tea. Added zinc and Vitamin C to her diet and from another recommendation started putting a drop of cider vinegar in the drinking water. The results are amazing, her tummy is back to normal, no scratching at all and it has improved their coats. :P Apparently the cider vinegar rids the body of toxins. Anyway whatever it was I'm just glad things have improved 100%. I actually got asked today what I used to make their coats gleaming. :D

Thanks for the advice.
